The cast of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ was in Paris, France during Friday’s horrific shooting in Aurora, Colorado. The cast was set to walk the red carpet Friday night at the Paris premiere, but due to the shootings the premiere was canceled.
We were all horrified with Friday’s early-morning shooting, and the same goes for the cast.
Director Christopher Nolan released a statement: “Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community,” Nolan says. “I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime.”
“The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me,” Nolan adds, referring to alleged shooter James Holmes, whose attack resulted in 12 deaths and more than 38 injuries. “Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.”
Anne Hathaway also released a statement: “”My heart aches and breaks for the lives taken and altered by this unfathomably senseless act. I am at a loss for words how to express my sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.”
And finally, Christian Bale’s statement: ”Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.”
In the wake of the shooting, TDKR earned $160 million this weekend. That broke all records for 2D premieres, which surprises me. I thought the shooting would have had a much-bigger effect on the premiere. With that said – I’m glad the shooting DIDN’T deter people from seeing the film. I went and saw it Friday night, which was a bit eerie. Several witness recounted which scene was playing when the shooter walked into the theater and opened fire. During that particular scene, I did feel very weird…. and very sad. I can’t imagine.
While I was sitting there watching the movie, twice security guards walked back and checked to make sure the exits were locked. About half-way through the movie, a K9 police officer AND DOG walked in the theater and just sort of stood there – panning the crowd. That was incredibly eerie, and left all of us a little jarred.
Now about the movie – how was it? I LOVED IT. There are so many things that I want to say, but so many of them are spoilers, so I’ll wait! I’ll just say Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Cane all did amazing. It was the perfect way to wrap up the trilogy, and there’s not much more I can say without ruining it for you! I was pleasantly surprised by Anne. I thought she actually did a really great job of playing Catwoman. Tom Hardy as Bane?? Oh man. So good.
If you didn’t see it this weekend, at least tell me you saw ‘Moonrise Kingdom’. Discuss below!
