Chris Brown Withdraws From Kids’ Choice Awards

nickelodeon2008kidschoiceawardsarrivalsrurnwuwvhmrl.jpg

Chris Brown is officially letting Nickelodeon off the hook, and taking himself off the list of nominees at the upcoming Kids’ Choice Awards.

In a statement, his rep says: “Chris very much appreciates the support of his fans and the honor they have paid him in the way of nominations for Favorite Male Singer and Favorite Song.

Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music to whether he should be allowed to be among those nominated.

While Chris would like to speak to his fans directly about this and other issues, pending legal proceedings preclude his doing so at this time. Once the matter before him has been resolved, he intends to do so.”

Are Chris Brown and Rihanna going to perform a duet together?

candids18_rihanna-chrisbrown.jpg

US Magazine has new details on Chris Brown’s duet with Rihanna. On Tuesday, it was reported that Brown, 19, is back in a Santa Monica, Calif., studio with Rihanna, 21, working on an as-yet-untitled duet with producer Polow Da Don. “The theme is about being stronger and growing stronger in a relationship,” a source tells Us. “The song was originally created for Rihanna before the fight. However, it wasn’t initially slated for Chris to be on the song.” Adds the insider, “The funny thing is, the song expresses the emotions that both Chris and Rihanna are feeling at this moment – facing challenges and overcoming the ups and downs of a relationship in which you become stronger.” The source adds that Brown and Rihanna “were very playful in the studio.”

In a statement, Polow Da Don (who has worked with the Pussycat Dolls and Usher) tells Us: “My heart goes out to both Chris and Rihanna for what has happened in the past. They are both great artists to work with, and I wish them well.”

Brown allegedly attacked Rihanna Feb 8 in Los Angeles. He later turned himself in to Los Angeles Police and was released on $50,000 bail. On March 5, he was charged with two felonies – assault by means likely to create great bodily injury and criminal threats. He is to be arraigned April 6. If convicted, he faces anywhere from probation to four years and eight months in state prison.

Nickelodeon: Chris Brown to Remain Kids’ Choice Nominee

chris-brown-court-091.jpg

Nickelodeon is standing by troubled singer Chris Brown, who has been charged with two felonies in the alleged beating of girlfriend Rihanna.

In a statement to Usmagazine.com, the network said Brown, 19, will remain a Kids’ Choice Award nominee for favorite male singer and favorite song for “Kiss Kiss.” (He will be competing against Rihanna in the latter category.)

An online petition asking Nickelodeon to remove Brown and Rihanna as nominees had 2,166 signatures Tuesday.

But a network rep tells Us: “Like all our KCA nominees, Chris Brown was nominated by kids several months ago based on his work as a performer, and the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category.”

The same day Brown was charged with two felonies, he apparently posted a MySpace blog asking fans to vote for him in the Kids’ Choice content.

The awards are set for March 28.

Chris Brown trying to buy Rihanna’s affection?

chris-brown-rihanna-laughing-together.jpg

There were more than just words to the Chris Brown-Rihanna reunion in Miami.

Radar has learned exclusively that Brown shelled out $50,000+ for a diamond ring at Van Cleef & Arpels in Bal Harbour, Florida last week.

While Brown had not admitted guilt in the alleged beating of Rihanna last month, their meeting at P. Diddy’s house in Miami raised eyebrows and even caused Oprah to warn Rihanna.

While the couple stayed out of sight, it was discovered that Brown gifted her with the massive sparkler before they both headed back to Los Angeles.

Update: Chris Brown & Rihanna

chris-brown-court-0811.jpg

From TMZ:

Sources tell TMZ Chris Brown would cop a plea, but only to a misdemeanor and with no jail time. After we broke the story yesterday AM it has triggered a passionate public reaction.

We’re told Brown’s people have consulted with outside legal eagles — including law school professors — who have said Rihanna’s own aggressiveness takes it out of the felony category. Sources say Rihanna was the first one to strike — slapping and striking Brown “numerous times” while he was driving, after seeing the text message from another woman. And Rihanna was fighting Brown as he punched and hurt her. We’re told much of this is reflected in the official police report based on what Rihanna told cops. As a result, they say, this is not a case that demands a felony plea.

On the other side, there are plenty of cases in which the woman engages the man in a fight but the jury convicts the male because it was an unfair fight and the man could have walked away. The photographs of Rihanna — the most graphic of which have not been seen by the public — demonstrate Brown’s superior strength. Add to that the fact that Brown had no significant injuries and it presents problems for him.

Perhaps worse for Brown, sources tell TMZ Rihanna told cops he had beaten her before and the violence had been escalating.

And there’s this. According to the detective’s note filed with the search warrant papers, Brown sent a text message to Rihanna’s assistant in which he apologized for what he had done to Rihanna and said he was getting help. That would be admissible in court and extremely damaging — as a legal admission.

Chris Brown’s Arraignment Postponed Until April 6

chris-brown-court-02.jpg

Shortly after Chris Brown arrived at the courthouse for his arraignment — after being charged with two felonies in connection to his Feb. 8 altercation with Rihanna -- on Thursday, further proceedings were postponed until April 6.

The singer — wearing a gray suit with a light gray tie and matching vest — stepped out of a black SUV Escalade 3:30 p.m. PST before entering the building. His mother and brother also arrived together.

During the short session at the L.A. Superior Court, Brown did not enter a plea to the two felony charges against him. He instead signed a waiver that showed he understood that his attorney, Mark Geragos, would be appearing for him when the arraignment continues in four weeks.

Donald Etra was representing Rihanna, who did not appear at the arraignment, and he said that she asked him to attend on her behalf.

“The victim is entitled to be represented at all proceedings,” he said.

The court commissioner, Kristi Loustau, offered a “Level 1″ protective order for Rihanna, which is the lowest level of a stay-away order for the victim.

“You are not to annoy, harass, molest or use any form of violence against anyone,” Loustau told Brown during the session.

Although Etra said that Rihanna requested no form of a restraining order against Brown, he added: “This is more than efficient to protect her in this case.”

Brown, who was visibly somber during the arraignment, only said a few words, including “Yes, your honor.”

After the arraignment, Etra said that Rihanna “wanted to convey her appreciation to the friends, followers and family” that have supported her. When asked about the couple’s reconciliation, Etra said that “this is not the time to discuss that.”

Geragos and the district attorney’s office did not comment.

Brown is facing assault by means likely to create great bodily injury and criminal threats. He has been free on $50,000 bail since his arrest. If convicted, he faces four years and eight months in state prison.

Stan Goldman, a professor of law at Loyola University said that Brown looked “slightly dazed.”

Although Geragos asked his former professor to attend, Goldman said that he is not speaking for the attorney.

“[There is] nothing I would correct him on if I was his counsel,” he said of Brown’s presence at the proceedings.

He also said that because Rihanna did not request a stay-away order, “it does suggest she doesn’t want him to stay away.” He said that if she refuses to testify, the case will likely not go to trial.
