My Review: John Mayer’s “Battle Studies”

john-mayer-album-cover_a

I received a copy of John Mayer’s new CD Battle Studios last week, and I have to be honest, I’ve listened to it about 25 times. I have never been a huge fan of John. I have always enjoyed his music – but not enough to actually buy one of his CD’s. And then I got this CD, and I was pleasantly surprised! I really love it! There are so many great songs! I especially like his duet with Taylor Swift, “Half of My Heart”, but my favorite is “Assassin”.

It’s been 3 years since John’s last CD, and this album was WELL worth the wait. It has eleven amazing songs on it! John is kicking off a HUGE tour to celebrate the new album, GO HERE to see when he’s coming to your city!

John Mayer’s Battle Studies was released on November 17th, 2009 on Columbia Records. The seven-time Grammy Award winner’s fourth studio album was co-produced by John Mayer and Steve Jordan and debuts three years after his critically acclaimed 2006 album, Continuum. Incorporating the warmth, melodies and simplicity of 70′s and 80′s California rock/pop, Battle Studies is a confessional, relaxed and liberated album recorded in a private home in California where Mayer lived and worked over the course of six months before wrapping at the famed Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.

The album’s first single, “Who Says” challenges conventional standards of what one can accomplish or undertake – despite society’s constraints. Battle Studies also showcases universal themes on “Heartbreak Warfare,” “Assassin,” and “War of My Life,” while flexing guitar chops on “Rock Song,” and a reinterpretation of “Crossroads.” The famously collaborative guitar player also invited one of music’s brightest new talents, Taylor Swift, to appear on “Half of My Heart.”

“I approach music like a director doing a period piece,” says Mayer. “Where Continuum was R&B and Soul, Battle Studies was written with the timelessness of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in mind. The melodies and message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity.”

A John Mayer North American tour is currently being planned and will follow the release of Battle Studies in early 2010, details to be announced soon. In the meantime, two rare performances by John Mayer Trio (John Mayer, Steve Jordan, Pino Palladino) have been announced for December – December 29th in San Diego at the Copley Symphony Hall and a New Year’s Eve show on December 31st in Las Vegas at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

In place of Mayer’s annual Holiday Revue, these concert events will raise money for two veteran’s charities – Military Outreach Ministry Camp Pendleton (MOM) and NCIRE – the Veterans Health Research Institute. MOM is a nonprofit organization that supports young military families of all faiths and NCIRE is the largest non-profit research institute affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Among other investigations, NCIRE researches the causes and best treatment for post- traumatic stress disorder and other combat-related injuries.

John Mayer defends his pot smoking

john_mayer_weed.jpg

John Mayer has defended his decision to sing about smoking marijuana on his new single.

The singer is releasing Who Says as the first song from his new album Battle Studies, which boldly begins with the question, “Who says I can’t get stoned?”

And Mayer hopes his controversial lyrics will spark debate among listeners as to why the drug has yet to be legalised in the U.S.

He tells PopEater.com, “It’s not a dirty word. It’s not a curse word. It’s a presentation of an idea that makes people think a little harder about what they’re listening to, which I don’t think is the worst thing in the world.”

Jennifer Aniston: “He’s Mine!” (According to OK! Magazine)

44-cover.jpg

I’m forever amused by tabloid covers. Do I really believe that Jennifer Aniston spoke the words “HE’S MINE!” Nope.

On John Mayer’s new album Battle Studies, the singer croons, “Friends, lovers or nothing — we can only ever be one.”

And after months of steamy, no-strings-attached hookups with gal pal Jennifer Aniston, the on-off pair have decided what they want to be to each other: full-time lovers!

In the mag, details of the reunited couple’s secret, steamy nights behind closed doors at Manhattan’s ultra-luxe Four Seasons Hotel. Plus, OK! reveals the Friends star’s plan to finally have the baby she’s been wanting for so long.

Sidenote: Did any of you see John Mayer on MTV’s Fantasy Factory?  I watched it, and I can TOTALLY see why he gets all the hottest Hollywood women. He has this weird charismatic, funny, confidant attitude. I sorta developed a good sized crush on the guy! I used to think he was the biggest douche! Now I totally get it!

Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer: Back On!

spl68843_0011.jpg

After failed summer flings with Bradley Cooper and Gerard Butler, Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer are back on, reports the new issue of Us Weekly (on stands now).

“He really got to her, and she’s hooked on him,” a source tells Us. “She just can’t let go.”

The couple first got cozy in April 2008 after spending five sexy days together in Miami, but went on to split twice — most recently in January 2009.

A source close to Mayer, 31, tells the new issue of Us, “They are very close. They remain great friends. He thinks she’s amazing, nice and smart, and he has nothing but respect for her.”

Although they dined separately in NYC on Sept. 22, a source tells Us they met later that night at the Four Seasons Hotel. Other reports have claimed they’ve been texting each other and recently dined with Aniston intimates Courteney Cox and David Arquette.

Aniston, 41, has said she “deeply, deeply cares” about Mayer, whose next album, Battle Studies, hits stores Nov. 17.

Seconds a source to Us: “There’s something about John that she just can’t resist.”

John Mayer on President Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

91013x3_mayer_b-gr_02.jpg

Last night, Vulture caught up with John Mayer to ask the singer his thoughts on healthcare reform and Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize. An excerpt of the interview is below:

What do you think about Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize?

I think it’s fantastic.

Why? What’s your overall opinion?

Do you think I’m smart enough to be able to articulate to you why our president receiving the Nobel Peace Prize is a bit early for things? What’s your overall opinion?

I think it’s a bit premature. Someone compared it to giving an Oscar to someone still making a film.

So you don’t think he should have it.

I don’t think its a bad thing, but maybe someone else deserved it more.

Who? If you don’t know who else should have gotten it instead of Obama, I love you, you’re beautiful, but shut your fucking mouth.

What do you think about health care? Would you take the public option?

Have you ever heard me play guitar? I’m really fucking good. You know what I’m bad at? Answering questions about public health care. This is not in my wheelhouse. Do you have any questions about music? I almost got a mad need to lighten up. You need to lighten up, because the questions you asked me were all trouble-making questions. If someone gave me the Nobel Peace Prize, and I didn’t deserve it, I would just shut my mouth and enjoy the hell out of it.
