Rock on Tom!

Tom Cruise practiced rockin out on the balcony of his hotel room in Miami, Florida over the weekend. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Tom said he’s “having a blast” getting his musical feet wet.

The 48-year-old star, who plays aging rocker Stacee Jaxx in “Rock of Ages,” will sing Def Leppard’s, “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” as well as Bon Jovi’s famed power ballad, “Dead or Alive,” in the film, and Tom said he’s “learning a lot” about vocal performance.

“I’ve always loved music, but… there’s nothing like doing something yourself to give you a greater appreciation for what this art form is and it’s fantastic,” Tom told Ryan.

Julianne Hough, who plays Sherrie Christian in the musical, also had nothing but good things to say about working with Tom when Access recently caught up with the dancer/singer/actress.

“’Commitment’ does not sum up the whole Tom Cruise-ness. He is so unbelievable,” Julianne told Access as she teamed up with Cesar Canine Cuisine and the American Humane Association to kick off the voting campaign for the first Hero Dog Awards in New York City late last month. “It’s amazing.”

Julianne said Tom carries off his role as the successful, but aging rocker, Stacee, with aplomb.

“There’s no ounce of like, T.C. in that,” Julianne said, referring to Tom’s initials. “It’s all Stacee Jaxx, the character. He’s unbelievable.”

“Rock of Ages,” which also co-stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin, is slated to hit theaters on June 1, 2012.

I love that Tom’s just practicing on the balcony. Wonder if he was actually singing – or just acting like he was singing. I think Katie’s face says it all.

InStyle Cover: Katie Holmes opens up about her ‘manly romantic’ husband Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes
is InStyle’s August cover girl. In the interview, Katie opens up about how husband Tom Cruise keeps the romance alive, and how he’s “manly romantic”. She also opens up about the pressure to have another baby (she says no thanks!). I think she looks great inside the magazine, but I’m not a fan of the cover. She looks plastic.

Here are some highlights from the interview!

What’s a date night like with husband Tom Cruise?

“Two years ago he took me up on his P-51 Mustang, a fighter plane from World War II. He painted the words, ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ on the side,” Holmes says in the August issue of InStyle. “It feels like you’re on a bike in the sky. I thought, I’m either going to spend this whole flight totally freaked out or realize this is pretty thrilling.”

When you’re married to one of the world’s biggest movie stars, whom Holmes calls a “manly romantic,” life is bound to be exciting but also challenging when it comes to balancing careers and family.

On keeping the romance alive:

“In our family we have a policy: we make it work,” she says. “We Skype, and we try not to go for a week without seeing each other. We’re also very good at setting up camp wherever we go.”

On daughter Suri:

Wherever the couple goes, their 5-year-old daughter Suri is often in tow. The actress, who will next be seen in the horror film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, credits her daughter with enriching her performances.

“My work has changed for the better,” Holmes notes. “I have more to bring to a role.”

On having another baby:

While the recent rumors that Holmes was pregnant turned out to be untrue, the actress says she doesn’t feel pressure to give Suri a sibling.

“We already have a very big family; a full household with cousins who are over a lot, and she has her friends,” Holmes says. “My biggest thing is making sure she’s fully taken care of and doing well.”

Experimenting with fashion:

“I’m not afraid to try a new designer or do something trendy, but it has to look right on my body. You don’t want to look like a fashion victim!”

On the excitement of landing new roles:

“Every time I get a job I cry. It sounds hokey, but it’s a sparkly moment that reminds you you’re living your dream every day. No matter how many roles you get, it’s like, ‘Somebody thinks I can do it!’”

On acting like a ‘lady’:

“I always try to conduct myself in a ladylike manner. That was my mom’s advice to me before every school dance, and it’s really locked in.”

TRAILER TIME: Katie Holmes and Adam Sandler in ‘Jack and Jill’

As if one Adam Sandler per movie wasn’t bad enough…how about two!

I know Adam Sandler movies make a gazillion dollars, but I just don’t get it. I don’t find his movies funny.

I will say, though, that it’s nice to see Katie Holmes in something a less serious!

Katie Holmes stuns at the premiere of her new movie, ‘Don’t be Afraid of the Dark.’

Wow, Katie looks great in her Contrarian midnight blue dress and nude Lanvin heels.

Unfortunately, critics are panning her new movie already.

The Hollywood Reporter claims it is scary – if you’re 9 years old.

The moral of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is that what scares you as a child doesn’t necessarily have the same effect on a grown-up. The very talented fabulist filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has in many of his best films, Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth, explored the heightened emotions and fantasies of very young people. Who knows but maybe this can be traced back, at least in part, to what he describes as the scariest movie he ever saw on television, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, written by Nigel McKeand and broadcast by ABC in 1973?

Now he has remade that telefilm into a feature, which he co-wrote and co-produced while handing directing chores to comics artist Troy Nixey (creator of Trout), making a feature debut. The result is a scary movie that is genuinely scary in parts, although an adult can’t help noticing this is set in the very worn and tattered territory of the haunted-house genre. Then when you get a glimpse of the CGI critters causing all the mayhem, the scares completely vanish. You spend the rest of the movie wondering why someone doesn’t just call a fumigator and get rid of those damn creatures.

The movie may still scare 9-year-olds when it gets released August 26, but anyone much older may laugh rather than shriek. Del Toro is by now a brand name so interest from his extended fan base as well as those from the world of comics should allow Miramax and FilmDistrict to enjoy a modest box-office success before this movie joins its predecessor as a late-night video.
