After nearly three years together, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal called it quits in early December. “It broke his heart,” an insider reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly. A source close to Gyllenhaal, 29, explains that the once-golden couple “fought constantly in the past few months,” and that the relationship concluded over a series of phone calls. Adds another source, “No one cheated. There was no drama.”
After the pair met on the set of the film Rendition, their romance began in March 2007 — when Witherspoon, now 33, was still smarting from her 2006 divorce from husband of seven years Ryan Phillippe, 35, with whom she has two children (Ava, 10, and Deacon, 6). Indeed, sources say that her divorce and her kids were the two driving factors in the split. “She felt pressured to wed again but she wasn’t ready,” an insider says. “She couldn’t give Jake enough and she got cold feet. Jake wanted all of her.” Although Gyllenhaal moved into her $5 million home in June 2008, Witherspoon struggled to quell her doubts about his suitability as a stepfather and long-term partner. “She really worried that they didn’t have enough in common,” the pal says.
As a hands-on Mom, the “super-type A” actress also fretted over losing time with her kids to her boyfriend. “When she was giving all of her energy to Jake, she felt like she wasn’t giving her kids enough,” the source says. Not that Gyllenhaal didn’t try with Ava and Deacon, the insider points out: “He was great with the kids, but she felt like he didn’t get the whole scope of what that entailed.”
Contrary to reports elsewhere Sunday, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal have not broken up. A rep for Witherspoon, 33, tells Usmagazine.com: “It’s not true. They have not split.”
The actress met Gyllenhaal, 28, while filming 2007′s Rendition, and the pair stepped out together, confirming their relationship in summer 2008.
In the April 2009 issue of Elle, the actress gushed about Gyllenhaal. “He’s fabulous. He really is a fantastic guy.”
Witherspoon divorced actor Ryan Phillippe in 2007 after eight years together; they have two children: Ava, 10, and Deacon, 6. After two years together, Gyllenhaal and girlfriend Kirsten Dunst called it quits in 2004.
Witherspoon told Parade magazine last year, “Things change..But your ability to love remains intact. Oh, I have a lot of hope for love! I do!”

Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a street urchin in 6th century Persia. After showing valor in battle, he is adopted by the king as his heir, so the king’s two sons will not fight over the throne. He teams up with Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) to rescue the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that controls time, from the hands of the villainous nobleman, Nizam (Ben Kingsley).
Empire has just premiered two new posters for the upcoming Jake Gyllenhaal video game adaptation, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean, Armageddon) produced action-adventure is set to be one of 2010’s biggest blockbusters, with both a big-budget and an existing video game fan base to help it do well at the box office.
The Prince of Persia video game series was (and still is) extremely popular, so much so it’s kind of a shock that it’s taken them this long to get it firmly on the way to theaters (a film has been in the works as far back as before the 2003 video game reboot of the original 1989 Prince of Perisa video game).
The big-screen adaptation of POP follows “rogue prince” Dasdan (Gyllenhaal) and a mysterious princess called Tamina (Gemma Arterton), who together (reluctantly) safeguard an ancient dagger that could unlock what is known as the Sands of Time, a force which allows its possessor to manipulate (or reverse) time and thus rule the world.
Also starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina, directed by Mike Newell, and out on May 28, 2010, you’ll need to set expectations to “epic” for this one.
Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal are seen leaving Burn 60 gym together in Brentwood. On the way out, Reese followed closely behind Jake, who did not look like he had worked out at all. The couple spent time together while Reese is on a break from filming an untitled James L. Brooks project.
