Kathy Griffin Talks ‘Fashion Police’ Departure

Kathy Griffin Talks 'Fashion Police' Departure

Kathy Griffin is opening up about her abrupt departure from the show Fashion Police. On Monday, the firecracker comedienne appeared on The View where she called the show “disingenuous”.

With regard to Giuliana Rancic’s comments about Zendaya Coleman’s hair, she said, “Some dude wrote that for her, which I don’t even feel they really needed. Honestly, I think everybody should’ve just improvised. So she said it and I was trying to be a team player and the show is very formulaic and that’s how they like it. It’s not my thing. When it came to sort of leave, [the network] was very nice to me. They weren’t mean and evil.”

On the topic of what it’s like to sit on the show’s panel, she said, “You’re kind of vulnerable. You’re there with the microphone and the audience, and you’re hoping to take this audience on a ride. It’s a little different than what felt to me, sort of like a dog pile. Right now, on the red carpet, all these women look so great. I was hoping that we could talk about the events themselves and the shows and stuff like that. And so I didn’t want to say that Meryl Streep didn’t look great, because she looked great. So sometimes it just felt disingenuous to me. But certainly, in my repertoire, I’ve said heinous things, I’m well aware of that, trust me!”

After Griffin made her decision, she enlisted the help of a fellow celeb to announce her exit.

“I actually called Lena Dunham,” she revealed. “I went,’ Okay, Joan was 27 years older than I am, I’m 54. I need a younger woman feminist to help me craft a statement.'” Griffin praised the Girls creator, 28, for being “super generous” in aiding her with the announcement, which was shared via Twitter with millions of fans.

“I just felt like I wanted to say it as a comic and a feminist,” Griffin continued. “I’m still going to give people crap, trust me. Lots of it.”

While she was able to speak for herself, Griffin’s former colleague Kelly Osbourne’s abrupt departure was an entirely different scenario. “I didn’t know she was going to [leave],” Griffin revealed. “I know that she went on social media and said that she might. Then the next day, she did.”

Unlike Osbourne, who was with the show for five years, Griffin felt that Fashion Police fans deserved an explanation from her at the very least. “I did a statement because I felt like Fashion Police just wasn’t the thing for me, you know what I mean?” she dished. “My style is improvisational and off the cuff, and they have a formula that worked so well with Joan and so well for so long and it just didn’t fit my thing. After awhile, I kind of felt like I was being forced to comment about pictures of beautiful women in perfect dresses and say bad things.”

Griffin referred back to the 2001 Oscars, when Icelandic singer Bjork walked the famed red carpet in her white swan dress. “The days of Bjork are over—and the swan,” she quipped. “As a feminist and a comic, it just didn’t feel like the right fit for me.”

As for whether Fashion Police will survive after losing two hosts and its recent controversy? “I mean look: since I don’t work there anymore, that’s like asking me what’s going to happen on Ray Donovan or House of Cards,” Griffin said on The View.

“I think that they had a very strict lane that they wanted to be in. And you guys know my work: I have 23 specials and I say my personal encounters with people and I go for people. But like, I wouldn’t hold up a picture of Kim Kardashian and say ‘She’s ugly, goodnight.’ I wouldn’t hold up a picture of Oprah and say, ‘She’s fat, goodnight.’ I would say, ‘Oprah said, John Travolta’s here!’ The behavior and the stuff to play with, and that’s really kind of what I do.”

Do you think she made the right decision in walking away from the show?

Kathy Griffin QUITS ‘Fashion Police’!!

Kathy Griffin QUITS 'Fashion Police'!!

After throwing Giuliana Rancic under the bus for her comments on Zendaya Coleman, Kathy Griffin has decided to leave Fashion Police!

She issued a statement on Twitter, talking about her decision to leave the show. She said, “I discovered that my style does not fit with the creative direction of the show and now it’s time to move on. When I chose to step into the shoes of my beloved Joan Rivers…I was thrilled to continue her legacy as a woman being brash and eccentric on television.”

She went on to say, “I am a freedom-loving female and gay rights activist who loves to find the funny in all people, attitudes, beliefs, and appearances, but only when the context permits intelligent humor. My brand of humor, while unrepentant and unafraid, is all about CONTEXT…Listen, I am no saint…But I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference.”

She continued, “I want to help women, gay kids, people of color and anyone who feels underrepresented to have a voice and a LAUGH!”

She concluded by thanking her fans and telling them where to find her next.

What do you think of her decision to quit the show after only having been on it for seven episodes?

Kathy Griffin Comments On ‘Fashion Police’ Drama

Kathy Griffin Comments On 'Fashion Police' Drama

Kathy Griffin knows that there are some things to comment on while taking apart another’s fashion choices, but she wouldn’t have gone anywhere near the comments that Giuliana Rancic made about Zendaya Coleman’s hair.

After Rancic commented that Coleman’s hair smelled like patchouli oil or weed, it caused Kelly Osbourne to jump ship from the show. Now, Griffin is speaking out about the Fashion Police drama.

“I wouldn’t have said the joke in the first place. Some dude wrote it for her,” Griffin told the magazine.

“Don’t have anyone write you jokes or even suggest jokes for you on ‘Fashion Police,'” she said when asked if she had any guidance for Rancic. “You have enough great insider gossip from actually being on the red carpet. That’s what fans want to hear the next day. Just talk and be yourself.”

Griffin also addressed Osbourne’s recent departure from the show, telling the magazine she’s unsure if her former co-host left because of the Zendaya drama or not.

“Jesus, I don’t know! Sometimes she seemed very upset at the merely seven tapings of ‘Fashion Police’ we did together. I can tell you this: I adore that family. I’ve spent the most time with Sharon. She is the real deal,” she said. “Love her! Kelly came to my house a couple of times when Joan was in the hospital and we were consoling each other. I can tell you there was genuine love there.”

Are you surprised that she commented at all?

Kathy Griffin: ‘Joan Rivers Left Some Large Shoes To Fill’

Kathy Griffin: 'Joan Rivers Left Some Large Shoes To Fill'

Kathy Griffin has been tasked with hosting “Fashion Police” following the untimely death of its host Joan Rivers. She knows the big deal placed on the job because she has said that Joan has left some pretty large shoes to fill.

“This was a job that was held by our dear friend Joan Rivers,” Griffin said in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday, Dec. 9. “I understand I have some very, very large shoes to fill.”

Rivers led the E! show from its inception in 2010, until the last episode this past August before her death. The Emmy-winning star passed away on Sept. 4 at the age of 81 after complications from a surgical procedure.

“In her honor, I will not be holding back,” Griffin said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “I am giving no passes, I am going to let people have it, I’m gonna bring the hammer down.”

There were rumors floating around that suggested that Kelly Osbourne was flabbergasted to learn about how much Kathy was making to replace Joan. Was Kathy Griffin a good choice in replacing the legendary comedienne? Have your say in the comments section below.
