After two months of what one Witherspoon source calls the actress’ “trying out a courtship” with Jake Gyllenhaal after her painful split from actor Ryan Phillippe, a Gyllenhaaal pal tells Us, “it is a definite romance.”

What else would you expect, says another Witherspoon pal, since the actress became determined to win Gyllenhaal’s heart soon after separating from Phillippe October 30.

“Reese was the pursuer and really wanted to date Jake,” says a pal of the Oscar winner, who costars with her new beau in the just-wrapped drama Rendition.

“She’s known him for a while and thought he was intelligent and charming.”

And the feeling is definitely mutual. “Jake doesn’t want a party girl at all,” says a Gyllenhaal pal, who says the relationship blossomed over DVD and takeout nights at home and long talks about movies.

“Reese is perfect because she understands the business and also the importance of family. Plus, he admires her talent, thinks she is beautiful and he respects her values. He respects everything about her actually.”

Catching the eye and winning the respect of one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors was exactly what Witherspoon, 31, needed after her marriage to Phillippe crashed and burned. “She needed to prove to herself that she was sexy and desirable.”

Five months after announcing her split from husband Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon seems to be wading back into the dating pool – with Jake Gyllenhaal, her costar in the upcoming CIA thriller Rendition.

Although the two have been careful to avoid the spotlight, they were spotted March 23 dining with two other couples at L.A.’s Il Sole. “They were cuddling,” an observer tells PEOPLE in its new issue. “It looked very playful.”

And now friends of both say the relationship extends beyond the occasional dinner. “In the last month, they’ve been spending a lot more time together,” says a source close to Gyllenhaal, adding that the actor has even met up with Witherspoon, 31, and her kids – daughter Ava, 7, and son Deacon, 3 – in New York City. At 26, he is five years her junior, but “Jake really likes her and isn’t at all concerned that she has two kids.”

Still, Witherspoon isn’t rushing into another high-profile Hollywood relationship, says a source close to the Oscar winner. “[Reese] is still very, very hurt by Ryan and it will take a long time to get over that,” the source explains. “[But she and Jake] have a mutual interest. They are taking it slow and getting to know each other.”

One common point may be their homebody lifestyles. Family-first Witherspoon routinely picks up her kids from school and takes Ava for mommy-and-me manicures. As for Gyllenhaal – who’s uncle to sister Maggie’s 6-month-old daughter Ramona and godfather to Heath Ledger’s 17-month-old Matilda – he’s “very into kids,” says a source.

Although he dated nightlife-loving Kirsten Dunst for nearly two years, “Jake has never been about staying out late partying,” the insider adds. “This is what he wants.”

 

Joblo.com reports that New Line is desperate to secure the star for the adaptation of the comic ‘Shazam!’ in case he agrees to be the next Spiderman instead.

As previously reported, Tobey Maguire confirmed he will not be returning Spiderman 4, and as many film fans know, Gyllenhaal lost a bitterly fought battle to land the role back in 2001.

With Gyllenhaal looking like the logical replacement, New Line are reportedly keen to intercept the actor before any offer is made.

He returned the favor the next day, stopping by The Mandarin Oriental hotel in Midtown Manhattan to see Reese. Their blossoming love affair is taking its toll on her estranged husband, Ryan Phillippe. OK! has learned that the Breach star has been begging his soon-to-be ex-wife to give their relationship another shot and that he is determined to do whatever it takes to win back the love of his life.

THE Devil Wears Prada actress ANNE HATHAWAY has dished the dirt on some of Hollywood’s hunkiest leading men and how they like to kiss. And while she rates Becoming Jane co-star JAMES McAVOY as a true gent who never tries to slip the tongue – Anne reveals that JAKE GYLLENHAAL asked to touch her boobs in Brokeback Mountain.

She told radio station Heart: “Sometimes you work with actors, and they can be lovely guys, but they have kind of dodgy instincts when it comes to kissing in scenes. “They want to try to make it look a bit too real if you know what I mean. With James, right before we started he turned to me and said ‘closed mouths, no tongue’ and that’s what I normally say to people – so it was a pleasure.”

Anne then cheekily added: “There was this scene in Brokeback Mountain where I get my kit off and I’m in the car with Jake Gyllenhaal and he’s touched my shoulder and he’s touched my stomach and he’s touched around my back. Everywhere except for, you know, ‘the girls’. So the director yells cut and we go behind a screen and I’m putting my clothes back on and Jake comes up to me and says: ‘Annie, the thing is, the scene, in real life I would… and the director’s not yelling cut, so… can I?’ I just turned to him and said: ‘It’s okay Jake, yes, you can touch my boobs.‘”

Jake Gyllenhaal seems to have caught the baby bug from his sister, Maggie, who gave birth to her first child last fall.

“I’m definitely thinking about it, having a child. Look, the most important job for a man is to find the right woman,” Gyllenhaal told GQ magazine. “It’s the best we can do.”

Gyllenhaal appears to think his father did a pretty good job picking a mate. “I thank my father for choosing my mother,” he said. “She’s wonderful in so many ways. And she chose well too. I’ve noticed in life that the mother, first, has a primary job and as a father our job is to pick a caring, smart, mindful woman.”
