Sandra Oh announces she’s leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Sandra Oh has decided to move on from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ after being with the ABC hit for 8 years. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sandra will leave after the upcoming 10th season. She’s decided to pursue other opportunities beyond ‘Grey’s.’

“Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go,” an emotional Oh tells THR. “It’s such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey’s writers to think of why she’s going to go.”

Oh says she first began thinking about wrapping her Grey’s run in May 2012 when what she called the “original six” inked new two-year deals to take them through the 10th season of the series. “I’ve gone through a lot of therapy over this,” she says through tears. “I started thinking about it because I had to prepare myself. I gave myself two years to emotionally let go. At the end of last season, Shonda took me aside and said, ‘What are your thoughts?’ I said, ‘I’m ready.'”

Oh informed her co-stars about her upcoming exit during Tuesday’s table read for the show’s 200th episode and said the decision “doesn’t feel real” yet. “I seriously think I need that much support over processing it over this next year for me to be able to leave fully and leave in a way that I feel like Cristina deserves,” she says, noting that Rhimes has supported her every step of the way. “For the first time, at least for my character, you actually have an endpoint, which in series television you never or very rarely have.”

No word yet on how they will handle her character leaving the show. No additional castmembers are expected to leave, although the two-year contracts for stars Patrick Dempsey (Derek), Ellen Pompeo (Meredith), Justin Chambers (Alex), James Pickens Jr. (Webber) and Chandra Wilson (Bailey) are up at the end of season 10.

Will you miss her?

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is never going to end, so says ABC

If you’re a ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ fan, then you’re in luck! The ABC medical drama is here to stay….for a while.

“We would like to see it on our network for many years,” the present of ABC said at the Summer TCA’s on Sunday.

One person who may be tired of the show (besides moi), is Patrick Dempsey. The McDreamy actor said recently that Grey’s has “the same storyline over and over.” After he made that statement, he revealed that he isn’t necessarily leaving the show, but that he “would race full-time if [he] could right now.” Patrick is currently promoting his new miniseries “Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans.”

Whatever happens to McDreamy in the future, Lee said that he thinks “Grey’s” will “go on for many, many years to come,” despite the fact that ratings for the show, which is now entering its tenth season, have dropped off.

Noting that creator Shonda Rhimes would “yell at” him if he divulged what cast changes and twists might be in the future for “Grey’s,” Lee emphasized that the drama is doing fine for ABC ratings-wise, especially when DVR usage is factored in (the show picks up 2.5 million additional viewers when other platforms are added, Lee said).

“Shonda is an extraordinary creative force,” Lee said. “She is certainly planning” many seasons in advance, he added.

I haven’t watched Grey’s in years, and exactly for the reason Patrick gave. It’s hard to watch the same storyline over and over. I think the only way a show like this could survive is by a massive character change. I know people love the characters who have been there from the beginning, but it’s hard to watch the same ol’ material time after time. I really enjoyed the show for a long time….then to me, it just got pretty boring.

Patrick Dempsey May Stick It Out On Grey’s Anatomy.

Back in May of last year, Patrick Dempsey dropped the bombshell that he wouldn’t be returning to ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘, but it seems he’s having a change of heart.

The biggest point for me in negotiations is getting time off to come race, so if I don’t miss races, I’ll probably stay on Grey’s Anatomy.  The show’s doing really well. We were number one on Thursday night, so it continues to get a lot of legs. ABC hasn’t had a show this year that has kind of stepped up. We’re certainly talking about the future.

Even though Patrick says his heart is in racing, he still enjoys ‘Grey’s’:

But I also enjoy the show. It keeps me in town so I can be around my family. So we’ll see. Hopefully we can work out a deal.”

This sounds like that typical “we’re in money negotiations” talk, doesn’t it?  Hopefully they can come to an agreement because fans will not be too happy to see McDreamy leave anytime soon!
