Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Guy Pearce attend a photocall for their new movie ‘Lawless’ at the Cannes Film Festival.
I can’t wait to see this movie!
Gangster meets Western in Lawless, the true story of the freewheelin’ Bondurant brothers, bootlegging siblings taking the law into their own hands. This is the story of the rural hard-men that created the big city gangsters. Brazen and fearless, these young rebel brothers helped build the American Dream in this exuberant tale of what was to become crime’s first major gold rush. The youngest brother, Jack(Shia LaBeouf), fancies himself the next Al Capone; he dreams of sharp suits, guns, girls and fast cars, no matter the cost.
Ambitious and impulsive, he takes the family’s small-scale moonshining operation to the big leagues, to impress the gorgeous but off-limits Amish girl, Bertha (Mia Wasikowska). The middle brother, Howard (Jason Clarke), is the brawling muscle — loyal but reckless — never one to turn down a taste of white lightning. And eldest brother, Forrest (Tom Hardy), reluctantly accepts the changing times with grace and grit, leading the family with strength of character and silent determination against the beginnings of corporate greed.
An enigmatic and stunning Maggie (Jessica Chastain) comes to town with a hidden past, igniting his passion and almost saving him in the process. As the Bondurants’ legend grows, so too does the danger, and it’s not long before the brothers must face the consequences of their transgressions, or rewrite the myth and the lawthemselves.
Scarlett Johansson wore a fairy-tale(ish) special Dolce & Gabbana gown. Marion Cotillard wore a dress by Dior. Kristen Stewart is making a lot of “worst dressed” lists with her Balenciaga dress. (Hate to agree, but it is ugly).
Gwyneth Paltrow wore a mullet-style Prada dress (man, Prada was the designer of the night!). Kristen Wiig wore an orange Stella McCartney dress. Jessica Chastain is also showing up on a lost of “worst dressed” lists. She wore Louis Vuitton. Dakota Fanning wore a lavender gown by Louis Vuitton. Camille Belle wore a metallic beaded Ralph Lauren gown. Lana Del Rey wore a Joseph Altuzarra dress. Amber Heard wore a rose colored Zac Posen dress.
There are more pictures of her from Vogue Italia below. Here is a new interview:
Jessica Chastain already has a handful of films under her belt and an Oscar nomination. Now she is preparing another five movies. But she defines herself as “just a normal girl”.
“It is a profession that allows me to get to know lives and experiences that otherwise I could never discover. A fire burning inside of me, that regenerates me for each role. This is the reason why I chose to be an actress: I always play different roles. If we take into consideration the work I did inWilde Salome, The Tree of Life, The Help andThe Debt, you can see that my women don’t just live in different historical periods, they also have opposite personalities. I grew up with American cinema, especially that ofAl Pacino and the seventies, even though I have to say that I admire the work of you Europeans”.
Jessica discovered foreign cinema from across the Atlantic in New York, when she studied at the prestigious Juilliard School. ”Before coming to New York, I had never had the possibility to come close to creativity of that kind. No one in my family had ever had anything to do with that environment, therefore at my audition at the Juilliard I risked a lot, especially on an emotional level. When they accepted me I found myself in another world”.
“I have always known I wanted to be an actress, but my New Yorkexperience made me realize that my desire had nothing to do with becoming famous or making money, I was interested in exploring the human soul, its complexity, I wanted to work to understand something about life and myself. Being an actress means being in another person’s shoes and therefore understanding what the person whose role you play feels; but also connecting with other human beings, as a mark of profound professional intimacy, that often touches the soul”.
Who hit it out of the ballpark? I like Rosie’s look, but I’m not feeling Christina’s purple floral dress nor Jessica’s. It’s a style awards ceremony, so I set my expectations high.
Vanity Fair has just released their annual “Hollywood Issue” – which comes out in March. I really look forward to this issue every year, because normally it’s full of extraordinary up-and-coming actresses. But I’m not really getting that vibe from this cover. What do you think?
In the first-ever Hollywood Issue cover shoot from Vanity Fair contributing photographer Mario Testino, a bevy of Hollywood’s most precocious beauties lounge across a three-panel foldout—including two new Oscar nominees. The Art Deco set was designed to evoke the all-white, Jazz Age interiors of English decorator Syrie Maugham, whose clients included Bunny Mellon, Elsa Schiaparelli, and the Duchess of Windsor; V.F.’s fashion and style director, Jessica Diehl, put the 11 cover starlets in pastel satin dresses and frothy feathers to lend a 20s and 30s boudoir feel. Across the panels are actresses Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Elizabeth Olsen, Adepero Oduye, Shailene Woodley, Paula Patton, Felicity Jones, Lily Collins, and Brit Marling. Mara and Chastain—both featured on the front panel—were nominated for Academy Awards in January, Mara for her portrayal of cyberpunk hacker Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Chastain for her supporting role in Tate Taylor’s Oscar heavyweight, The Help. (The Julliard grad also had starring roles in Take Shelter, The Tree of Life, and Coriolanus in 2011.)
Either way, it’s a gorgeous picture, and I can’t wait until I get my hands on the hard copy. Here’s a behind-the-scenes video with Rooney Mara.
