Tom Cruise is reportedly launching a $80 million takeover bid of friend David Beckham’s new soccer club.
The Hollywood actor is a huge soccer fan and wants to give his financial backing to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
A source said: “To have Tom’s backing would be amazing – there’s no way Galaxy bosses would turn down that opportunity.”
Beckham signed for Galaxy this January on a reported £128 million five-year deal although he doesn’t start playing for them until next month.
Cruise watched Beckham at Real Madrid’s home ground the Bernabeu on Sunday to see the Spanish team win the league title.
He was joined in the stands by wife Katie Holmes and the sport ace’s wife Victoria and their three sons, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz.
After seeing Beckham’s team crowned as champions, the two couples celebrated into the early hours with a meal in an exclusive Madrid restaurant, followed by dancing at a local club.
They finally left for home at 7am the next morning.
She shouldn’t, some Brits say. They’re questioning a plan to knight the former pop star’s hubby — which would make him Sir David and his wife Lady Victoria.
At issue is not just whether the 32-year-old sports star has achieved enough in his life to enter knighthood — but also the fact that he’s moving to the U.S.
“Although Beckham’s name has been put forward, some believe it should not be approved at a time when he will be earning his main income and paying tax in the U.S. thanks to his £25 million (about $50 million), five-year deal with the L.A. Galaxy football club,” noted the London Evening Standard, which quoted one source as saying, “Some officials feel that there is nothing wrong with honoring a player who is based in Europe and free to represent his country if required, but feel there is a big difference if the same player is earning his main income and paying tax in the United States and unable to play for England.”
David Beckham has made a US TV appeal asking for nets.
For the man with access to the finest football goals in the world, at first glance it seems a bizarre request from the multi-million pound football star.
In fact, the 32-year-old is making an appeal for mosquito nets to help stop the spread of Malaria.
Appearing in the 30 second black and white clip, Becks is seen practising his free kicking skills directed at a football goal.
Becks was making his appeal on behalf of the charity www.malarianomore.org.
The disease remains the number one killer of children under five in sub-Saharan Africa, claiming more than 1 million lives a year. 350 to 500 million cases of malaria occur annually.
Another week, another hairdo for David Beckham. It seems he just couldn’t put up with his blonde locks any longer and shaved it all off in one dramatic session at the hairdressers.
Now just a dull blonde fuzz covers Beckham’s head. The international star revealed his new look at a Real Madrid training session and took ribbing from his fellow footballers with good grace.
The Spice Girls pals and a flock of A-list stars turned out to celebrate David’s 32nd birthday in London.
Looking like a pair of well-dressed blonde Troll dolls, the couple partied with the former girl band, Gordon Ramsay and David Walliams at Mayfair’s Cipriani restaurant.
Firmly clutching his wife’s hand, the suited birthday boy showed off a pair of made-to-measure brown brogue shoes, which he bought earlier in the day during a shopping trip in London’s Royal Arcade off Old Bond Street.
He also treated himself to a £4,500 suit and a £14,000 watch from Saville Row.
Meanwhile Posh looked stunning in a simple black mini dress and leopard spot heals, with her blonde chop pushed back with a matching black hair band.
While the couple may have hoped all the attention was on their new wardrobes, the focus of the night returned to rumours of a Spice Girl reunion.
For the second time in as many weeks, four of the five singers were celebrating in the same room.
Last night Geri, a pregnant Emma Bunton and new mum Mel B were all in tow.
