TV therapist Dr. Phil McGraw has slammed the tabloid media as hypocritical for accusing him of trying to profit off Britney Spears’ breakdown by visiting the troubled singer in hospital. MCGraw went to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Saturday, where Spears was being held following a stand-off with police when she refused to hand over her boys to ex-husband Kevin Federline after a scheduled visit at her Beverly Hills mansion.
McGraw then announced he planned to devote the Tuesday episode of his show Dr. Phil to Spears’ ongoing problems - prompting some to claim he was profitting off the Toxic star’s troubles. But MCGraw, who claims Spears’ mother Lynne asked him to visit her daughter and who on Monday announced his decision to cancel the proposed Spears special “out of consideration” to her family, has now hit out at the media for sending an army of photographers to follow the singer everyday.
He says, “They (the tabloids) are waiting for her next meltdown. These are the people that are stalking her and they want to criticise me for trying to help her, for trying to bring help to her in cooperation with the family that loves her. Get real. “Somebody needs to step up and get this young woman in to some quality care - and I do not apologise one whit, not one second, for trying to make that happen.”

TMZ has the latest:
Bending to public pressure over his Britney Spears intervention show, Dr. Phil has canceled the program scheduled for tomorrow.
In a statement on his site, the good doc says, “As was widely reported this weekend, at the request of concerned family members, I visited Britney Spears in the hospital. The details of that visit will, of course, remain private. We had planned to tape a Dr. Phil Now show today, focusing not on the tabloid side of Britney’s latest problems, but instead on the very serious issues surrounding this case.”
The statement goes on, “Clearly, it is not just Britney’s family struggling to find a way to protect adult children who cannot be ordered or compelled to seek help. Because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with the taping at this particular time. Britney and her family are in our prayers, and we ask that they be in yours.”

Dr. Phil says Lynne Spears initially called and asked him to intervene before Britney was released from L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Saturday.
“I want to set the record straight. I went to see Britney at the request of her family. I talked to Lynne, [father] Jamie and [brother] Brian because they were frustrated that she wasn’t going to be held for a longer time,” he said on CBS’ The Early Show this morning.
Dr. Phil — who will devote a show to the singer this week — said he got looped in after Britney was initially rushed to the hospital.
“Thursday night, the phone rang, it was Lynne. Clearly she was very upset, as any parent would be,” he said. “I was first contacted by her family a year ago and had maintained a running dialogue for the last year or so.”

Shouldn’t this be confidential? Is nothing sacred anymore?!
After spending an hour with Britney Spears this morning, Dr. Phil has made his diagnosis.
“My meeting with Britney and some family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention,” he said in a statement to Entertainment Tonight and The Insider.
“She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room,” the doctor adds. “We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her.”
After going on a short drive earlier today, Spears is back at her Beverly Hills home.
Dr. Phil will share more details from his chat with the “Gimme More” singer on his daytime show next week.
