Here’s What Julie Andrews Thinks Of Emily Blunt Playing Mary Poppins

68th Annual Cannes Film Festival - "Sicario" Photocall

Passing the torch!

Julie Andrews has given her blessing for Emily Blunt to play the iconic Mary Poppins in the remake of the 1964 Disney classic film, and (as I’d imagine) Blunt felt…relief, but also more pressure to be GOOD.

Blunt revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall met up with Andrews in the Hamptons where he spilled the beans on casting for the Poppins reboot. And that Emily’s glad things went OKAY:

“Rob said he was in the Hamptons, and he saw [Andrews], and he said, ‘It’s top secret, but Emily Blunt’s paying Mary Poppins,’” Blunt said. “And she went, ‘Oh, wonderful!’”

“I felt like I wanted to cry,” she continued. “It was lovely to get her stamp of approval. That took the edge off it, for sure.”

The Devil Wears Prada actress explained why she’s so nervous to take on the musical role. “I feel a little more trepidation with this [character] because she’s so emblematic of people’s nostalgia,” she said. “It’s such an important character in people’s childhood.”

However, the Girl on the Train star has a different take on Poppins than Andrews’ interpretation of the character, first created by author P.L. Travers in a series of eight books. “We’re delving into the books a lot more, which is a different version of the character, I’ll say that much,” she said. “She’s a little meaner, yeah.”

Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda will star alongside Blunt as a lamplighter, Jack, and Meryl Streep is also in talks to join the remake, which is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2018.

Are you excited about seeing Emily as Mary Poppins? Emily’s a good pick, in my opinion, and I think she’ll do justice to the role.

Julie Andrews ‘Forced To Kiss’ Her Stepdad

Julie Andrews was forced to sleep with a bolt on her bedroom door as a child because her stepfather tried to kiss her. The Sound Of Music star, 72, reveals in her forthcoming autobiography Home: A Memoir Of My Early Years how she hid from her stepfather, Ted Andrew, after he kissed her drunkenly in her bedroom in 1951.

She writes, “Suddenly he said, ‘I really must teach you how to kiss properly’ and kissed me full on the lips. It was a deep, moist kiss – a very unpleasant experience. Ten minutes later he came back in. I was burrowed beneath the covers, facing the wall. He leaned over me and tried to kiss me again. I rolled nearer the wall and mumbled, ‘I’m really sleepy. Goodnight, now!'”

The Oscar winner recalls another incident when Ted said he wanted to “cuddle” her. She said she felt “trapped and claustrophobic”, adding: “Something about it didn’t feel right to me at all.”

Andrews adopted Canadian entertainer Ted’s surname after he married her mother Barbara.
