John Mayer once tried to pick up pop starlet Jessie James by text-messaging her, “Let me tuck you in.”

James told “Boomer & Craig” on WFAN Sports Radio that she met the singer-songwriter in Manhattan.

“He had someone send for me [from] across the room,” James related. “He had a bunch of girls with him and he said, ‘We should [all] go back to my apartment.’ ”

She said Mayer left first to avoid the paparazzi, and when they got to Mayer’s apartment, “We were all hanging out and everyone started to gradually leave. It was just he and I at this point. I told him, ‘I need some taxi money, I’m gonna go home now.’ ”

Mayer asked James for her number and she gave it to him before leaving.

She recalled, “He texted me throughout the entire night while I was at the hotel room,” leaving messages like, “Let me tuck you in. I want to see you.”

While the show’s hosts labeled Mayer “a douche,” a friend of his shrugged it off, “He met her two years ago, it was not a big deal.”

John Mayer makes his way to a private party aboard MayerCraft Carrier 2, a Carnival Splendor special four-day cruise to Cabo, Mexico, and back to California. One passenger was very excited to see her idol walk past.

Is that his new girlfriend? Hehe.

Less than three weeks after his split from Jennifer Aniston, John Mayer had love on his mind at a charity bash on Thursday night.

The singer debuted a new song called “Half of My Heart” that he said he finished writing just hours before the show. The lyrics included the lines: “Half of my heart is a shotgun wedding to a bride with a newspaper ring/Half of my heart is the part of a man who knows he’s never really loved a thing.”

After the show — which also included performances by Gavin Rossdale and Jordin Sparks — John reflected on the evening in a Twitter post, saying: “That felt great to play again. ‘Half Of My Heart’ felt pretty good. Gonna tweak it a bit.”

John didn’t share the inspiration behind the song, but it does come at an interesting time as he ended his year-long relationship with Jennifer earlier this month — just weeks after their much-publicized coming out appearance at the Oscars.

Days after their split was announced, he also took to Twitter, declaring: “This heart didn’t come with instructions.”

Thursday’s event, benefiting VH1 Save The Music Foundation, was held aboard a cruise ship at the Port of Los Angeles pier in San Pedro, Calif. On Friday, John set sail on his second annual Mayercraft Carrier tour — a five-day cruise from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas during which he and several other musical guests perform.

According to sources one of the straws that broke the camels back in Jennifer Aniston and John Mayers relationship was that though he spent hours on social networking sites, he often didn’t have time to phone, text or otherwise get in touch with Jennifer.

“Every few hours, sometimes minutes, he’d update with some stupid line. And in her mind, she was like ‘He has time for all this Twittering, but he can’t send me a text, an email, make a call?’.”

As he copes with another split from Jennifer Aniston, John Mayer has turned to Twitter to express his thoughts.

“This heart didn’t come with instructions,” he posted on Monday.

Mayer’s heart has been all over the place during his time with Aniston, 40: They broke up two times in 13 months.

In August 2008, they first called it quits. At the time Mayer blabbed about the split to paparazzi outside his NYC gym, stressing that he was the one who broke things off.

“I ended a relationship to be alone because I don’t want to waste somebody’s time if something’s not right,” he said.

They got back together and even attended the Oscars together last month.

“You have to really be with someone that you know who has your back in that situation,” he said of attending the show with her.

Alas, they split a short time later.
