Coldplay regains control of the U.K. album chart

Coldplay

Coldplay have returned to the top of the U.K. charts after toppling Basshunter’s Now You’re Gone – The Album.

Viva La Vida has spent much of the summer at the top of the album chart, and now the release has added a sixth week at number one after outselling the album which ended the group’s reign.

Meanwhile, London rapper Dizzee Rascal has scored a fourth week at the top of the U.K. singles chart with Dance Wiv Me, holding off competition from Kid Rock’s All Summer Long, which has jumped up the new countdown to two.

Coldplay tickets withdrawn in Scotland

Coldplay

Coldplay have withdrawn tickets for a forthcoming gig in Scotland – because they were printed on the wrong paper.

Fans who purchased seats for the band’s concert at Glasgow’s SECC arena in December through sales company Ticketmaster have been told to return the paper stubs as soon as possible because of an administration error.

The promotion company in charge of the gig, DF Concerts, has issued an apology over the mix-up.

A spokesman for the firm says, “Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster for the Coldplay gigs at the SECC have been printed on incorrect stock, but we are confident that Ticketmaster will be able to replace all tickets for their customers in advance of the gigs in December. However, it will be more difficult to replace tickets originally purchased through Ticketmaster and then sold on through the secondary ticket market.

“In this case, ticket holders should contact their point of purchase. We urge these secondary sources to look after their customers at this time.”

Coldplay are currently touring America and Canada but will return to their native U.K. later this year for 14 gigs in the run-up to Christmas.

Coldplay’s album sells 300k in three days

Chris Martin

Coldplay raced to a No. 1 debut on the new U.K. album chart June 15th with “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends”, even though the album was only released on Thursday, halfway through the sales week.

“Viva La Vida” sold 302,000 units through Saturday night, according to data from the Official U.K. Chart Company, making it the band’s fastest-selling release. The total compares to the 465,000 sold by 2005′s “X&Y” in a full sales week, and 274,000 for 2002′s “A Rush of Blood to the Head.”

Chris Martin walked out his interview after being questioned about his new album

Chris Martin

Chris Martin has walked out of an interview with BBC Radio 4 in discomfort at being questioned about Coldplay’s new album.

The frontman was being interviewed for the station’s art programme Front Row when he asked to leave the studio after nine minutes of discussion.

Will Champion, the four-piece’s drummer, was left alone in the studio to answer the questions of interviewer John Wilson until his bandmate returned to stammer an answer to the final question.

The band’s fourth album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends was released on Thursday June 12th and is expected to shatter sales records for the year, with HMV estimating more than 250,000 copies will be sold in its first three days on release.

However, Martin appeared uncomfortable with being interviewed about the album and its lyrical content.

“I wouldn’t agree with you there at all, no,” said Martin after Wilson questioned whether the album’s title reflected an obsession with death.

“I’d say you’re journalistically twisting me into saying something I don’t really mean,” he added.

And when Wilson asked if the band started with the song Viva La Vida and “the idea within that song of the deposed dictator looking back at his life”, Martin replied: “I’m not enjoying this. Can I have two minutes?”

When asked if he was feeling the pressure, he explained: “I just don’t like talking about things.”

Judging by the album’s sale figures, Martin can afford to let his music do the talking after it sold more than 100,000 copies on its first day on release.

According to HMV, the speed with which Viva La Vida is flying off the shelves means it has the potential to become the second fastest-selling album in UK chart history behind Oasis’ ‘Be Here Now’, which sold 695,761 copies in its first week when it came out in August 1997.

“This rate of sales exceeds even our optimistic forecasts, and shows how massively popular a band Coldplay remain despite having been away for the best part of three years,” said HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo.

“Aside from having a substantial core fanbase, Coldplay are one of the few acts that can genuinely connect with a much wider audience.”

Chris Martin injures his knee right before his comeback tour

Chris Martin

Chris Martin has thrown Coldplay’s comeback concert into jeopardy after twisting his knee during tour rehearsals.

The frontman was left hobbling in pain after injuring his leg in practice sessions for the band’s eagerly anticipated first performance in London on Monday.

And it is feared the injury will further postpone the group’s forthcoming world tour, which has already been pushed back due to unspecified “production delays”.

A source tells British newspaper The Sun, “Chris has been in absolute agony with his knee.
“He’s had to strap it and has been hobbling around the place. He doesn’t want to cancel the show so is going to fight through the pain barrier.”

Earlier this month, it was announced the rockers’ North American trek would be delayed by two weeks. The tour was scheduled to kick off on June 29th, but will now start in Los Angeles on July 14th.

Any Coldplay fans out there?

coldplay_3.jpg

Coldplay has been one of my favorite bands since they released Parachutes back in 1999.  They put WAY too much time between their albums (if you ask me) so I was glad to hear they’re back in the studio working on another ablum!

Coldplay have revealed the first details of their new album including a number of songs up for consideration for the final track listing.

Writing on their official blog the band announced that they had just returned to the studio after a month off. They wrote: “The plan has always been to make a short record. No more than 42 minutes. 9 songs (give or take).”

The songs which might make it to the final cut include ‘Lost!’, ‘Cemeteries Of London’, ‘Violet Hill’. ‘Poppy Fields’, ‘42’, ‘Yes!’, Leftrightleftrightleft’ and ‘Rainy Day’. The blog also stated that fans can expect two songs that won’t feature on the album to be released “independently” as well.

Also: Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin said the album will feature what he called a quintessential song that everybody should hear “before we die.”

“In order for us to get excited about a new album, we have to have one song that we feel like everybody has to hear … before we die, otherwise we’ll be terribly depressed,” Martin said. “So luckily with this new record we’re going to make, we have that one song.”

“I can’t tell you about it, but it’s basically genius,” he joked.
