Jennifer Connelly and her husband Paul Bettany are big fans of camping holidays – because photographers refuse to trail them during the “unglamourous” breaks.

The Hollywood couple, who wed in 2003, has blasted other stars who complain about the paparazzi – insisting it’s easy to find privacy away from the media.

They enjoy heading out on vacation to the countryside with their six-year-old son Stellan, and 11 year old Kai, from Connelly’s previous relationship, despite the harsh living conditions.

Bettany says, “Three weeks ago me and my missus and the kids were covered in mud for three days, because we got rained on from a great height when we were camping in the White Mountains (in New Hampshire)… It’s like proper camping out in the wild with bear canisters – you have to go and put your food 800 yards away in case the bears smell it.

“There’s no comfort, no blow-up beds or anything – you’re just in a tent and you fire up a little Primus (camping stove) to cook your food, and again you have to do that a long way from the tent in case the bear smells the food… We go as often as we can.

“It’s entirely normal, the most unglamourous thing you can do. Everybody stinks, and you’re cold and you’re wet and yet you see things you’d never see from a car or a hotel room. You walk every day and you’re away from everything.

“Some people in this business go, ‘I can’t go anywhere without the paparazzi’, but if you really want to you can find a way to go and be private.”

The couple’s son, Stellan (named after actor Stellan Skarsgård), was born on August 5, 2003. His godfather is the actor Charlie Condou. Jennifer also has a son, Kai (born 1997), from her relationship with photographer David Dougan.

GLAMOUR: Many think of you as the Queen of Angst. You’ve often said you find those roles interesting. But you aren’t, in real life, a dark, disturbed person, are you?

JENNIFER CONNELLY: No. I don’t feel angst-ridden!

GLAMOUR: Lately you’ve wanted to be considered for less serious roles. Did He’s Just Not That Into You fit the bill?

JC: Yeah. I had just done a film called Reservation Road, which was about a mother who loses a child, and it was harrowing. It was fun to do something very different.

GLAMOUR: A chick flick.

JC: It was not like anything I’d done.

GLAMOUR: Scarlett Johansson plays a yoga teacher intent on stealing your husband in He’s Just Not That Into You. And she does it without feeling any guilt.

JC: Oh, I’ve met all kinds of people who practice yoga who are uptight or messed up. And some people see yoga classes as pickup places.

GLAMOUR: In the movie, your character suspects that her husband is cheating. What do you consider to be a relationship deal breaker?

JC: I have a thing about honesty; I think it’s crucial to a relationship. Otherwise, one person holds all the power. It’s healthy to be straightforward, and it turns out you can wind up weathering a lot. Knowing that everything is on the table—what you see is what you get—lends a sense of safety.
