Elton John Said “Thank You…” In The Form Of A Surprise Free Concert

Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 11.20.34 AM

Elton John just wanted to say hi and thank you…with beautiful MUSIC, y’all.

Elton played for about 70 minutes to a crowd of a couple thousand onlookers  in what used to be the city’s Tower Records store, in gratitude for the city annually hosting his Academy Awards viewing party that raises money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The thing was announced the night before to avoid overcrowding, though the place was packed by noon, when the thing was set to start.

Announced by West Hollywood Mayor Lindsey Horvath, John and his five-member band performed on a full stage erected in what once was the Tower Records parking lot. “I could have probably bought Los Angeles for the money I spent in Tower Records,” he said with a broad smile from his bench at a Yamaha concert grand piano.

John played hits including “Bennie and the Jets,” “Rocket Man,” “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” which he performed in duet with the show’s only guest, Lady Gaga. He also played new stuff from his new album, “Wonderful Crazy Night,” including the title track, the ballad “A Good Heart” and a love song, “Blue Wonderful.”

According to the LA times, spokesman for the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department said the event “went smoothly. There were no problems.”

A little Elton before Oscar? Not too shabby.

Elton John & David Furnish Marry

FIZZ Grand Opening & Elton John's Birthday In Las Vegas

Congrats, you crazy lovebirds!

Yes, Sir Elton John and partner David Furnish have formally converted their civil partnership into a marriage! Time to bust out that Lion King soundtrack (fine, if you’re more crocodile rock, that’s cool, too).

The couple hosted a ceremony at their Windsor estate in Berkshire commemorating the day, attended by the likes of David and Victoria Beckham, Ed Sheeran and more. But most

Mr Furnish and Sir Elton, who have two sons, became civil partners in 2005, with a civil partnership ceremony at the Windsor Guildhall.  In March, however, England allowed for same-sex marriage and with pride, Elton and David decided to make their union official-official!

Sir. Elton John commended his country for its progress:

“Having our civil partnership was an incredible breakthrough for people that have campaigned for a long time – through the 60s and the 50s in England when it was so hard to be gay and hard to be open about it. And it was a criminal act.

“So for this legislation to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn’t just say, ‘Oh, well we have a civil partnership. We’re not going to bother to get married’. We will get married.”

Good going, Great Britain!

“No more shows, no more music, no more songs.” While he says he wants to retire and spend more time with his family, there’s no word on whether or not he’ll actually cancel upcoming shows, or if it will come at the end of his tour.

Elton John is Getting Married!

FIZZ Grand Opening & Elton John's Birthday In Las Vegas

It’s official, Elton John and David Furnish, are getting married this May.  The two have been in a British Civil Partnership for over eight years, but will officially wed in England, now that same-sex marriage has been legalized in Britain.  John told the Las Vegas Review Journal,

“We don’t feel the need to take an extra step legally,” he said. “But since we’re committed for life, we feel it’s really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation. We all live by example.”

Furnish spoke with Attitude about their upcoming marriage,

“Elton and I will marry – as a high-profile couple, we feel it is our duty to do it, to make sure that everyone knows that this is something that many gay men living in this country never dreamed would happen.”

The couple has been together since 1993 and have two children together. Although their celebration of civil partnership was celebrated with a $2 million reception that included 650 guests, the approaching wedding will be a bit smaller. “I think what we’ll do is go to a registry office in England in May” Furnish said, “[We’ll] take the boys with us, and a couple of witnesses.”

Good for them.  They clearly have already taken this official step mentally and emotionally – but of course they need to celebrate the legality of it.  And not that it is their duty to set an example- but being so high-profile – why not?  Congrats to the happy couple and their family!
