Johnny Depp says his dream role is to play Broadway legend Carol Channing in a biopic — and now Channing has offered her blessing.
“It is not a new concept to me,” Channing said. “Not at all. Men have been imitating me for as long as I can remember. In fact, most of the impersonations I have seen have had a five-o’clock shadow. I imagine, when or if Johnny should portray me, he will succeed. Because a true artist, such as himself, is one who loves his or her creation and therefore represents their honest view of that which they are creating. I think he is a gifted performer and I would be very proud, as well as interested in seeing what his vision of me would be. Johnny is someone I would very much like to help me and my foundation (ChanningARTS.org) to bring the arts back into the public school system in America.”
Depp said in an interview last week that he would love to play Channing. “I love her, I really do, she’s amazing. With all the digital technology these days, I could probably pull it off!”
Johnny Depp has his eye on a gender-bending movie role - he would love to portray singer/actress Carol Channing in a biopic.
The character actor has regularly donned a series of bizarre outfits for his films, and even dressed up as a woman for his starring part in 1994 comedy Ed Wood.
He’s determined to go even further with a future role - by playing 88-year-old Channing.
He says, “My dream role would be to play musical legend Carol Channing in a biopic of her life. I love her, I really do, she’s amazing. With all the digital technology these days, I could probably pull it off!”
Will Johnny Depp be tapped to play Dean Martin in a biopic of his life? Martin’s daughter Deana reveals that Depp was her top choice to portray late singer Martin in a movie.
Deana acknowledged that a film is in the works, and will be directed by Joe Mantegna and written by comedian and actress Bonnie Hunt. Deana was speaking as a guest on a Boston radio program when she said, “[Depp] is a tremendous actor, he has that charm, that swagger, and the resemblance of my father is there. I’m sure he would do the role justice!”
Deana recently released a book called Memories Are Made of This, Dean Martin Through His Daughter’s Eyes and is a singer in her own right with a CD titled “Volare.”
Johnny Depp thrilled sick children at a London hospital on Wednesday - by dropping in unannounced, dressed as a pirate.
The actor has been in the U.K. capital this week to promote new movie Public Enemies, and took time out from his busy schedule to visit Great Ormond Street Hospital to cheer up young patients.
Dressed as his Pirates Of The Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow, he visited several wards - including the one his daughter Lily-Rose stayed in when she was treated for kidney failure in 2007.
A source said, “Johnny was so friendly with all the children on the ward and they absolutely loved his pirate outfit. He spoke to lots of the youngsters and staff - and made their day by posing for pictures with them all.”
The generous star has previously donated $1.5 million to the hospital to thank them for looking after his 10-year-old daughter during her health scare.
