They may be happily married with two kids, but Chris Martin says he is still trying to live up to Gwyneth Paltrow’s ex!

The Coldplay front man even told Rolling Stone magazine that her two-and-a-half-year relationship with Brad Pitt is what drives him to make his band ever more successful.

“You’ve got to be hungry,” he told the rock bible. “If your wife went out with Brad Pitt, you’d want to prove yourself, you know what I mean?”

Brad and Gwyn, 35, started dating in 1995 after they met on the set of the thriller Seven and got engaged in November 1996.

But although Brad, 44, had said it had been “love at first sight” the couple split in June 1997.

A lot has happened in the decade since they broke up — but for some reason Chris, 31, still can’t get his wife’s love affair with one of the world’s sexiest and most successful movie stars out of his head.

His latest effort to impress the mother of his children, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, is set for its US release on June 17th.

Justin Timberlake was the inspiration for Coldplay’s new album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, according to frontman Chris Martin.

The band’s drummer Will Champion is such a fan of Timberlake’s hit track Cry Me A River, he used it as inspiration for one of their’s tracks, Lost!

Martin says, “One song we’re always trying to chase is Cry Me A River in terms of the beats and everything. I know that is one of Will’s favourite songs. And he did all the drums on Lost!”

Chris Martin is amazed his band Coldplay have achieved international success – because he is convinced they’ve never produced anything “that good”.

The Speed of Sound hitmakers have released three albums to date – Parachutes in 2000, A Rush of Blood to the Head in 2002, and their last LP X+Y, which went to number one in countries including the U.K., U.S., Australia, France and Norway in 2005.

But despite the worldwide chart success, Martin still feels like an imposter in the music industry.

He says, “After the last record, I felt like, ‘God, I can’t believe we’ve got away with becoming this huge band.’
“We still haven’t done anything that good yet. So it was like, ‘We’ve got the job, now we’ve got to prove why we got it.’”

And he insists he is only reminded of his fame by his Hollywood star wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

He adds, “The only thing that makes me remember that we’re in a big band is when I remember that I’m married to someone famous.

“Everything else in the day is exactly the same as it was 11 years ago.”

Martin and Paltrow have two children together, daughter Apple, four, and two-year-old son Moses.

Gwyneth Paltrow is planning a lavish birthday for her daughter Apple when the tot turns four later this month.

The star is to spare no expense to give the youngster an extravagant “princess fairy theme”.

And Paltrow admits the youngster, her eldest child with husband Chris Martin, has made the unusual request of a Mexican pinata for the event.

But the papier-mache donkeys, which are often stuffed with sweets, are fairly rare outside the U.S.

She says, “We were travelling for (Apple’s two-year-old brother) Moses’ birthday, but it’s Apple’s in a couple of weeks when we are in London.

“She (Apple) wants a pinata, which, believe me, in England isn’t easy to find. And we have to get a bouncy castle and do it all in a princess fairy theme.”

Coldplay’s Chris Martin has spoken out in defense of the decision to choose Jay-Z as a Glastonbury headliner.

The singer told BBC Radio 1 that he could not understand why the rapper was causing such controversy.

Jay-Z’s scheduled appearance on the Pyramid Stage on June 28th has attracted much criticism, with some people even blaming him for slow ticket sales.

However, Martin, who along with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow was a guest at Jay-Z’s recent wedding to Beyonce, has stated that he thinks the performance will be exactly what the festival needs.

“We recently came back to England to find all this all this hoo-hah, grandpas complaining about things they don’t know about,” he continued.

“Coldplay not playing and Jay-Z playing is exactly what needs to happen for the world. He’s the best rapper in the world.”

He even went so far as to call the rapper, whose hits include 99 Problems, “the best musician on the planet”.

Chris’s wife Gwyneth has also spoken out in defence of her musician pal, saying that he will “knock it out of the park”.

Gwyneth Paltrow is now at home recovering from a recent health scare that landed her in the hospital.

Her spokesman is insisting that Gwyneth is “fine and now at home”, but refuses to comment on why she ended up there in the first place, citing “personal reasons”.

She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital and was slumped over in a wheelchair, pushed by husband Chris Martin.

Coldplay rocker Chris Martin tasted revenge recently when he met a former classmate who bullied him at school. The singer – married to Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow – insists he couldn’t resist the opportunity to show how successful he had become.

He says, “I bumped into a guy who used to give me hell at school. He was a bully who always said I wouldn’t make anything of myself. I had great pleasure asking what he was up to now. He wasn’t up to much. Then I turned around and said, ‘This is my wife Gwyneth.’ His face dropped and he looked really embarrassed.

“It was a proud moment. I’m not one to get my own back and look for revenge – but that was pretty sweet. I wasn’t the happiest at school. I was quite geeky. I was a bit of a swot and just wanted to do music.”
