Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers was detained by French police on Saturday afternoon following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted an airport lounge employee while drunk, Agence France Presse reports.
The Irish actor, 31, was placed in custody for several hours for having a skirmish with bar employees and allegedly punching one at the Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris, according to reports.
The incident began when a bartender at the café area “Le Quotidien” in the departure area of the airport at terminal 2F refused to serve the actor, who appeared drunk, according to the news service. A shouting match developed between Rhys Meyers and the bar manager. Then when another bar employee tried to separate the pair, Rhys Meyers swung and punched the intervening waiter.
Police handcuffed the actor when placing him in custody, and sources tell PEOPLE that the actor remained in a sober lock-up area for three hours before being released.
The AFP reports that Rhys Meyers has been told to appear before the Correctional Tribunal in Bobigny in September to answer charges concerning, “voluntary violence, contempt, issuing death threats and assault,” according to a judicial source.
The Tudors actor was previously arrested for public intoxication in November 2007 at the Dublin airport. In April of the same year he spent time in a rehab facility for treatment.
A rep for Rhys Meyers had no comment.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers was forced to halt filming on Match Point while kissing co-star Scarlett Johansson – so that he could have a shave.
Actor Meyers, who played Johansson’s lover in the 2005 Woody Allen-directed drama, held up production while filming an intimate scene so that he could de-fuzz.
Johansson says, “Kissing him wasn’t that bad, but he did have to stop and shave in the middle of a scene, even though he’d shaved that morning. The man has really got some serious beard on him.”

Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers kicked his alcohol addiction after the death of his mother – because her untimely demise gave him the determination to do more with his life.
The Irish star’s mom Geraldine Meyers-O’Keeffe suffered a stroke in November, and Meyers turned to alcohol in a bid to cope with the news – resulting in his arrest for drunken behavior at a Dublin, Ireland airport hours later.
She passed away unexpectedly two days later. Charges of public drunkenness and breach of the peace against Meyers were later dropped. And the Mission Impossible III actor – who entered rehab in early 2007 to battle alcoholism – insists he has been sober ever since.
He says, “I haven’t even thought about drinking since my mother passed away. Drinking is not the way forward for me at all. Since I was 27 I must have been drunk maybe a dozen-and-a-half times – but when I do, I’m like Bambi. I’m all over the place, hopeless, like a 16-year-old kid. People notice.”
“Now drink doesn’t fit into where I want to go. I want to do something useful with my life. Drinking is not synonymous with that. To be honest, I just leave it alone and hope people will, too, but I don’t really care. The whole drinking thing with me has been blown out of all proportion anyway.”

Jonathan Rhys Meyers has come under fire from animal rights activists after his latest co-star, Radha Mitchell, let it slip that he ate dog while filming in China.
Mitchell coos about the movie hunk’s “adventurous pallet” but officials at People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are less than impressed.
The actress insists dining out in rural China, where she and Rhys-Meyers, shot new film The Children of Huang Shi, was a challenge – and her co-star decided to go native.
She says, “The challenge was ordering lunch and getting chicken claws, just these weird things that you don’t expect and you’re not used to so you’re constantly adjusting. Jonathan did the dog’s meat. We were in some restaurant and there was dog meat on the menu and there was someone next to us just sitting there with their Chihuahua in a handbag.
“I was thinking, ‘That could’ve been dessert.’”
But PETA bosses are appalled that Rhys-Meyers, who plays British journalist George Hogg in the Roger Spottiswoode film, sampled man’s best friend.
Spokesman Michael MCGraw rages, “Most people are appalled to hear about Jonathan Rhys Meyers eating dog flesh.”
And he urges anyone sickened by the story to consider turning veggie: “They should take a look at what’s on their own plates. Chickens and cows may not be as cute and cuddly as puppies, but when it comes to their ability to feel pain and suffer, they are no different from animals people call pets. The best way to avoid harming any animals is simply not to eat them and go veggie.”
