Erin and I were talking about The Hills recently, and she says “that show drives me nuts!” This of course was a total shock to me – we’ve always loved The Hills!  Someone had pointed out to her that the show is basically about nothing… She says that all they do is talk about nothing.  They go in circles – talk about what’s going to happen – or talk about what’s already happened. Of course once this has been pointed out to her – it’s all she can pay attention to anymore.

She says “nothing new ever happens on The Hills.”  Of course she’s right, but I’ll still watch it.  Erin and Charlize have something in common. 

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron has seen The Hills and she doesn’t understand why it’s so popular.

“I realized that this f—ing show is huge,” Theron told MTV News Monday while promoting Battle in Seattle. “Now I’m going to ask you a question: Why?

“Why is it so big?” she asked. “It’s about nothing! This is a free country. Freedom of speech! You can tell me right now to my face that Reindeer Games was a piece of sh–. That’s totally fine.

“But The Hills is about nothing,” she continued. “I think the girls are beautiful and when they cry their mascara runs and that’s real, but I don’t get it! [Pause.] I am a nana. I’ll just take it. I am a nana. Maybe I need to watch the shows some more.”

Theron, 33, said she watched a couple of episodes in different languages because she was on a world tour.

In March, Theron was bewildered when asked by MTV about The Hills.

“I do not know what The Hills are,” she responded at the time. “Oh, now you’re going to make me look like the old fart. God, you’re a mother—-er! Unbelievable! You’re supposed to make me look like the cool movie star! Come on! Get with it! What is The Hills?”

Charlize Theron says it was great to be directed by boyfriend Stuart Townsend in their new film Battle in Seattle – except when it wasn’t.

“No matter what I say, people think I am biased because I sleep with him,” Theron joked with reporters in New York City Sept. 17. “It was great. He loved directing and I’ve never seen him so happy – which hurts my feelings as his girlfriend!”

Townsend, 35, Theron’s boyfriend of seven years, makes his writing and directorial debut with the drama about the 1999 World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle and protesters who brought the city’s streets to a standstill.

Theron, 33, says Townsend spent five years writing and preparing for his labor of love. “We would go on vacation to Fiji,” she says, “and I would be like, ‘Romance time!’ But he would have a pile of research and I would be like, ‘Oh my God, this is so not sexy!’ But that passion paid off.”

For the Irish actor turned director, working with his real-life leading lady was fun, and occasionally embarrassing. “She called me by my pet name a couple of times,” Townsend says. “The crew then started to call me by my pet name and I said to them, ‘That’s not cool. I’m trying to be a serious director here.’”

And what exactly is that pet name? “I can’t tell you,” says Townsend.

Charlize Theron is hoping to get active now protesting won’t get her deported from America.

The South African-born Oscar winner was kicked out of the U.S. when she was 19 after a film about Cuba she produced and financed was considered unpatriotic and damaging to America. And the incident made her realize she’d have to become a U.S. citizen before she could protest national politics, war or human rights violations on American soil.

Theron, who became an American citizen in 2007, says, “Protesting is different because you can be videotaped and then get arrested and, when you’ve been arrested, it’s harder to get citizenship. I produced and financed a documentary, called East of Havana, in Cuba that was considered unpatriotic here in America and I got deported when I was 19, so I didn’t want to push my luck.”

But now she’s a citizen, the Monster star insists she’ll be a lot more active when it comes to her pet causes: “I’ve always been very open about my politics. I waited until I got my American citizenship to protest. To say something that comes from a place of questioning government and questioning policies is considered unpatriotic, and that kind of means you don’t love the country and you should go back, is something that I don’t believe in. I’ve always been very much about causes and I don’t hide from that. This is my home now and I’m here to stay.”
