Tom Hardy signs on to play Elton John in new biopic. WTH?

Tom Hardy Heads To The Soho Hotel

When you think Elton John – do you think Tom Hardy? In what might be the strangest casting news I’ve heard in AGES…. it’s been announced that Tom Hardy has signed on to play Elton John in a new biopic.

Tom Hardy will star as Elton John in Rocket Pictures’ Rocketman, and Focus Features has come aboard to give the film a major U.S. release, producers announced today.

The Hardy deal caps a lengthy search to cast the role of Elton in the film, which will be co-financed by AI Film.

Much like the man himself, Rocketman is a larger-than-life movie musical spectacle that tells the story of a child prodigy turned music legend. Elton will re-record many of his iconic hits to parallel the emotional beats of the film that will have audiences on their feet, singing along to his much loved music. The film is scheduled to shoot in fall 2014.

‘Rocketman’ will be produced by Elton’s partner, David Furnish.

Does Tom know how to sing – OR play the piano? Doesn’t this seem like the craziest casting?

Tom Hardy rumored to play Elton John in upcoming ‘Rocketman’ biopic!

Rumor has it my man, Tom Hardy, is interested in playing “the young Elton John” in a upcoming Elton bio-pic. Visually, it makes no sense to me, but if they can make Michael Douglas look like Liberace, then I guess anything is possible.

FilmDistrict is nearing a deal to acquire U.S. rights to Rocketman, the Michael Gracey-directed biographical musical film about Sir Elton John. The script is by Billy Elliot‘s Lee Hall, and Tom Hardy is circling to play the lead role. This film was the talk of Cannes, where it was shopped by UTA, which structured the financing.

The film follows John’s journey from 5-year old musical prodigy who by age 11 won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, to a young man who rebelled against his strict upbringing, wore outrageous costumes and became a global icon who teamed with songwriter Bernie Taupin to sell more records than just about any musical artist of his era. John’s musical catalog is part of the mix, so this is going to be a major film.

“Everyone knows and loves Elton John’s music, but the true story of his life is so incredible that it can only be described as a fantasy,” Gracey said, when I wrote about this project after I reported that he became the director. “His journey from impossible dreamer to stardom and uncontrollable excess is something only a musical film can capture, and I’m so excited to be the one to tell his story.”

They are searching to cast the child Elton John, and that search is being conducted by Jessica Ronane, whose credits include Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Billy Elliott The Musical and Matilda. The hope is that Hardy will take over that role in adulthood, with CAA repping him.

Okay – this sounds pretty amazing, actually. I would LOVE if this news were true – but I’m still torn on who should play Elton John. I don’t know if Tom can pull it off.  Do you think he could?

Elton John, 65, is a dad again!

Sir Elton John‘s is a dad again! The musician, 65, and husband David Furnish are the proud parents of a brand-new baby boy, Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John, they announced to Britain’s Hello! magazine on Tuesday Jan. 15. The baby was born via surrogate in Los Angeles last Friday Jan. 11, Elijah was born a healthy 8lb 4oz.

The rock ‘n roll tyke joins big brother Zachary, whose December 2010 birth was first revealed exclusively by Us Weekly. “Both of us have longed to have children, but the reality that we now have two sons is almost unbelievable,” John and Furnish, 50, tell HELLO! “The birth of our second son completes our family in a most precious and perfect way. It is difficult to fully express how we are feeling at this time; we are just overwhelmed with happiness and excitement.”

After 12 years together, the “I’m Still Standing” singer wed Furnish in 2005, and have longed to get a sibling for their firstborn. “I think it’s difficult to be an only child, and to be an only child of someone famous,” John said. “I want Zachary to have a sibling.”

“For many years we have talked about fulfilling one of our greatest wishes by becoming parents,” John told Us shortly after Zachary’s Christmas Day 2010 birth, also via surrogate. “And now this wish has been granted to us, we feel so blessed and lucky.”

65!? Can you imagine? I had my boys at 23 & 25, and I can’t imagine doing it later. Okay, maybe my thirties, but my SIXTIES?? Forgetaboutit! He’s almost as old as my grandpa!

We all know Elton has a little spring in his step. Check out the picture after the jump (NSFW). (more…)

Without further ado, Elton John’s ass!

I probably should have put that behind the cut for those of you sitting at work, but I had such a good laugh – I decided not to. You’re welcome.

Elton John decided to moon Michael Cain yesterday, when their yachts passed each other in Saint Tropez, France. His partner David Furnish and his other friends laughed and pointed at the mooning singer as the fans and photographers captured the moment.

Stars….they’re just like us.
