Emma Watson Is Taking A Year Off To Read And Learn More About Feminism

Screen Shot 2016-02-22 at 11.50.06 AM

We should all be so lucky!

Still, I love Emma Watson for being like, “wait a minute, I need to do something and it’s more important than making dumb movies.” In the newest Paper magazine, she has a conversation with bell hooks, a super important Feminist writer/scholar.  If you have the time, you should read the full Paper Mag piece here, because it’s super rad and goes in depth in not an obnoxious or controversial way. Watson and hooks talk about feminism and Emma’s new feminist book club. Here’s the part about taking a year off:

Watson: I’m reading so much and exposing myself to so many new ideas. It almost feels like the chemistry and the structure of my brain is changing so rapidly sometimes. It feels as if sometimes I’m struggling to keep up with myself. It’s a really cool period of time for me. My work that I do for the UN is all very clearly outlined, but my personal views and opinions are still being defined, really. So it’ll be an interesting time.

hooks: As part of your efforts for activism and for self-growth, you’re taking a year away from acting. That’s a big decision.

Watson: I’m taking a year away from acting to focus on two things, really. My own personal development is one. I know that you read a book a day. My own personal task is to read a book a week, and also to read a book a month as part of my book club. I’m doing a huge amount of reading and study just on my own. I almost thought about going and doing a year of gender studies, then I realized that I was learning so much by being on the ground and just speaking with people and doing my reading. That I was learning so much on my own. I actually wanted to keep on the path that I’m on. I’m reading a lot this year, and I want to do a lot of listening.

She’s giving herself a crash-course in feminist history and activism, and I’m into it.  What do you think of her year of learning?

Emma Watson’s New Boyfriend Is A Hot, Rich Tech Guru

Emma Watson At The 'Late Show With David Letterman'

Emma Watson has a new dude! And of course, he’s just as impressive as y’all would have thought.

The Harry Potter actress is dating a dude named Mack Knight, and we know this because the two went to see Hamilton together this weekend, and that’s a show you only take somebody you’re banging. While it’s still in the early stages, Knight looked super protective over Emma, which is pretty adorable, even though in these pics he’s looking more like her dad than her boif.

So who is the dude? Justa 35 year old, Princeton and Columbia educated normal rich dude who works in Silicon Valley for a tech company Medallia, which sells software that processes customer feedback for businesses. Sounds like a catch!

What do you think of Emma’s new MAN?

Emma Watson blasts sexism in Hollywood

Emma Watson blasts sexism in Hollywood

Former “Harry Potter” actress Emma Watson says that sexism is running rampant in Hollywood, but says that it’s not just the men who are at fault. Apparently, she has found that women are just as guilty when it comes to discriminating against other women.

In a new interview, she revealed, “I have experienced sexism in that I have been directed by male directors seventeen times and only twice by women. Of the producers I’ve worked with, thirteen have been male and only one has been a woman. But I am lucky, I have always insisted on being treated equally and have generally won that equality. Most of the problems I have encountered have been in the media, where I have been treated so incredibly differently from my male co-stars.”

She launched the HeForShe campaign last September and says that it’s made her more aware of the inequality that exists within the film industry.

She said, “If something does go wrong in the workplace, the support network is not brilliant. The men at the top often find it difficult to relate to a lot of the problems women face and therefore we aren’t taken very seriously. Yet, women are just as guilty of discriminating against women. Some of the best feminists I have encountered are men, like Steve Chbosky who directed me in ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower,’ and director James Ponsoldt who I am working with at the moment. Some women can be incredibly prejudiced against other women!”

Maybe one day she will begin directing movies and change the landscape for all women?
