It looks like Jamie Lynn Spears is hitting the books.

The 16-year-old pregnant star was photographed in Hammond, La. on Friday carrying a GED book, used to study for a high school equivalency degree.

Spears, who announced last month that she’s expecting a baby, was pictured outside a building that houses both the Tangipahoa Parish School System Adult Education Center, which is a GED preparation site, and the Title I Parent Center, which teaches parents how to help their children learn reading skills.

The star of Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 previously attended the prestigious Parklane Academy in McComb, Miss., which she had been going to off-and-on for years, depending on her filming schedule. (She studied with tutors while in Los Angeles.)

Just before Thanksgiving of 2007, Spears enrolled at the school full time, saying that she had completed her filming, according to a school staffer. But after Thanksgiving, Spears said she was needed back in Los Angeles. The source says that if Spears had tried to stay, she likely would have been expelled for being pregnant. The school had no official comment.

Spears has been keeping a low-profile since she announced she is expecting a child – and hasn’t been photographed since her big sister, Britney Spears, suffered a meltdown last week.

However, two weeks before Jamie Lynn revealed her pregnancy, she was seen buying several pregnancy-related items, a source tells People.

Spears picked up a pregnancy calendar, the well-known book What to Expect When You’re Expecting and a sonogram frame, according to a clerk at the Brookhaven, Miss., baby boutique Expectations.

“It was just random things – she was in here with one of her girlfriends,” says the clerk, who asked not to be named. “It was about two weeks before it hit the news that she was having a baby. She hasn’t been back. She’s probably laying low.”

Amid all the hateful, untrue rumors of family turmoil following Jamie Lynn Spears’ decision to talk exclusively to OK! about her shocking surprise pregnancy, the 16-year-old star has received some support from a very unexpected source — Kevin Federline.

Sources close to the Spears and Federline families reveal exclusively to OK! that Kevin, who was married to Jamie Lynn’s sister Britney and is currently embroiled in a nasty custody battle with the troubled pop star, has reached out to his former sister-in-law and her mother Lynne as they face the ordeal of being in the scandal spotlight.

“Kevin has long thought of Jamie Lynn as a little sister,” a Federline family member shares with OK!. The wannabe rapper spoke with Lynne before the baby news dropped and, according to the source, “he was heartbroken because he was concerned about what it would mean for Jamie Lynn’s future.” But now that the dust has begun to settle, “he just wants to be part of the support system.”

Jamie Lynn Spears was left heartbroken after finding out the father of her unborn baby, Casey Aldridge had cheated on her. The 16-year-old confirmed she is pregnant with Casey Aldridge’s child earlier this month, but it is now alleged he had been dating other girls behind the Zoey 101 star’s back.

Aldridge is accused of being romantically involved with Whitney Seals from Magnolia, Mississippi, around the time the actress announced in an interview with OK! magazine she was to be a mother. Seals’ brother, Kevin, tells MSNBC.com, “Whitney and Casey have been dating for months. I know Jamie Lynn was really upset and jealous when she found out about it.”

Jamie Lynn Spears’ father is “still furious” with his ex-wife Lynne’s decision to cash-in on their 16-year-old daughter’s pregnancy.

Jamie “did not spend Christmas with [Lynne] or Jamie Lynn and instead stayed in LA to work,” a Spears family source tells Usmagazine.com.

“He doesn’t get a dime from his daughters,” the source says. “He busts his ass to take care of himself. That’s why he’s so furious with Lynne.”

Jamie has been working long hours as a private chef to make a living while ex-wife Lynne, as Us Weekly reports in its latest issue, arranged a $1 million deal with OK! magazine for the story of Jamie Lynn’s pregnancy. Lynne also receives a percentage of her daughters’ salaries.

Jamie Lynn Spears’s hometown promises to continue to be a safe haven for the pregnant teen star.

“We’ll embrace and love the baby, just as we’ve loved Britney and Jamie Lynn,” a close family friend tells PEOPLE.

Connie Brabham, a local gift shop owner and longtime friend of the Spears family, says, “Kentwood respects Jamie Lynn because she could have quietly gotten an abortion but chose to have the baby.”

“This town has watched Britney and Jamie Lynn grow up, and we’re certainly not going to turn our back on them,” Brabham says. “Every family goes through hard times, and Britney and Jamie Lynn know Kentwood will always be here for them.”

Brabham adds that people should not judge mom Lynne Spears for brokering a magazine deal in which the controversial pregnancy was announced. “The word [of the pregnancy] was going to get out, anyway,” she explains. “Lynne was simply putting the story out on the family’s terms, doing what’s in her family’s best interests.”
