LA Coroner Talks About Re-Opening Brittany Murphy’s “Accidental Death” Case

It’s been six years, but Brittany Murphy‘s unexpected death is still a mystery.

The actress’ “accidental death” at the young age of 32 has some renewed interest…so much so that there’s talk of re-opening the case.

The L.A. County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told E! News that he would be into taking a second glance at the initial findings of the case: her report states that she died of pneumonia, anemia, and an accidental mix of prescription and over-the-counter pills. That being said, if law enforcement got involved or some new evidence came to light, things could change.

Winter explained:

“We would have to have direct evidence. In all honesty, it would take something like a confession. Something connecting somebody with it.”

If only Simon Monjack were still around. Maybe things would be WAY different.

Back in 2013, a private lab (paid for by Murphy’s father, Angelo Bertolotti) tested hair samples that reportedly discovered an “abnormally high” level of at least 10 heavy metals, including barium (a substance found in rat poison) in the actor’s body. It led Angelo to believe that his daughter was poisoned by a “third-party perpetrator.”

Even with this new information, the coroner never looked into it again. Winter explained:

“[N]othing showed to the point of poison. [The levels] weren’t off the charts, and the levels weren’t consistent with poison. We could have reopened the case, but we didn’t think it warranted it.”

Forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht from the University of Pittsburgh still believes the coroner should reopen the investigation:

“I would have checked to see if the private lab results were valid and, if they could be corroborated and analyzed, whether there was exposure and where did the exposure come from,” says Wecht of the University of Pittsburgh. “You have two people—a husband and a wife—dying five months of each other. And, not engaging in any wild speculation, with two young people dying five months apart you’ve got to check it out, and I still don’t know what happened. It [the case] was dropped, and they should have investigated it.”

Do you think this puzzling case should be reopened?!

The Brittany Murphy Biopic Premieres September 6th On Lifetime

Lifetime is gearing up for their biopic based on the life of late actress Brittany Murphy. The movie will air on September 6th and will take fans from her childhood to adulthood and on through to her untimely passing in 2009.

Lifetime will debut “The Brittany Murphy Story,” a biopic based on the late actress’ life, on Sept. 6. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about the first feature-length film about Murphy, who died at age 32. Amanda Fuller (“Last Man Standing”) has been cast as Murphy and Sherilyn Fenn (“Ray Donovan”) will play her mother, Sharon Murphy, who was not consulted for this movie and has not been involved with production.

According to THR, the two-hour made-for-TV movie will show Murphy’s young life as a child actress, her tragic death and the immediate aftermath. Murphy died on Dec. 20, 2009, and though her cause of death was called into question, the coroner ruled she died from pneumonia and other causes. Her husband Simon Monjack died five months later of the same causes.

Will you be tuning in to see the Brittany Murphy movie? Were you a fan of hers? My favorite role of hers was Tai from “Clueless” — she took the role and made it her own. What’s your favorite Brittany Murphy movie?

Brittany Murphy’s last movie being released, 4 years out of her death.

brittany-murphy-something wicked

Brittany Murphy’s final movie is set to be released, four years after her death.

The actress’s final movie was an independent thriller titled ‘Something Wicked.’ It will be released in Eugene, Ore., on April 4th. Brittany died in 2009 at the age of 32, from pneumonia, anemia and multiple drug intoxication.

Five months after she died, her husband died from the same cause. BIZARRE!

Now, audiences can see Murphy in what producer Joe Colleran describes as a “psychological thriller about a young couple embarking on their honeymoon against their parents’ wishes. When the parents are tragically taken in an auto accident, gruesome secrets from the couple’s past come back to haunt them and ensure this couple does not live happily ever after.”

Murphy, says Colleran, “plays a psychiatrist who observes the couple’s deteriorating relationship and sets out to determine what sinister forces are driving the madness.”

After the movie opens in Eugene – where it was shot – it will expand to Portland and Seattle a week later. Producers eventually hope to roll the film out nationwide.

“I would describe Brittany’s performance as the most chilling performance of her career,” says Colleran.

Something Wicked also stars Shantel VanSanten (One Tree Hill), John Robinson (Lords of Dogtown), Julian Morris (Once Upon a Time), and James Patrick Stuart (Supernatural).

Not sure I have any interest in seeing this, you?

NEW REPORT: Brittany Murphy had RAT POISON in her stomach when she died.

Brittany Murphy’s father has announced a shocking claim, saying new toxicology results revealed his actress daughter may have been poisoned before her death.

The independent analysis was ordered by Brittany’s father Angelo Bertolotti, and found high levels of toxic metals, including Barium, which is used in rat poisons, in her hair.

Murphy, 32, died in December 2009 from acute pneumonia and severe anemia possibly complicated by therapeutic drugs, the Los Angeles County Coroner previously ruled.

Bertolotti fought for access to what he claimed was Murphy’s previously untested hair samples in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

He suggested in his court filing that chronic arsenic poisoning is sometimes misdiagnosed as anemia.

The case was permanently dismissed in May, court records show.

A coroner spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The testing of Murphy’s alleged hair, first reported by, showed safe levels of arsenic in the “8 Mile” star.

Still, Bertolotti said he wanted law enforcement to reopen the death investigation.

“The lab has shown that she was poisoned with criminal intent,” Bertolotti told the Daily News Monday.

“We would like the investigation opened again to discover who did it. So as not to jeopardize the new investigation, I can’t say who I suspect as of yet,” he said.

A source close to Murphy’s mom Sharon Murphy questioned where Bertolotti got the hair used in the private test.

The source said Sharon is the sole heir to Brittany’s estate and likely would have been notified if remains were handed over to Bertolotti.

The bizarre story of Brittany’s untimely passing gained added attention when her husband Simon Monjack died from pneumonia five months after she did at age 40.

It is awfully bizarre that both Brittany and her husband would BOTH die from pneumonia just five months apart. Isn’t it? Can you believe it’s been almost 4 years since she died?
