James McAvoy was humbled by his trip to Uganda to shoot The Last King of Scotland – because the poverty he witnessed in the African country made him realize he had nothing to complain about.

The Scottish star was brought up by his maternal grandparents in the rough Drumchapel area of Glasgow after his parents split when he was just seven years old.

McAvoy had long considered himself to have lived a hard life, but once he witnessed first-hand the desperate conditions most Ugandans had to live in, he was more appreciative of his upbringing.

He says, “I used to think that (I had a tough upbringing). I used to have a bit of a working-class chip on my shoulder, because the area I come from is so rough. But then I went to Uganda to make the film The Last King of Scotland and I looked around at the poverty there, and I realized that, in relative world terms, I’m actually super-duper, upper-class, through-the-roof posh. Any chip I had on my shoulder about Glasgow was insulting to the people who lived in other parts of the world, and it made me completely re-evaluate my place in it.”

James McAvoy is finding it difficult to deal with his increasing fame – especially when fans try to talk to him in public bathrooms.

The Scottish actor has enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom since his leading roles in wartime epic Atonement and action blockbuster Wanted – but isn’t impressed with fans greeting him in public places.

He tells Britain’s Arena magazine, “People are never nasty to me, but I do find it disconcerting when you’re having a piss and the bloke next to you goes, ‘Hey man, love the movie,’ and I’m like, ‘Er…Thanks.’”

“It’s even worse when they try to shake your hand. I’m like, ‘F**k off, wash your hand, it’s just been on your d*ck.’”

Filming love scenes with Angelina Jolie seems like a dream job — unless you’re Angie’s Wanted co-star James McAvoy! “I can tell you what it was like to kiss her on a film set: It was awkward, sweaty and not very nice,” says the Scottish actor. “There was angst involved in that, as always. I don’t think Brad Pitt felt threatened for one moment.”

Though Angelina and James lack chemistry together, they’ve each found lasting love with a co-star: Angelina fell in love with Brad on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and James met his wife, Anne-Marie Duff, when they played a couple on the BBC drama Shameless!

James McAvoy refuses to advertise products because he wants fans to concentrate on his movies – and not be sidetracked by promotions.

The Atonement star is suspicious of thespians who associate themselves with a certain brand, insisting that actors are not salesmen and he won’t compromise his career to make extra money.

He says, “As soon as you start to try and sell people stuff then surely you contravene some contract with the film-going public? Even if they (the public) know the type of clothes you like to wear – then it becomes funny for them watching you wearing a tux. I know those are tiny little things but I do think that makes a difference.”
