Kenny Chesney Writes About “Horrible” Split With Renee Zellweger

On his latest album Lucky Old Sun, Kenny Chesney writes about the end of his four-month marriage to Renee Zellweger.

He tells Newsweek recovering from the split was “was horrible. It took a while. Years. It’s been since 2005.

“I was probably as emotionally and mentally exhausted as I’d ever been,” he goes on. “And that was due to a lot of things — having the foot on the gas pedal constantly, and my breakup with Renee Zellweger.”

So, he says, “I got in a plane and went down to the Virgin Islands. I was completely by myself.

“I didn’t want to be around anybody,” Chesney continues. “So the next thing you know, it’s me and a pen, and I sat down and wrote a lot of lines of this song, ‘Nowhere to Go, Nowhere to Be.'”

Asked if he was nervous writing about the Zellweger split, he tells Newsweek, “It’s the truth. It’s my life.

“I’ve been in a lot of states of mind in the last three years,” he says. “In that way, it’s a pretty honest record. I’ve let myself be more emotionally vulnerable in some of the lyrics. I think that was good therapy.”

He says he has “no idea” what the actress will think. “I don’t know. It’s unpredictable.”

Chesney tells Newsweek they still talk “every now and then. I don’t want to say this whole record is about her.”

Is he still heartbroken?

“Not at all,” says the singer, who adds that he is dating again. “I already wrote those songs. I’m on to something else.”

Kenny Chesney is a workaholic

Kenny Chesney

Country superstar Kenny Chesney is always trying to hone his talent. To do so, he’s got to work hard, leaving little time for any other hobbies.

“I’m a self-proclaimed workaholic. All I do is work,” he tells OK!. “I’m always working on my craft as a songwriter, working on making the show better, working on trying to find that best song.”

But when he does take time off, he keeps it pretty simple. “I flush all the road dust off me on my boat in the Caribbean,” he says. “And I go home, spend time with my family, sit on the couch, watch television and eat Doritos.”

The Knoxville, Tenn. native is now giving one lucky fan the chance to visit him in his home state, see him in concert and visit the places that inspired him growing up, in conjunction with MasterCard’s Roots of Rock Sweepstakes. Log on to priceless.com for your chance to hang out with Kenny!

Kenny Chesney is a Saint

Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney turned sports hero at American football team the New Orleans Saints’ pre-season practice last week – when he won the team a Sunday off.

Saints coach Sean Payton, who is a friend of the singer, invited Chesney to join the footballers at Thursday’s on-field work-out, and promised to give the players a day to themselves if the visitor could catch a punt.

Chesney, wearing helmet, pads and a Saints shirt with his name on the back, failed to keep a hold of his first two attempts, but caught the third – much to the delight of his team-mates for the day.

The country star, who was a top high school footballer in Tennessee, was then saluted by Payton, who insisted the singer was part of the team.

A thrilled Chesney said, “I quit growing too young to ever think about getting to have a shot at playing in college, so this is about as much fun I can have.”

Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney is knocking down a tabloid report that he’s engaged.

“Kenny Chesney is not getting married. He’s not engaged. He’s not planning on being engaged any time in the near future,” his rep tells People. “In fact, he was surprised by the news and isn’t sure how or why anyone would’ve gotten that idea. As he recently told PEOPLE, ‘I enjoy being a bachelor. I enjoy everything that comes along with it.'”

Chesney, 40, recently won the coveted entertainer of the year award at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas.
