Ethan Hawke Talks ‘Boyhood’ and Fatherhood

SINISTER Premieres in LA

Have you seen the film Boyhood yet?  The movie, which was written, produced and directed by Richard Linklater, was filmed over 12 years with the same cast and tells the story of a boy, played by Ellar Coltrane, growing up from ages 5 to 18.  Patricia Arquette plays the mother, while Ethan Hawke plays the father.

Hawke, who made the Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight films with Linklater as well, sat down with Beach magazine to discuss the film and his real life experience of fatherhood.

On Boyhood:

You can’t imagine what it’s like doing a scene with a 6-year-old boy where I’m 32 years old and I take him bowling and I’m chain smoking in a GTO, then to do the last scene of the movie, where I’m 43 and he’s 18, and so much has happened in between.

It’s the only movie that I’ve ever done that isn’t like anything else.

On being a father:

My theory is that there’s nothing hard about being a father. Being a father is one of the most natural things—it’s the rest of life that’s so hard. Co-parenting, finding the right school—all of that crap is a giant headache.

But being a father is incredibly simple. I always wanted to be a father. I have four kids now—three daughters and a son.

You can see the whole interview here

I’m dying to see this movie.  It’s gotten such incredible reviews and is such an interesting concept.  Must see.

Ethan Hawke Talks Uma Thurman Marriage

Ethan Hawke Talks Uma Thurman Marriage

In the new issue of Elle magazine, Ethan Hawke has opened up about marrying Uma Thurman at such a young age.

Us Magazine has the full report:

If Ethan Hawke knew 15 years ago what he knows now, he might never have made it down the aisle. Reflecting on his past in a new interview for the September issue of Elle magazine, the Before Midnight actor, now 42, admits that he probably wasn’t ready to make a commitment as big as marriage when he said “I do” to ex-wife Uma Thurman in 1998. But at the time, he thought it would give his increasingly hectic lifestyle some stability.

“Success when you’re young is really overwhelming,” he explains to Elle. “The world felt out of control. And I wanted to stop it from spinning so fast. I thought marriage would decrease my variables or something. I was absolutely wrong.”

Hawke — 27 when he wed Thurman, with whom he shares daughter Maya, 14, and son Levon, 10 — notes that he was likely too immature, both emotionally and biologically, to make such a huge decision. “There was this discovery that the male brain isn’t done until 28. I definitely think my frontal lobe was not finished,” he confesses. “I had no business taking vows that would last more than two weeks.”

“My personal opinion? The guy who’s got it right is Derek Jeter,” he continues. “He lives his life like, ‘Hey man, I play shortstop for the New York Yankees. And I’m not going to get married until I’m no longer a shortstop for the New York Yankees.’ Which is incredibly smart.”

Hawke and Thurman were married for five years before separating in 2003. Two years later, in August 2005, they finalized their divorce. Since then, the Total Recall actor has remarried; he and wife Ryan Hawke (nee Shawhughes) wed in 2008 and have two young daughters, Clementine and Indiana.

The father of four also opens up to Elle about life before Thurman. One particularly fond memory? His first time having sex.

“I was very, very lucky,” he recalls. “I lost my virginity to someone I cared for very much and who cared very much for me. The thing that’s so important for young people to know is that, if you use protection, sex is one of the few vices you can have as a young person.”

It sounds like he knows what he’s doing now, that’s for sure!

Ethan Hawke Will Always Remember Kissing Angelina Jolie

Ethan Hawke was the guest on an episode of Watch What Happens Live two nights ago and had definitely had a couple drinks!

Why? because when he talked to host Andy Cohen (who has been known to get a little boozy on this celeb staple show), he got reallll into talking about his onscreen kis will actress Angelina Jolie!

Okay, let me backtrack.  was asked for his “best onscreen kiss” from Cohen,  Ethan replied, “With all due respect – the woman has been in the press a lot lately – but my best onscreen kiss was with Angelina Jolie… Why is Amadeus, Wolfgang Mozart a genius? Angelina Jolie was born to whittle men, to make them weak. And when she kisses you, you don’t know your name.”

DANG! Pretty solid endorsement from Hawke, especially since later he essentially said his hottest hookups were from non-famous people:

The facts are the more hot, they are the more acclaimed they are for being hot… the less hot they are. So the hottest chick I’ve ever been with on-screen was not anybody anyone has ever heard of. I wish this weren’t true, but let’s face it – I had a good few years. But the most wonderful experiences didn’t happen with anyone you have ever heard of.”

As you may or may not know, Jolie and Hawke may have had an affair while working together on the film Taking Lives (there were lots of rumors about it), but nothing was confirmed!  Eek! Love it! Watch the whole interview HERE!
