Colin Firth Never Owned His Role As Mr. Darcy In 'Pride And Prejudice'

In 1994, Colin Firth appeared in the Jane Austen movie adaptation of Pride And Prejudice. Even now, people still associate the actor with the role of Mr. Darcy. I loved him in that role and I loved him as Mr. Darcy in Bridget Jones Diary. Still, he says that he felt no ownership over the Mr. Darcy title.

Huffington Post reports:

“I’ve never owned it,” Firth told host Ricky Camilleri. “It was a job that ran from May to September. I walked off the set and that’s my only relationship with it.”

Seven years after his first Darcy incarnation, “Bridget Jones’ Diary” — based on Helen Fielding’s book of the same name — was a smash hit, further entrenching Firth into Darcy lore. A sequel, “Bridget Jones’ Diary: The Edge of Reason,” debuted in 2004.

“It was Helen Fielding who decided to do something very smart and it was a kind of a popular cultural reference point and make use of it,” Firth said. “I thought it would actually be quite a successful film and a way to have a bit of fun with something I’d already done. I’d never played out a bit of self-referential popular culture mischief before.”

Are you a fan of Colin Firth? If so, what’s your favorite role that he’s taken on?? I’m a huge fan and my favorite is between either of the Mr. Darcy roles or his role in The King’s Speech.

Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth at the premiere of ‘Gambit’ in London!

Here are some new photos from last night’s premiere of ‘Gambit’ in London. It’s a remake of a popular 1960’s film, and it stars Cameron Diaz, Colin Firth and Alan Rickman (oh and it’s written by the Coen brothers).

Cameron wore a dress by Stella McCartney, and while I think it isn’t a horrible dress, I do think the fit is weird. The top is beautiful, but something about how the top and the bottom comes together is strange to me.

I’ve seen trailer’s for this movie (I’ve included one below), and I’m not entirely sold. Probably because Cameron Diaz is in it. I’ll see it, because I love me some Colin Firth… but Cam? Not necessarily her biggest fan.

Check out the trailer below!

TRAILER TIME! ‘Gambit’ starring Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth!

We finally have our first look at the trailer for ‘Gambit’, the new movie by Joel and Ethan Coen. The comedy stars Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman and Stanley Tucci. It is a remake of the 1966 comedy of the same name, which starred Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine.

An art curator (Firth) decides to finally exact some sweet revenge on his abusive boss (Rickman) — who happens to be the richest man in the world — by tricking him into buying a fake Monet painting. He enlists the help of a Texas rodeo queen (Diaz), but his plan goes awry when his conspirator begins to fall for the man he is trying to swindle.

Firth spoke with Collider about working with the Coen brothers on “Gambit” and admitted that the dialogue was a bit tricky.

“Doing their dialogue is a challenge because they write, it’s a stylized and intricate series of monologues a lot of it,” Firth told Collider. “It was vigorous and it was a farce, and farce is [a] very, very difficult form to specialize in. Comedy, it can make you a little crazy actually.”

CBS Films picked up “Gambit” in March 2011, Deadline.com previously reported.

“I’ve been writing about this movie for going on a decade, with Lobell a tireless advocate for a picture that got close several times over the years,” Deadline.com’s Mike Fleming wrote last year. “Now, the movie seems charmed, with Firth coming off ‘The King’s Speech’ and his Academy Award for Best Actor. Diaz just starred in ‘Bad Teacher.’ The picture was funded by Crime Scene. Financing was arranged by CAA, which brokered the domestic distribution deal.”

“Gambit” is finally set to hit theaters in the UK on Nov. 13.

I think it actually looks really good! I love me some Colin Firth!!

‘Bridget Jones 3’ CONFIRMED!

I don’t know if I think this is good – or bad news. I absolutely adored the first Bridget Jones – but the second one was a nightmare – ala ‘Sex and the City 2’.

Then I read this tidbit from EW – and I’m thinking a third movie is BAD news.

It’s finally time to re-open the diary: Bridget Jones is returning to the big screen.

EW has confirmed exclusively that Working Title Films, the production company responsible for the first movie released in 2001 and the second one dubbed The Edge of Reason in 2004, is moving ahead with a third installment. Based at Universal, Working Title has been mulling a sequel since 2009.

No other details were available, but last year, Bridget costar Colin Firth, who plays lovable Mark Darcy, told EW’s Dave Karger some details about a possible plot. “I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can’t have children, I think that’s the way it goes on,” Firth told Karger, who was reporting for Access Hollywood. “So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver [Hugh Grant’s character] for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she’s left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her?”

The movies are based on Helen Fielding’s novel of the same name and starred Renee Zellweger as Bridget. The first film was an international hit, taking in a reported $281 million. The second was crucified by the critics but still raked in $262 million worldwide.

Earlier this year, the London Evening Standard reported that Fielding had begun writing the third installment of the best-selling books. At the time, she said there had been discussions about the next film. “I will be working on both the book and the film but I don’t know if they are the same thing yet. It’s not been decided.”

She can’t get pregnant – so she goes back to Hugh’s character just to get pregnant? I hate it! Bleh! Lets not and say we did – okay? We know Renee will be back – she’s got nothing better going on. Come to think of it – neither does Hugh Grant. I hope Oscar winner Colin Firth stays away from this stinker… you can do better Colin!

What do you think? Is a third Bridget Jones good or bad news?
