Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawk and Amanda Peet to star in gang movie.

ruffalohawkpeet.jpg

Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke, and Amanda Peet will star together in the Brian Goodman-directed autobiographical crime drama Real Men Cry for Yari Film Group.

The story is about childhood friends Paulie (Hawke) and Brian (Ruffalo) who are forced to survive on the streets of South Boston through a life of petty thievery. They join a local gang of criminals, but Brian struggles to cope with his work while maintaining a relationship with Paulie, his wife (Peet), and his son.

The project marks Goodman’s feature directorial debut. He previously acted in a number of films, including Munich and The Last Castle. Ruffalo’s character is based on a friend of Goodman’s who is currently serving 100 years in prison for armed robbery. Goodman himself also served time in prison and has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse.

”I sat down with Mark and Ethan and told them, ‘You are two on a very short list of men who could’ve been in films 35 years ago, when men were men,”’ Goodman said. Ruffalo next appears in Blindness, Margaret, and The Brothers Bloom. Hawke appears in Tonight at Noon and Daybreakers. Peet next appears in Martian Child.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love Mark Ruffalo?

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead

It’s a sight you never thought you’d see - a stark naked Philip Seymour Hoffman in the very first frame of Sidney Lumet’s latest, “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.”

The Oscar-winning actor and an equally nude Marisa Tomei kick off the harrowing thriller with a steamy sex scene that had everyone talking Wednesday night at the Cinema Society screening of Lumet’s 45th film.

Hoffman, Tomei and co-star Ethan Hawke were on hand for the Sagatiba Rum-sponsored showing and the star-studded after-party on the roof lounge of the Gramercy Park Hotel.

Among those enthralled by the tale of a robbery gone horribly awry were Lauren Bacall, Sheryl Crow, Patricia Clarkson, Tommy Hilfiger, Rachel Roy, Cynthia Rowley, Sante D’Orazio, newly pregnant Julianna Margulies and supermodel Hana Soukupova (whose apartment was used for one of the grittier scenes).

Meanwhile, guests downstairs at the Rose Bar were getting a scene of their own. Ryan Gosling proved he’s over his ex, Rachel McAdams, by cozying up to a “hot brunette who kept showing him her phone.”

Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead:

Master filmmaker Sidney Lumet directs this absorbing suspense thriller about a family facing the worst enemy of all itself. Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Andy, an overextended broker who lures his younger brother, Hank (Ethan Hawke), into a larcenous scheme: the pair will rob a suburban mom-and-pop jewelry store that appears to be the quintessential easy target. The problem is, the store owners are Andy and Hanks actual mom and pop and, when the seemingly perfect crime goes awry, the damage lands right at their doorstep. Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei plays Hoffmans trophy wife, who is having a clandestine affair with Hawke, and the stellar cast also includes Albert Finney as the family patriarch who pursues justice at all costs, completely unaware that the culprits he is hunting are his own sons. A classy, classic heist-gone-wrong drama in the tradition of The Killing and Lumets own The Anderson Tapes, BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOW YOURE DEAD is smart enough to know that we often have the most to fear from those who are near and dear.

Ethan Hawke has signed on to topline Lionsgate’s futuristic vampire film “Daybreakers.”

Australian horror veterans Peter and Michael Spierig (”Undead”) wrote and will helm the high-concept project, which begins shooting in July in Australia, with Weta Workshop creating the creature effects.

Hawke will play a researcher in the year 2017, when a plague has transformed most of the world’s population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a discovery that has the power to save the human race.

Ethan and I have had a love affair ever since “The Explorers” only he doesn’t know it.  I recently watched that movie again with my sons - and I still liked it.  River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke?  Doesn’t get much better than that.

Ethan Hawke: Uma a ‘Phenomenal’ Mom

uthurman.jpg

Though both Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman have never publicly discussed the private reasons for the 2004 break-up of their marriage, being in the limelight did not help the relationship, he now says.

“To be honest, it was an undue pressure on my marriage,” Hawke, currently appearing in a New York stage production of Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia, tells Parade magazine for its Sunday issue.

“I didn’t like being famous when I was single, and what it did to my celebrity status to be married to another famous person was a huge pressure – one I didn’t enjoy. And it had nothing to do with her. Nothing to do with her,” Hawke, 36, says with a shake of his head.

Hawke says he considers being father to his two children with Thurman – daughter Maya, 8, and son Levon, 4 – “the greatest pleasure in my life. It’s the only role that, if I fail, I will consider my life a failure.”

Having had parents who divorced, Hawke is aware of how such a split affects the kids. Speaking of himself and Thurman, he says, “Our burden is just getting along, not hurting each other’s feelings, and letting each other grow – letting the tides take our lives away from each other and dealing with the disappointment of a dream that didn’t happen.”

When it comes to speaking about Thurman, also 36, Hawke takes the high road, says the magazine. “She’s my children’s mother,” he says. “You have to keep that above anything else. If you bring two people into the world together, that supersedes anything else.”

He also says about her devotion to raising the children properly, “She’s a great mother, and raising the kids is a priority for both of us. We’re so fortunate that we have each other’s back in that way. Because I write and act in theater, it’s a lot easier for me to stay in the city. But my ex-wife has done a phenomenal job of that as well. She plans all her movies to shoot in New York.”

As for sharing parental duties with Thurman in the big city, Hawke adds, “We live down the street from each other. If we lived down the street from each other in Minneapolis, I’d have to watch every car go in and out of the driveway. I’d know how late she stayed out. I don’t have to know any of that stuff.”
