Kate Winslet is furiously denying a British magazine’s claims that she has been seeing a diet specialist in Los Angeles.

The allegations, which were printed in the glossy magazine Grazia, are “completely untrue,” Winslet told reporters on the red carpet at the BAFTA awards in London on Sunday.

“I’m going to fight for myself. I don’t want people thinking that I would ever go to a diet doctor, I would ever buy into that stuff,” Winslet, who is nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Little Children, told a BBC radio interviewer. “I never have done, I never will.”

Last week, Grazia printed a story alleging that the actress visited the Chinese Healing Institute in Santa Monica to help with neck pain, and also to lose weight.

On Monday, attorneys for the actress at Schillings law firm in London said proceedings for libel were being issued. Winslet’s rep, Sara Keene, underlined her client’s feelings, saying: “Kate is angry and upset about it because it is an issue she feels very strongly about. She will be issuing legal proceedings. She wants to get the message out there.”

Winslet, a mother of two, has become well known for not bowing to the trend for super-skinny actresses, and is often heralded as a role model for her stance.

“I will continue to say what I feel about this issue of women being thin and emaciated. It’s just out of control,” she said Sunday. “I know I’m a role model to young women. It’s a role that I take very, very seriously and I would never want anyone to ever think I was a hypocrite in doing something like going to a diet doctor, for goodness sake. I mean, it’s really, really ridiculous.”

Kate Winslet is reluctant to encourage her kids to take up acting - because she has seen first hand how painful and cruel a career it can be.

While Winslet herself has enjoyed a successful career, her thespian father and actress sisters have had to suffer the trials of being an out-of-work actor.

And, although she insists daughter Mia would make a great actress, Winslet doesn’t want to push the six-year-old or three-year-old Joe into such a difficult life.

The 31-year-old says, “Mia was a very flamboyant and expressive kid, but now she has calmed down a little.

“There was a moment where I thought, ‘Oh, my God, she could really end up doing this for a living!’ and I wasn’t sure how I felt about this. I know from my parents, when I said that was what I wanted to do, it was a big deal.

“My father was a struggling actor for most of his life; both my sisters act and they are not struggling at the moment, but it can be a very hard life.

“When a parent has experienced heartache and struggle from the thing they love most and which they do for a living, of course, it makes sense that they’d be concerned about their child going in for it.”

Owen Wilson has been rekindling his romance with Kate Hudson this week in Australia, according to a close source.

Hudson is Down Under filming “Fool’s Gold” with Matthew McConaughey in the tropical state of Queensland.

A pal says Hudson and Wilson are back together after a bumpy patch over the holidays. “Owen backed out [of Christmas and New Year] because he didn’t want to deal with the whole situation with her family,” the friend tells me. “There’s [estranged husband Chris Robinson] and the baby, and also Goldie [Hawn] and Kurt [Russell] don’t approve of the relationship.”

The extended family was to spend the holiday week together in Aspen, says the source, but in the end neither Owen nor Kate went.

Wilson’s rep said last night he was in India. But according to a second Aussie source, “Kate had a very close, friendly relationship with the paparazzi on set, but she changed her tune earlier this week. There was a five-day period when she requested no photographers. [Her people] even threatened to get the police on them if they didn’t leave her alone.”
