‘Boardwalk Empire’ leaves ‘Mad Men’ empty handed at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards!

Just last year ‘Mad Men’ was the critics favorite. This year, that hasn’t been the case, and ‘Boardwalk Empire’ is walking away with all the awards! Just like the Golden Globes, the ‘Mad Men’ ensemble left the SAG Awards empty handed – being overshadowed by ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and ‘The Good Wife’.

The AMC series was up for three drama awards — best series ensemble, best actor for Jon Hamm, and best actress for Elisabeth Moss. SAG voters followed the Golden Globes lead and opted for “Boardwalk Empire,” that show’s star Steve Buscemi, and “Good Wife” star Julianna Margulies, respectively.

“Mad Men” won SAG’s ensemble award the previous two years, but series creator Matthew Weiner was taking it all in stride after the ceremony.

“If you don’t like being at something like this (and not winning), you shouldn’t be in the business,” Weiner told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re out of work right now, and I get to hang out with my family,” he added, referring to the cast. “This is my family.”

While the show has been renewed for a fifth season, Weiner recently said he doesn’t yet have a contract (AMC is still negotiating with Lionsgate, which produces the drama) — but he’s “not looking for a new job.”

“Mad Men” has failed to win any individual acting awards at either the SAG Awards or the Emmys, although Hamm did receive a Golden Globes statuette in 2008.

I have to agree, ‘Boardwalk’ was the better show last year. I’m not sure what was up with ‘Mad Men’ – but it was definitely off. I had a hard time with Don and Betty being divorced. I felt disconnected from the show (even though I LOVE it). I definitely think ‘Boardwalk’ was just plain better. What do you think? Agree with me?

Season 5 of ‘Mad Men’ is a loooooooong ways away

We know that a new season of ‘Mad Men’ is coming – but what we don’t know is how long it’s going to be until we see it! According to NY Mag, creater Matthew Weiner hasn’t even begun writing season 5!

AMC has promised the world a fifth season of Mad Men, but the network is still negotiating with Lionsgate, which produces the drama. And with Matthew Weiner, whose contract expired. “I have every intention of making the show when they decide to work out their business with Lionsgate,” Weiner said yesterday. “I have said over and over that I want the show to go on and on until it has worn out its welcome and we can’t think of anything more for the characters to do. I’m not looking for a new job. I’m dying to go back to work, but the truth is I don’t know what their plans are. We have not started writing. I am not back at work. They are fighting over a very lucrative property, and who is going to pay for it to get made; it’s one of the biggest perils of success — everyone wants a piece of it now and they are fighting over who is gonna get the biggest chunk. Then they will come to me because talent is last. It would be heartbreaking for me if they don’t work it out. Horrifying, really.”

Did Jon Hamm propose to his girlfriend?

Mad Men star Jon Hamm isn’t ready to take the plunge just yet!

Recently, rumors started circulating, suggesting that Jon had asked girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt, to marry him. But don’t count on it! He says he wasn’t born with the “marriage chip”!

He said, “That rumor comes up every six months or so it seems. But if you hear anything different, you let me know.”

Us Weekly reports:

So what’s the hold-up? According to the actor, being in a successful longterm relationship isn’t always easy.

“Like anything else, you pay attention to it and work hard at it,” he explained.

Perhaps the actor has good reason to be cautious about settling down: he previously told Parade that both he and Westfeldt, 40, grew up in divorced households.

“I don’t have the marriage chip,” he said. “Jen is the love of my life, and we’ve already been together four times longer than my parents were married.”

He’s so hot, it’s good to know that I still have a chance! (Only kidding!)

“Mad Men” actor Jon Hamm arrived at an office building in West Hollywood

Looks pretty cool in those jeans despite the fact that it’s 113 degrees in Hollywood today! 113! Yikes! It’s 80 here, and I still turned the AC on.

Love him! Mad Men has been so good this season!

Jon Hamm struggeled with depression after losing his parents at a young age.

Jon Hamm is one of the sexiest leading men in Hollywood right now. He plays the sexy ad-man Don Draper on AMC’s Mad Men.

He landed the Golden Globe-winning role when he was cast to play the lead character. But he admits, he was not their first choice. “I was on the bottom of everyone’s list.” He had read the script and fallen in love with the part: did he know Don would eventually be his? “I really really really wanted to do it and really really really responded to the character. And really really felt like I had a handle on it and fit the part well, for whatever reason. I knew it was an enormous risk for the network to put all their chips on… certainly no celebrity of any kind. No name to promote.”

Does Hamm understand Draper? “Well, I’m an actor. A big part of acting is subverting who you are in the service of a character. So I understand that. And the similarities between mine and Don’s life are well documented. Growing up as a bit of a wanderer, finding my own way, making my own story… Losing my parents early on, albeit not as dramatically and tragically as Don.”

When Jon Hamm was 10 years old his mother died, suddenly, of stomach cancer. Hamm went to live with his father, who had divorced his mother when he was two. “To lose a parent at 10 – which is young, though not unprecedented – it means you understand, at a very early age, what permanence is.”

And then, 10 years later, when Hamm was studying English at the University of Texas, his father died. “I was… unmoored by that. But I was very fortunate to have really good friends in my life whose parents sort of rallied: ‘We’re gonna help this kid out, because otherwise there’s going to be trouble…’”

“I struggled with chronic depression. I was in bad shape. I knew I had to get back in school and back in some kind of structured environment and… continue.”

What helped? “Work.”

Therapy? “I did do therapy and antidepressants for a brief period, which helped me. Which is what therapy does: it gives you another perspective when you are so lost in your own spiral, your own bullshit. It helps. And honestly? Antidepressants help! If you can change your brain chemistry enough to think: ‘I want to get up in the morning; I don’t want to sleep until four in the afternoon. I want to get up and go do my shit and go to work and…’ Reset the auto-meter, kick-start the engine!”

Hamm also talks about how he makes his relationship work with longtime girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt. After dating for twelve years, how do they still make it work? “We just… really love each other.”

Awwww….

The sexy Jon Hamm on the October cover of Details!

After years of struggling, Jon Hamm finally arrived with Mad Men, creating a style icon who’s come to help us rediscover our lost masculine cool. He is…THE LAST ALPHA MALE.

Mad Men’s Jon Hamm appears on the October cover of Details Magazine where he discusses that in high school he played sports as much as he acted, but something kept pulling him back to performing. He says, “I never minded standing up and looking like an idiot, which is tremendously helpful in this industry.” After years of struggling to make it in Hollywood, the feels lucky that his “overnight success” took as long as it did saying, “Absolutely, I don’t know how the Twilight kids or Miley Cyrus handle it. You make one bad decision and people in Thailand Twitter about it.” Speaking of Twitter, Hamm’s new movie The Town might not appeal to those who spend their days updating their status. “It’s almost like an old Hollywood movie. It’s got a love story, it’s got a crime element, but it’s very much for adults,” says Hamm. “There’s not a lot of candy for the Twitter-obsessed. It just deals with adult shit- no werewolves, no vampires. Yet … they’re retooling it for 3D.”

More highlights from the article:

Hamm arrived in Hollywood just in time for the reign of the CW and the WB. “If you didn’t look 18 years old, you weren’t working. And I didn’t look 18 years old when I was 18. I always looked 10 years older than I was.”

“L.A. represents opportunity. And, as has been proven over and over in the current media landscape, it doesn’t take much for them to put you on TV. If that’s all you want you can just be on The Bachelor or The Real Housewives or whatever show just wants oversized personalities, ridiculous behavior and zero dignity.”

“When you try to learn how to act, you approach it with respect. But if you just want to be famous…that’s not much different than porn. ‘I’m a movie star!’ Well, no, no you’re not. You’re a porn star, and that’s completely different.”

“One of the greatest pleasures of the job,” says Mad Men creator Matt Weiner, “has been to see Jon create the character of Don Draper. He’s smart, deep, and a natural leader. I can’t imagine making the show without him.”

Sarah Silverman, who met Hamm in 2000 through a group of friends, said, “When I turned in to Mad Men, I couldn’t believe he was this smoldering, brooding, sexual man. I was like ‘Oh my God—that’s Hamm!’ To me, he’s just this super-silly idiot. He’s one of those very few actors who are comedian-compatible.” Hamm played a cable guy on Silverman’s Comedy Central Show in 2007.
