Charlize Theron opened up about her dad’s death to AIDS orphans

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron broke her vow never to discuss her late father’s death when she returned to her native South Africa in March and met with children orphaned by AIDS.

When she was just 15, the actress watched her mother shoot dead her abusive dad in self defense.

Theron, now 32, has always refused to discuss the incident - but opened up to the kids she encountered at a mobile Aids testing and counselling clinic she helped to fund in Kwazulu-Natal.

She explains, “These kids deal with death every day. Many of them do not have one or both parents, and I thought (talking about my father) was a way for me to say, ‘Whether you have one parent or zero parents, you can turn that negative into a positive.’”

And she explains she has turned the tragic experience into a positive lesson: “My father had a horrible disease. He was an alcoholic. I could have been one of those adults who go through life not taking responsibility and saying, ‘I didn’t have a (good) example (of a father).’ But actually, I had the best example. I had the example of what not to do. It was up to me to choose a life and to live that life.”

Charlize Theron got slapped by Will Smith

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron was shocked to get slapped by Will Smith on the set of new movie Hancock - as he was only supposed to pretend to hit her.

The pair star in the forthcoming superhero film and one scene required Smith to raise his hand to Theron and despite practicing a “fake slap”, the actor smacked her across the face for real.

And Theron insists it really did happen - despite denials from Smith.

She says, “He tried to fake slap me one time, but the fake one just didn’t happen. We’re still debating this one. I think he just hit me! But Will claims I leaned into his hand and that’s how it happened. I was so shocked! I was like, ‘He just slapped me!’
“But he said, ‘I did not slap you. I had my hand there and you turned into it.’ But Theron insists the incident didn’t sour their relationship, she adds, “We’re just like kids, it’s so much fun. He’s not a woman beater!”

Charlize Theron prefers to party with friends

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron snubs the Hollywood party circuit to spend time with her friends.

The Monster star is often inundated with invites to celebrity parties, but she prefers to be with her real friends.

She tells Britain’s GQ magazine, “I’d rather get drunk on red wine and talk with people I love. Friends come over and we cook, take long walks and hang out on the beach.”

Charlize Theron says marriage isn’t for her

Charlize Theron

Despite having been with Irish-actor boyfriend Stuart Townsend for seven years, Charlize Theron feels no seven-year itch to wander – or to get married, either.

“I think if you are in a one- or two-year relationship, love is enough. You can thrive on that,” the Monster Oscar winner, 32, tells Glamour for its July issue.

But, adds Theron, “when you hit years three and four, you realize that if you’re going to live with somebody … you have to be nurtured emotionally and spiritually, and you have to be intrigued. Because if that intrigue runs out, you’re not going to want to go home anymore.”

As for why Townsend is the special one for her, Theron says, “He’s got beautiful feet and hands.”

Only what if he should feel a seven-year itch? “I’ve always said that I worry about being with a man who doesn’t flirt,” she says. “I love that Stuart can watch tennis and tell me that he’s got a crush on a tennis player. We’re not meant to just like one person. But [that] doesn’t mean you go and build a life with another person.”

Echoing her previous sentiments, Theron, who costars with Will Smith in the upcoming Hancock, notes she is not ready for marriage. “Even when I was a little girl I never dreamed of the white dress and all of that,” she says.

“I want to be clear: I am not judgmental about [the institution of] marriage. I am judgmental about how our government doesn’t want to see the reality of gay and lesbian marriages.”

Charlize Theron in W Magazine.

0608-cover.jpg

Charlize Theron tells W magazine why she gets fed up with the notion that she plays predominately ‘ugly’ movie characters: “Oh, no, you better not be bringing up ‘ugly.’ Look, I get it. Monster was a transformation. North Country was dirt. That’s what happens when you go into a mine. In the Valley of Elah—that’s when I took real offense, because that was just my real hair color and me with no makeup.”

Following are other comments from Charlize Theron’s interview found in the June issue of W:

ON “GOOD MATERIAL” DRIVING HER TO CHOOSE MOVIE ROLES …

“More interesting stories come my way about what we consider real people than about glamorous, beautiful people. It really irks me that people think I choose these roles because if I’m not looking attractive, they will take me seriously. I’m sorry, but if I’m going to play a cop, I’m not going to be wearing eyeliner. I’m not going to wake up in a scene with lip gloss on, because that’s not how women wake up, not even the most beautiful women.”

ON WANTING CHILDREN BUT NOT MARRIAGE…

“I always knew that I didn’t want to get married. I’ve always known that I’d be a mom from the time I was a little girl.”

ON TURNING DOWN “HOT-CHICK” MOVIE PARTS AFTER HER LINGERIE-CLAD ROLE IN 2 DAYS IN THE VALLEY…

“A lot of people were saying, ‘You should just hit while the iron’s hot.’ But playing the same part over and over doesn’t leave you with any longevity. And I knew it was going to be harder for me, because of what I look like, to branch out to different kinds of roles.”

ON WHY SHE CHOSE TO CO-STAR WITH WILL SMITH IN HER NEW BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE, HANCOCK…

“[Will] said that there’s this idea within the industry where you do your independent film that’s made for under $2 million, it’s a struggle and then you win your Academy Award for that, because that’s your best work. And then you do what’s considered these kind of sellout roles in the big blockbusters. And he’s like, ‘Why can’t we do the best work in a big movie that can be a blockbuster?’”

ON HOW HER GREATEST TRANSFORMATION IS ON THE RED CARPET…

“It’s great fun when you have three people coming to your house, and one’s doing your nails, one’s doing your hair and one’s doing your makeup. Two hours later, you look gorgeous. But that’s not my life.”

ON HER SEVEN YEAR RELATIONSHIP WITH IRISH ACTOR, STUART TOWNSEND…

“Man, woman. Like to touch each other.”
