Season five of their TLC reality series, Jon & Kate Plus 8, is filming at the couple’s Wernersville, Pa., home and it’s clear that recent scandals are causing on-set tension between Jon, 32, and Kate, 34, like never before. During an afternoon of filming with the kids in the front yard on May 20, “Jon and Kate never came near each other,” says an observer. “The whole time the cameras were rolling, Jon looked really uninterested.”

Brian Sep, a close friend of Jon’s for the past 15 years, confirms that Jon is sick of the spotlight. “There have been some perks to the fame,” Brian tells Life & Style, including free trips, plastic surgery for Kate, clothes and, just recently, a custom-built motorcycle for Jon courtesy of Orange County Choppers. But with his family now falling apart, Jon has changed his mind about having their lives — and problems — aired for all to see.

“I think this will be the last season,” Brian says. “Jon wants it to end.” But that decision may not be Jon’s to make. If he and Kate are locked into a contract, Jon could be forced to continue filming. “If he has a contract with TLC to do more seasons of the show, having marital problems with his wife wouldn’t automatically let him out of it,” Quinn Heraty, a NYC-based entertainment lawyer who hasn’t seen the contract, tells Life & Style.

Jon and Kate Gosselin’s eight children are being “exploited” for the sake of ratings, Kate’s brother and sister-in-law alleged on CBS’ The Early Show Wednesday.

When the TLC series first aired in 2007, Kevin Kreider, Kate’s younger brother, and his wife, Jodi, thought it was a unique way to document the kids’ lives.

“We thought it was very innocent at the time,” Jodi said. “It quickly turned into more and more demands from Jon and Kate from the network. It turned into 40 episodes in a six-month span.”

“There were cameras in the children’s bedroom at one point, and they were filming all year round,” Jodi said. “These were very huge concerns for us.”

Monday’s season five premiere attracted 9.8 million viewers – more than double the audience for its fourth-season finale several weeks ago. Kevin — who is estranged from his sister Kate — said he and his wife are speaking out now to be “the voices” of their nieces and nephews.

“They’re being viewed as a commodity,” Kevin said.

Added Jodi, “They’re being exploited, and it’s time for America to see the situation for what it really is.”

“Unfortunately, there are no laws protecting children in reality TV shows, and it’s time for the public to be appear of this,” she continued. “These children are very aware of the cameras in their homes. The home is their workplace. This is not a healthy environment for kids to be raised in.” (more…)

Where do Jon and Kate Gosselin go from here?

Even they don’t entirely know, say the couple after the heartbreaking season premiere of their TLC show, Jon & Kate Plus Eight, drew a record-breaking audience of 9.8 million viewers.

“As many couples do, we are navigating a very difficult time,” the couple said in a statement. “Our current situation brings us together around the children and some times sets us apart. We keep our faith that we will make the right decisions for our family.”

In Monday’s highly-anticipated season premiere, the Gosselins came together to throw a fifth birthday party for their sextuplets, but remained unsure about where they stand as a couple following difficulties in their marriage and media scrutiny.

“We will always love our kids,” Jon said on the show, after apologizing to his family. “We will come together for our kids.”

Jon and Kate Gosselin don’t appear on camera at the same time until 45 minutes into tonight’s premiere of Jon & Kate Plus 8.

Kate — who shoots majority of her testimonial scenes solo (the couple usually appears as a pair) — admits she and Jon may not be together for much longer.

“I am thinking this possibly could be our last family picture together,” she says of a photo taken at the sextuplets’ fifth birthday party. “I don’t know…parents of multiples have, like, triple the divorce rate, and I was thinking we were gonna beat that. I don’t know if I can say that anymore. Very swiftly, we turned into two different people, and that’s just hard. I’ve tried for six months to figure out what the problem is, or remedy the problem. It’s so complicated.”

Adds Jon: “I think it was good for them [the kids] to see their mom and dad together in one place, even though it’s been tough right now. Like I said, we will come together for our kids regardless of our relationship. We have to make a plan and settle jointly what we’re going to do. There are good times and bad times and nothing is perfect.”

In the episode, Jon spends a weekend away while Kate plans the sextuplets’ fifth birthday party solo. She’s seen struggling to drive the 15-person van, carry party supplies and control the children alone. She also complains about the paparazzi cameras to the reality TV cameras that trail her.

“It’s a lot,” she admits. “I would be lying if I sat here and said, ‘Oh, I’m handing it great.’ It’s not fine.”

The couple of nearly 10 years open up about their relationship issues. Jon denies his affair, despite more than five sources confirming it to Us Weekly, while Kate (who had her own “inseparable” relationship with her bodyguard) admits she’s “angry” at Jon for the way he’s been acting.

“Slowly, I’ve seen him almost resent the duties [of being a parent],” she tells the camera. “I know it’s a lot to take care of eight kids. I’m traveling a lot, he’s frustrated a lot. I think he’s angry at me. He doesn’t really feel great about me.

“Have I been hard on him for almost the last 10 years that we’ve been married? I would never deny that. I’ve always regretted it. Have I pushed him to this? I don’t feel like I have. I feel like everyone is responsible for their own actions.

“I have a lot of anger. Because this is not where we’re supposed to be. This is not what I envisioned for us. Not what I envisioned for him. He’s made some very poor decisions, and we all have to live with them,” she continues.

Jon admits the show has “become a business,” and Kate laments that she’s away so often on book signings, her kids sometimes accidentally call her by their baby-sitters’ names.

“That kills you…I pour that mommy guilt on myself a lot,” she says.

At the fifth birthday party, Jon and Kate’s relationship is clearly strained, as the newest issue of Us Weekly reports.

“I drove separately,” Jon admits, while Kate breaks down into tears while preparing the cake and ignores her husband.

The show ends with the family having a barbecue and Jon and Kate acting cordial, yet removed, on camera.

“Everything’s falling apart,” Kate says. “I feel like the world is sitting on my shoulders.”

As seen in Thursday’s sneak peek clip, the couple of about 10 years speak to the camera separately. (In prior seasons, they give testimonials together.)

Kate added: “I will not give up. I will not lay down and die.”

“The world isn’t about ratings and TV. It’s about happiness and love and companionship and god,” Jon tells the camera. “And, you know, I think we all get caught up in everything. Too much of anything is bad. Because I love my kids, I love my family and that’s what it is.”

Us Weekly also reports that Jon saw his sextuplets as his “meal ticket” and Kate’s former baby nurse confirms Kate talked to the McCaughey sextuplet family for advice on getting freebies.

Continues Jon to the camera: “Kate and I obviously have been going through a lot of stuff and discussing what’s best for our kids. What we said in the beginning — it’s a crazy life, but it’s our life — that’s so true.”

Looks like the Gosselin fallout has begun.

The Ronald McDonald House canceled an appearance by Kate Gosselin after ticket sales were slow, the charity’s spokeswoman confirms to The Patriot News.

The spokeswoman attributes the low sales to the fact that the event was to be held over Memorial Day weekend, and they did not have enough time to “properly promote” it. Tickets were between $25 and $45.

After Us Weekly exclusively reported Jon was having an affair with a 23-year-old teacher, and was suspicious of his wife’s relationship with her bodyguard, 82 percent of Usmagazine.com readers admitted they wouldn’t tune in for the May 25 season premiere.

Gosselin seemed unfazed by the cancellation while shopping with one of her sextuplets, Alexis, near their $1.1-million home Monday.

“Kate seemed in a good mood today,” a witness tells Us of the mother-daughter duo, who stopped by a local bank, a Kinko’s and the dentist.

On Sunday, the family filmed the sextuplet’s fifth birthday party. It was more than a week after the kids’ actual birthday — mother’s day — in which Kate spent the afternoon tanning instead of with her children.

The birthday party also marked Jon and Kate’s first appearance together in more than two weeks. A witness told Us they hardly interacted and left in separate cars.
