For those envious of Carrie Underwood’s svelte shape, the country singer — who got engaged to hockey player Mike Fisher Dec. 20 — says that it’s anything but effortless to maintain.

“Genetics are not exactly on my side,” Underwood, 26, said in a Jan. 2 radio interview for Ottawa, Ontario show Grecosize on the station Team 1200. “Once I got out of high school I packed on about 10 pounds, and once I was on American Idol I packed on another 10 pounds. I’m a little person, I’m 5-3, and I was about 130,” she estimates.

The star’s problem area: her tummy. “I carry all my stress weight, all my potato chip weight,” she told radio host Steve Warne, “Around my mid section. You’ve got to fight genetics sometimes.”

To fight that good fight while on tour, the Idol says, “I do not eat catering. I have a refrigerator on the bus and when we’re in a decent town that has a decent grocery store, I just go and stock up. My off days on the road are spent doing laundry and buying groceries.”

She even brings her own groceries when she goes home to Checotah, Okla. (“I have to…or I’ll starve,” she says. “Fitness is not a lifestyle [there].”

Her new personal trainer, Tony Greco, is “kicking my butt,” she says. “I need it. Especially with a tour coming up and a wedding to look good for.”

And about that wedding…Underwood says that she and Fisher have “no date” so far. “Our schedules don’t provide us too much time to get married and have time to really enjoy being married,” she explains. “We’re trying to really work it out and move some stuff around.

The Sunday night of their engagement was “a busy evening,” of phone calls to beat the news reports, she admits. She told Fisher, “‘Keep calling baby, keep calling!’ Because I didn’t want anyone to get offended or anything that we didn’t tell them first.”

Which other stars are attached to athletes?

Her hockey hubby-to-be, she says, has been a hands-on wedding planner, “He jumps in, and he always says he doesn’t. he’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t care. Just whatever you want!’…But then I go and ask him, ‘What do you think about this? and he’ll go ‘Oh, no,’ and he’ll weigh in. I think he’s going to be more involved than he initially thought he wanted to be, which is good. I need help.”

Will Mike and Carrie’s wedding be as incredible as these ’09 nuptials?

The logistics for couple (he’s stationed in Ottawa, she’s in Nashville and prepping for a new tour) “are going to be difficult,” Underwood admits. “But it seems like this past year when I have time off they have away games…We’re hoping the summer will be some nice time for us to spend consecutive days together.”

You win some, you lose some: a week and a half after Carrie Underwood accepted Mike Fisher’s proposal for marriage, the hockey star was turned down in his bid to play in the Olympics.

The Ottawa Citizen reports that Fisher, 29, was left off the Canadian Olympic team list unveiled on Wednesday.

A center for the Ottawa Senators, Fisher is “having a career year,” the paper notes, and many speculated he’d be selected to represent Canada in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver February 2010.

The overlooked athlete can console himself by making wedding plans with Underwood, 26. On Dec. 20, the singer said “yes!” and donned the engagement rock: a flawless yellow diamond engagement ring. The ultra-private Fisher told UsMagazine.com “The ring was designed by Johnathon Arndt. I did ask her parents for permission. No date set for wedding yet but this summer sometime.”

“We’ve gotten to know [Underwood] quite well over the last year and she’s a great girl,” Mike’s father Jim Fisher said recently. “We just think they make a great couple.”

Carrie Underwood says she got some great presents this year — among them, “a pair of pink warm fuzzy socks to keep my tootsies nice and toasty,” she writes on her fan club site.

Her best gift?

“I think you all know what Santa left under the tree for me this year…a fiance! Woo hoo!” writes the singer, 26, who announced last week that she and hockey player Mike Fisher are engaged.

She adds that her rat terrier, Little Ace, “is finally going to have a dad! We all couldn’t be happier!!!”

She says that the “mess of snow and ice” cut their holidays travel plans short, but they still “got to spend a little time in good ole’ Checotah,” she writes, referring to her Oklahoma hometown. “Not that I needed another day of all that food! I ate so much on Christmas Eve that I thought I might actually get sick! But it was sooooo goooood! Ace got lots of good stuff, too, from his poppy. Now I have to retrain him not to beg at the dinner table.”

Underwood and Fisher, 29, have yet to set a date, but he said they’re aiming to wed next summer.

Carrie Underwood certainly has a lot to smile about this holiday season.

The newly engaged 26 year-old country singer turned up at her fiancé Ottawa Senators hockey player Mike Fisher’s game last night flashing some major sparkle on her left hand.

A spokesperson from the Diamond Information Center estimates the brilliant round diamond comes in at whopping five-plus carats, with an estimated value of close to $150,000. Whew!

Underwood, who famously declared her affection for her beau in the liner notes of her recent album, Play On (“I love you so much!” she wrote. “You make my life better in every way! I thank God for you every day.”), accepted Fisher’s proposal on Sunday, following a year-long courtship.

Carrie Underwood and Ottawa Senator hockey player Mike Fisher are engaged.

According to the Ottawa Sun, he confirmed the news at a press conference Monday. He said he popped the question Sunday, but declined to offer any other details.

“It’s true,” he said. “We’re both obviously excited and very happy.”

His teammate Chris Neil said Fisher, 29, called him shortly after he proposed. “I think it’s great,” Neil told reporters. “It’s a long time coming. There’s going to be a lot of broken hearts in Ottawa with all those girls who are in love with Mikey.”

Underwood, 26, and Fisher have mostly been hush-hush about their relationship since they began dating last year.

But lately, they’ve been opening up.

Underwood gushed about the hockey player, 29, on the liner notes of her new CD, Play On.

“Thank you #12,” she wrote, referring to his jersey number. “You are the most amazing addition to my life! You are such a wonderful person and have had such an amazing hand in the building of this album and in the growth of me as a person. I love you so much! You make my life better in every way! I thank God for you every day… xoxo, Carrie.”
