Christina Applegate stars as “Samantha Who,” a bad girl who gets a second chance at life when she is hit by a car and winds up with retrograde amnesia. But that isn’t what the actress feels is the key to the series’ success. She feels that people — herself included — enjoy the series for its journey of self discovery as Sam, who she describes as “awesome,” tries to find out who she is.

“I smile a lot more now that I am doing this show because I feel I am on a show that is good. I am on a show that I can be a fan of,” the former “Married … with Children star” said in an interview.

That interview took place shortly before Christina was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer, from which her reps say she “will have a full recovery.”

In addition to making Christina smile, “Samantha Who” has earned her an Emmy nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, so look for her on Sunday, Sept. 21 when the “60th Primetime Emmy Awards” take place — and ET will be first on the red carpet!

After announcing earlier this month she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer, Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate is receiving words of support and encouragement from fellow TV star Suzanne Somers, herself a breast cancer survivor.

Somers, 61, who announced in 2001 that she was battling the disease, has written an open letter to Applegate, 36, and which has been made exclusively available to People:

Dear Christina,

Cancer is scary, and lonely. You can’t ask anyone to make decisions for you because it’s just too heavy. There is a lot of ‘rush to treatment,’ when what you really need is time to research and think about how you want to approach this. Take your time Christina, there is no rush. Take your time and think it through. Use your cancer to learn and grow and as a force to work for you. You might choose to take an alternative approach. There are more options than the ones presented to you in the oncologist’s office. You will make it. The success and drive you have had in your career will be the same strengths you will use to win over this nasty disease. And I am here if you want to talk to someone who was ‘there.’

Christina Applegate isn’t going down without a fight. The 36-year-old Samantha Who star is going about her daily routine, including taping episodes of her ABC show, despite revealing on Aug. 3 that she has breast cancer.

“She’s like this tiny little thing,” co-star Melissa McCarthy tells OK!. “But she’s bionically strong.”

Even before the startling cancer revelation, the summer has been hard for Christina: her ex-boyfriend Lee Grivas died of a drug overdose on July 3 at only 26 years old.

Personal tragedies aside, it seems Christina is ready to battle her disease and is on target for a speedy recovery. “It was detected early on,” a close friend reports to OK! “It’s not life threatening, and she remains very positive throughout this, surrounded by her family and friends.” Christina’s mother, Nancy Lee Priddy, also survived breast cancer.

Sources confirm to ET that 36-year-old “Samantha Who” star Christina Applegate has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

A rep for the actress tells ET, “Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor-ordered MRI, the cancer is not life threatening. Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery. No further statement will be issued at this time.”

The star rose to fame as a teenager on “Married with Children.”

Christina Applegate has paid an emotional tribute to her former lover who was found dead in his Hollywood apartment on Tuesday.

The body of skateboarder Lee Grivas, 26, was discovered by a neighbor.

Applegate, who dated the aspiring photographer on and off for 18 months, paid her respects to her former beau and expressed her condolences to his family.

In a statement to E! News, Applegate says, “I am profoundly saddened. Lee was an incredible human being who was an extremely important and beautiful part of my life. He is missed beyond words. He touched so many and I feel much sadness for his mother, brother and all of his family and friends.”

An investigation into Grivas’ death has been launched by the Los Angeles Police Department. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending, but initial reports suggest Grivas died from a drugs overdose.

Christina Applegate’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Lee Grivas was found dead in his Hollywood apartment Tuesday, TMZ.com reports.

“I am profoundly saddened,” Applegate said in a statement to Usmagazine.com. “Lee was an incredible human being who was an extremely important and beautiful part of my life.

Christina Applegate has reunited with her skateboarder ex Lee Grivas,
and moved him back in to her Hollywood home, according to reports.

The pair briefly dated after 36-year-old Applegate’s marriage to Johnathon
Schaech ended in 2006, but they split soon after.

But they were photographed leaving a Los Angeles restaurant together last
week, and now insiders claim the romance is back on.

A friend says, “Lee’s a simple guy and he took good care of Christina the
first time around. And he’d love to make a baby with her – which is Christina’s
number one priority right now.”

Applegate recently revealed her desire to become a mother: “That’s
(motherhood) something I really need to get on soon, which is difficult in the
current situation. I feel complete when I’m with babies and kids… If I end up
doing it on my own, I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
