No, John Mayer is not doing comedy. The guitar slinger and recent Jennifer Aniston ex is standing up for the girl he just dumped. It probably doesn’t make her feel any better, but props to John for coming clean while going off on a group of photogs yesterday in New York City:

“If you guys are going to run stuff and run every lie under the sun, have somebody stand up for somebody,” the singer said, according to Us Weekly. “Have me as a man who ended a relationship stand here and write some truth. Have me stand up for somebody and write that Jennifer Aniston is the smartest, most sophisticated person I think I’ve ever met…”

“She’s one of the most lovely people I’ve ever met in my life and I’m going through something that’s a very personal thing and you have to give that up. You have to give everything up because you can’t have it all and it sucks.

“I’m sorry that the story’s not interesting,” Mayer added. “But it’s about time that somebody stands up for that girl and I think she’s great.”

Sounds like this tirade should probably be filed in the Doth Protest Too Much folder, but kudos nonetheless to John for venting with so much flourish.

I’m sad for Jennifer Aniston, not gonna lie.

Though John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston were decidedly mum about their romance, the singer is opening up about their breakup.

“There’s no lying, there’s no cheating, there’s no nothing,” Mayer told reporters about his split with Aniston after working out at an Equinox Gym in New York’s SoHo neighborhood.

If anything Mayer had only praise for his ex, saying: “Jennifer Aniston is the smartest, most sophisticated person I think I have ever met.”

So what went wrong? “People are different, people have different chemistry,” said Mayer, who appeared emotional, nervous and sad. “I ended a relationship to be alone, because I don’t want to waste somebody’s time if something’s not right.”

Sources confirmed that the duo, whose whirlwind romance began in April, mutually decided to split earlier this week.

Since the breakup, Aniston and Mayer have settled into their separate lives on different sides of the country.

Have John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston called it quits? All signs point to yes.

The “Daughters” crooner raised suspicion that he’s single again after his makeup artist took note of his puffy eyes before a recent gig, a source told the Daily News’ Rush & Molloy. Word has it Aniston has already moved on.

But according to Britain’s Mirror newspaper, Mayer was the one who initiated the split.

“There’s been a bit of tension for some time,” said a source close to the 30-year-old singer. “They initially opted for a break, hoping a trial split might make them stronger. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to have worked.”

The same source added that initially, Aniston was “furious” when Mayer told her it was over, but now she’s just sad and “a little heartbroken.”

The couple-no-longer first showed signs of togetherness in May.

The former “Friends” star has been unable to find love since her divorce four years ago from Brad Pitt, who, on the other hand, celebrated the birth of twins with Angelina Jolie last month.

Mayer has dated a slew of stars since hitting the big time including Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Aniston recently completed her latest movie, ironically titled “He’s Just Not That Into You.” Looks like this film may have hit a little too close to home.

Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson will ask John Mayer to be a godparent to their baby when it’s born.

Pete has recently formed a friendship with rocker John – a former beau of Ashlee’s sister Jessica – and reckons he would be a good role model for their baby girl, due in October.

A source close to the couple says: “Pete and John have been spending a lot of time together lately and they get on so well.

“They are firm friends. John gets a bad rap and is always portrayed as a bad boy but he’s got a heart of gold.

“Pete and Ashlee know that and they think he would make a great godparent.”

The source adds: “But they are holding back asking him at the moment because they are not sure how Ashlee’s sister Jessica would feel about her ex having such a strong link to her new niece.”

John Mayer says he doesn’t want to ban paparazzi, he just wants overzealous photographers to be regulated. Mayer and two other celebrities went before Los Angeles city officials today, asking for control measures to protect them from paparazzi.

John said in the hearing, “I don’t sit before you today to ask that you ban the paparazzi. I’m asking you to regulate it, officialize it, tax it, legitimize it.”

Milo Ventimiglia of “Heroes” and actor Eric Roberts also went before officials.

Jennifer Aniston beware – your man is chatting up other women.

Rocker John Mayer was caught chatting up a pretty U.S. tourist in Amsterdam, Holland last month just two days before his actress girlfriend joined him in the European city.

California girl Chaton Anderson claims Mayer approached her in a cafe and invited her out to dinner.

She tells In Touch magazine, “I think he thought I was from Amsterdam, because he said, ‘I am John and I am a singer.’ I laughed because I knew who he was.”

The pretty 32 year old continued to flirt with Mayer, who appeared to be single.

She adds, “I asked him what his relationship status was. He said, ‘It’s vague.’ I asked him what that meant and he said, `You know, it’s very vague.’ I just laughed. I never mentioned Jennifer and neither did he… I never would have guessed he had a girlfriend at all.”

Anderson never got the chance to meet up with Mayer for dinner because she lost her cellphone after exchanging numbers with the guitarist.
