Lance Bass: Christina Applegate will save lives

Christina Applegate

Breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate will save the lives of thousands of women inspired by her story, insists her longtime friend Lance Bass.

The former ‘N Sync star maintains Applegate is “doing great” and “totally, fully recovering” after undergoing a double mastectomy following her diagnosis with the deadly disease last month.

And Bass, 29, is adamant the Samantha Who? star’s battle will in turn encourage scores of women to undergo early testing for the illness.

He tells People.com, “Now she has a voice and she can use it for something good. Just opening her mouth about it is going to make thousands of women go get checked out. It will probably save many lives.”

Applegate has announced plans to launch a campaign to raise money for MRI scans for women at risk of contracting breast cancer.

Christina Applegate has double mastectomy!

wenn1485627.jpg

Christina Applegate is taking the long view of her battle with breast cancer — the really long view.

Speaking on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” in her first interview since announcing her diagnosis earlier this month, the “Samantha Who?” star said she had a double mastectomy three weeks ago. She’ll undergo reconstructive surgery over the next eight months.

“I’m going to have cute boobs ’til I’m 90, so there’s that,” she joked in the interview, which aired Tuesday. “I’ll have the best boobs in the nursing home. I’ll be the envy of all the ladies around the bridge table.”

The 36-year-old actress elected to remove both breasts even though the disease was contained in one breast. She said she is now cancer-free.

Applegate called the operation a logical decision. Her mother battled breast cancer, and she tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation linked to breast and ovarian cancer.

“I just wanted to kind of be rid of it,” she said. “So this was the choice I made and it was a tough one.”

The experience has been an emotional roller coaster, she said.

“Sometimes, you know, I cry and sometimes I scream and I get really angry and I get really like, you know, into wallowing in self-pity sometimes,” she said. “And I think that’s — it’s all part of healing, and anyone who’s going through it out there, it’s OK to cry. It’s OK to fall on the ground and just scream if you want to.”

The Emmy-nominated “Samantha Who?” star has kept her sense of humor intact.

“I’ve laughed so much in the last three weeks,” she said. “I love living, and I really love my life, and I knew that from this moment on it was only going to be good that was going to be coming. Yeah, I’ll face challenges, but you can’t get any darker than where I’ve been. So knowing that in my soul gave me the strength to just say, ‘I have to get out there and make this a positive.’ ”

Applegate’s cancer was detected early through a doctor-ordered MRI. She said she’s starting a program to help women at high risk for breast cancer to meet the costs of an MRI, which is not always covered by insurance.

The news of breast cancer initially shook her up, she said.

“I was so mad,” she told “GMA.” “I was just shaking and — and then also immediately, I had to go into … ‘take-care-of-business-mode,’ which was … I asked them, ‘What do I do now? What — what is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?’ ”

The actress said she quickly made appointments, and also changed her diet to one consisting of fish, grains, beans and vegetables, avoiding processed foods.

Applegate is scheduled to appear on a one-hour TV special, “Stand Up to Cancer,” to be aired on ABC, CBS and NBC on September 5 to raise funds for cancer research.

Christina Applegate is free of breast cancer!

Christina Applegate

Just a month after being diagnosed with breast cancer, actress Christina Applegate is perfectly healthy and cancer-free, she told Robin Roberts of “Good Morning America” in an exclusive interview that will air Tuesday.

“I’m clear,” the star of “Samantha Who?” said. “Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. … They got everything out so I’m definitely not going to die from breast cancer.”

Applegate, who started getting mammograms six years ago after she turned 30, said the cancer was found through the second of two MRI tests as a follow-up from a biopsy she had last year.

During the interview she laughs about her reaction to the initial diagnosis, but perhaps only to offset the fear she felt then.

“I was so mad and I — I just remember I was — I was just shaking,” she says.

Christina Applegate says Samantha Who makes her happy

Christina Applegate

Christina Applegate stars as “Samantha Who,” a bad girl who gets a second chance at life when she is hit by a car and winds up with retrograde amnesia. But that isn’t what the actress feels is the key to the series’ success. She feels that people — herself included — enjoy the series for its journey of self discovery as Sam, who she describes as “awesome,” tries to find out who she is.

“I smile a lot more now that I am doing this show because I feel I am on a show that is good. I am on a show that I can be a fan of,” the former “Married … with Children star” said in an interview.

That interview took place shortly before Christina was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer, from which her reps say she “will have a full recovery.”

In addition to making Christina smile, “Samantha Who” has earned her an Emmy nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, so look for her on Sunday, Sept. 21 when the “60th Primetime Emmy Awards” take place — and ET will be first on the red carpet!
