Although Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz announced yesterday that they had ended their romantic relationship, signs of the split had been evident for weeks.

During Monday’s kickoff of Timberlake’s 36-date FutureSex/LoveShow tour, the singer said midway through the show, “Sometimes love isn’t so easy,” giving the crowd a clue in to his personal life.

Meanwhile, Diaz went solo to Tuesday’s People’s Choice Awards, where she won the trophy for favorite leading lady.

The pair were last seen out together Dec. 16 in New York City celebrating Timberlake’s appearance on Saturday Night Live. The singer, 25, then flew home to Tennessee for the holidays while Diaz, 34, stayed in L.A. and then skied in Vail, Colo.

Diaz was also noticeably absent from the Jan. 3 premiere of Timberlake’s movie Alpha Dog. Instead, he brought his mom as his date – and was spotted engaging in cozy conversation with Scarlett Johansson, who recently filmed a video for one of Timberlake’s new songs, at a party afterwards.

“He called me around Christmas to say they had broken up,” a pal of Timberlake’s told PEOPLE. “They’re not talking to each other because things are a little awkward.”

A source close to the couple said part of the problem was: “I don’t think she’s so much into the scene like he is. He’s really young and he likes to go out. (He) hasn’t been into her for awhile.”

During his New York City visit with Diaz in December, Timberlake was spotted partying with two blonde models. At Christmas, he spent time in Memphis with ex-girlfriend Veronica Finn. (Finn, a Florida-based real estate agent, says he’s just “an old friend.”)

But don’t expect fireworks, says Timberlake’s pal. “They were laid-back together, so it’s not going to be an ugly breakup. This is just them realizing it was time to move on.”

And – in other news….Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake have CONFIRMED their breakup.  TMZ is reporting that they released a joint statement:

“It has always been our preference not to comment on the status of our relationship, but, out of respect for the time we’ve spent together, we feel compelled to do so now, in light of recent speculation and the number of inaccurate stories that are being reported by the media. We have, in fact, ended our romantic relationship and have done so mutually and as friends, with continued love and respect for one another.”

When Justin Timberlake, 25, was casting the femme fatale for his new $1 million video, “What Goes Around,” the singer – who was on the rocks with 34-year-old girlfriend Cameron Diaz — went after one actress: Scarlett Johansson. And Johansson readily agreed, an odd choice for the seasoned thespian who’s known for her careful film choices.

But not if you have a crush on the leading man, says a pal of Johansson.

“Scarlett has always liked Justin. They’ve always had a flirtation – that’s why Cameron was threatened by her.”

With good reason. The decision to cast the 20-year-old as the video vixen pushed Timberlake’s relationship with Diaz to the breaking point, and paved the way for Johansson to move in for the kill.

“She could not believe he went behind her back to put her in the video,” says a Timberlake pal. “Cameron was very jealous of Scarlett.”

Adds the source, “they definitely got together after she did the video.”

Indeed, sources in both stars’ inner circles tell Us the couple are in the beginning stages of a relationship and excited to get to know each other.

Actress Drew Barrymore may be on the cover of the latest Harper’s Bazaar gushing about her boyfriend of five years, Fabrizio Moretti, 26, but Us Weekly has learned that the 31-year-old actress has ended her relationship with the Strokes drummer.

“Drew said they needed time off,” a source close to the actress tells Us.

Confirms a Moretti pal, “Fab is now living back in his old apartment.”

The pair – who hooked up in April 2002 – seemed a good match on the surface, friends say.

“Drew has always had a taste for subculture,” Barrymore pal Courtney Love tells Us.

But they had suffered some rocky times. Tongues wagged when she skipped the February 2005 nuptials of Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas; months later, the duo got in a public tiff in Santa Monica, California.

In fact, “she broke up with him twice before this,” says a Barrymore insider.

At issue? Clashing personalities.

“He’s younger, and she’s more worldly,” says a source of Barrymore. “He doesn’t like the Hollywood stuff. He doesn’t get her friends.”

But don’t count them out just yet, adds the source. “This is exactly what happened last time they took a break.”

After all, Barrymore couldn’t say enough about her man in the interview with February’s Bazaar.

“Right now I’m in a phase of ‘I’m not even your girlfriend. I’m your best friend who is madly in love with you,’” she bubbled to the mag. “The longest I’ve ever been with someone was like two to three years, so I’m in uncharted waters. Right now I’m more into championing him as a human being than gushing love for him.”

Maybe the actress will take her own advice and revamp their love life. “You need to reinvent your relationship if you want to continue being together,” she opined in the article.

Dita Von Teese allegedly split from husband Marilyn Manson because she was sick of his constant partying and friendship with Lindsay Lohan. The burlesque dancer filed for divorce from the goth rocker last Friday citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.

Now it has been revealed that Dita, who moved out of the couple’s house before Christmas, decided to walk away from the marriage after growing tired of Manson’s late night parties and refusal to settle down and start a family.

A source close to Dita told The Sun newspaper: “She just had enough of his wild partying. Lindsay Lohan was ringing up the house wanting to come round and party with him. The phone would go all through the night, with people constantly turning up to hang out. Dita wants a quieter life and to have a baby. She told Manson to sort himself out or she was leaving. Unfortunately, nothing changed and he didn’t clean up his act.”

It has also been alleged that Manson – real name Brian Warner – had become paranoid from drug use during the pair’s marriage. The source added: “He became paranoid as a result of the drugs he was taking. At one stage he thought the cleaner was trying to kill him.”

The couple married in a gothic-style ceremony at an Irish castle in 2005. They have two cats, Lily and Aleister, and two dachshunds, Greta and Eva, together.

Justin Timberlake confirmed he’s split from girlfriend Cameron Diaz but tells The Toronto Star he “can’t talk about it.” Freelance reporter John Hiscock got that sweet little nugget out of JT at the premiere of Alpha Dog on Wednesday, January 3, to which Justin brought his mom as his date.

People reports that after the premiere Justin took off for L.A. hotspot Social Hollywood for an hour long “one on one” with freshly on the market Scarlett Johansson. The two are appearing together in Justin’s video for “What Goes Around.” We don’t want to say it was a date but… but we don’t know how else to finish that sentence. Flirt, Scarlett, flirt like the wind!

Just one year after shock rocker Marilyn Manson took burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese to be his gothly wedded bride, Dita wants out.

TMZ has obtained divorce papers filed by Von Teese, real name Heather Sweet, in Los Angeles Superior Court. In the documents, Von Teese cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for kicking the King of Goth Rock, real name Brian Warner, to the curb. According to Sweet, the couple called it quits on Christmas Eve. Goth humbug!

While the papers were filed on December 29, a source close to the couple tells Page Six that Manson has been in the dark on the split, because Von Teese can’t get in touch with the guy. “She tried to tell him she was divorcing him, but she can’t even get him on the phone.” Page Six also claims that Manson’s alcohol use may have oiled up the breakup.

Manson and Von Teese had a star-studded wedding ceremony in Ireland in December of 2005. Keanu Reeves, Lisa Maria Presley and Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne were among the guests.
