Breaking News: DJ AM’s Death Ruled an Accident

300_djam2_lc_082809.jpg

DJ AM’s death has been ruled an accident due to substance abuse, the New York Medical Examiner.

A spokesperson for the M.E. says the cause of death is “acute intoxication” due to the combined effects of cocaine, oxycodone (painkiller Oxycontin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Benadryl and Levamisole (a drug dealers cut cocaine with).

“Our investigation is completed,” spokesperson Ellen Borakove tells Us.

The Associated Press reported that DJ AM (real name: Adam Goldstein) had six Oxycontin pills in his stomach and one undigested in his throat when he was found dead in his New York City apartment at age 36 in August. A crack pipe was also discovered nearby.

DJ AM Remembered

DJ AM

The images above are from the program given to all the guests who attended the memorial service for Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein Thursday night at the Palladium nightclub in LA.

The service lasted almost three hours and included speeches from many of AM’s friends. “The one common theme that all the speakers shared was how selfless and generous Adam was and how much he valued his sobriety,” a guest at the service tells Life & Style.

Hayley Wood’s heartbreaking goodbye to DJ AM

Hayley Wood

Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein and Haley Wood may have been on-again, off-again before his sudden death on Aug. 28 – but the love the two shared was clear when she spoke at his emotional memorial service in Los Angeles Thursday.

“I have never experienced anything quite like Adam Goldstein. He made me feel warm and whole,” said Wood, who was one of a handful of people who spoke about the deejay during the service held at the Hollywood Palladium. “He smelled soft. Adam was a remarkable human being, and so many have been blessed by his presence.”

Recalling their time together, she said, “We talked of marriage and excitement of having children together. He would whisper in my ear sometimes before we went to sleep, ‘Goodnight, my sweet angel.’ Most mornings when I woke up, he’d make me toast and juice and say, ‘Good morning, soulmate.’ I will cherish the memories forever.”

During the ceremony, Goldstein’s empty deejay booth, along with his laptop, headphones and two pairs of sneakers, was set up in remembrance of the musical talent. The service opened with the reading of Alcoholics Anonymous’ 12 steps. Goldstein, 36, had been sober for more than a decade when he suffered an apparent relapse.

“Even though our time together was short, I would change nothing,” Wood added. “The love I continue to feel for him and the love that we shared together will live with me and those who witnessed us together forever. … I will never be the same without him. A part of me has passed away with him. Even the warmest of days will never compare to the warmth I felt when I touched him. He was my soulmate, and now he is my soul. He was my amazing grace.”

Wood opened her speech by reciting lyrics from “Amazing Grace.”

Also in attendance at the memorial were Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson, Eric Dane, Rebecca Gayheart and Goldstein’s former fiancée, Nicole Richie, who is due to have her second child this month.

Did DJ AM’s plane crash lead to his death?

Adam Goldstein

When DJ AM survived a fiery plane crash last September, he suffered severe second- and third-degree burns on his scalp and arms. But the accident left him with more than physical scars – the popular deejay struggled with the mental and emotional side effects until the end of his life.

A few weeks after the crash in 2008, DJ AM (real name: Adam Goldstein) told People, “I had a terrible nightmare … there was someone with an aerosol can trying to light me on fire. I woke up and I was like, ‘Oh my God. This is going to happen forever.’ ”

Goldstein sought therapy, but his survivor’s guilt and post-traumatic stress never went away, according to friends and colleagues. Indeed, they may have ultimately led the recovering drug addict – who was found dead Aug. 28 in his Manhattan apartment with illegal and prescription drugs – to a critical relapse.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that the injuries Adam suffered in the plane crash caused last Friday’s events,” Goldstein’s lawyer Matthew McNicholas said after the deejay’s death. “Without the plane crash, we’d still be enjoying his musical talents. He lived with the trauma everyday.”

Fear of Death and Burning
Signs that Goldstein was still battling the psychological impact of the plane crash were never far from the surface. The deejay, for instance, had difficulty working at Rain, a Las Vegas nightclub known for its pyrotechnic displays, where Goldstein had a regular Friday night gig.

“They rarely shoot off the flames [during his night] and when they do, it’s toned down,” says a club source. “He got really nervous when they shot off the fire because you could feel the heat.”

Three months after the accident, Goldstein filed a $20 million lawsuit against Learjet, the pilots’ estates and others for “pain and suffering, mental anguish, psychological and emotional distress, disfigurement and pre-impact fear of death and burning,” according to papers filed in court.

(A spokesperson for Learjet had no comment Tuesday regarding DJ AM’s death.)

Stress and Addiction
Goldstein’s cause of death has not been officially determined. But according to multiple sources, the celebrity deejay’s addiction spun out of control in his final days and led to his final crisis.

Could memories of the plane crash have contributed? Psychiatrist Dr. David Sack, an expert in drug and alcohol abuse, says that, in those already struggling with addiction, relapse can often be triggered by an earlier, unresolved trauma. “It significantly increases the risk of relapse,” he says.

Another common symptom of post-traumatic stress, says Sack, an addiction specialist and CEO of Promises Treatment Centers who did not know Goldstein personally, is increased trouble with sleeplessness – another potent trigger for drug relapse. “People who have insomnia are at least three times a greater risk for relapse than people who aren’t having insomnia,” says Sacks.

Not all of Goldstein’s friends recall a change in behavior in recent weeks. “I saw him two months ago and he was in a good state,” says a source. “Sober and just Adam – happy, lovely, nice. I’d heard that he has had a tough few months, but no one saw this coming.”

But another friend who remembers DJ AM fondly says there is little doubt that a combination of survivor’s guilt, anxiety and PTSD took its toll.

“His death was a direct result of the plane crash,” the friend tells People. “It was something he fought daily. If that crash hadn’t happened, he would be alive right now.”

Official: DJ AM Had Six OxyContin Pills in His Body

DJ AM had six prescription pills in his stomach and one in his throat when he was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his apartment, an official tells the Associated Press.

The pills appear to be powerful painkiller OxyContin, according to the unnamed official.

A preliminary autopsy on the 36 year old (real name: Adam Goldstein) came up as inconclusive, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Toxicology reports are still pending.

Goldstein was found face down on his bed inside his $2 million NYC apartment Sept. 28. A crack pipe and prescription pill bottles were also discovered near his shirtless body. There was no evidence of foul play.

Goldstein has openly discussed his battle with crack cocaine, Ecstasy, but said he was sober for 11 years. He was set to star in an Intervention-type MTV reality show called Gone Too Far this fall.

A memorial “in the format of a 12-step meeting” for Goldstein will be held at the Hollywood Palladium Thursday.
