Mr. & Mrs. Smith: The TV Show?

mr_and_mrs_smith_1.jpg

Hit 2005 movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is to be turned into a TV series by US TV network ABC. The series will reunite director Doug Liman and writer Simon Kinberg, but there are no details as to who will take the starring roles. The action will pick up six months after events in the film, with the Smiths dealing with marital issues in a new house in a new suburb while trying to re-establish their careers. Kinberg says, “In a way, the show is all about the marriage. It is a show about any married couple trying to balance professional and home life.” US TV network CBS launched a version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 1996, featuring a similar plot, but it was scrapped after just two months.

Brad & Angelina Spend Christmas with Refugees

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have spent their year helping others, and they didn’t take a break on Christmas Day. The couple spent Monday handing out gifts to refugee children in the Costa Rican capital San Jose.

“We had a wonderful Christmas both with the Costa Rican people and the Colombian refugee families we met,” Jolie said in a statement. Her visit was part of her work as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

About 11,500 refugees have come to Costa Rica, most of them from Colombia, where an armed conflict between leftist guerrillas, soldiers and paramilitary forces has forced them to flee, says the UNHCR. All told, an estimated 3 million Colombians have been forced from their homes.

“The conflict in Colombia is the greatest humanitarian tragedy in the Western Hemisphere, but it receives very little international attention,” Jolie said after her arrival in San Jose. “My Christmas message to Colombian refugees and to the millions of displaced people in Colombia is that the world has not totally forgotten them.”

In San Jose, Jolie and Pitt dropped in on several small businesses established by refugees thanks to UNHCR economic initiatives. They also talked with young refugees, learning about the problems they and their families have faced.

“It’s been sad for me to hear so many negative stories that show confusion between refugees, who are the victims of the conflict, and some criminal elements,” Jolie said.

The UNHCR said this was Jolie’s second trip to the region in her five years as a goodwill ambassador. She also went to Ecuador in 2002 and later wrote a personal journal of her meetings with Colombian refugees there.

Holiday visits with the underprivileged has become something of a tradition for Pitt and Jolie. In 2005, they spent their first Thanksgiving together aiding earthquake victims in Pakistan.

That same holiday this year, before visiting Ho Chi Minh City, Jolie paid an unannounced visit to son Maddox’s birth country, Cambodia, where she pledged to aid conservation efforts.

Actress Angelina Jolie has hinted that she and partner Brad Pitt could be planning to give up their movie careers. Jolie, who has two adopted children, Maddox, five, and Zahara, 22 months, plus a biological baby with Pitt, six-month-old Shiloh, talked of her plans on US TV. The star, 31, said: ‘I’m hoping that as we get older, maybe we’ll do less films.’ Jolie, who recently filmed A Mighty Heart with Pitt in India, said she wants her children to have a normal upbringing. She added: ‘We don’t raise our kids in Hollywood. They don’t go to sets everyday. They travel the world and we do many, many other things.’ She also spoke of the six-year battle against ovarian cancer of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, 56. Jolie said: ‘She’s a remarkable woman. She’s very strong. Her spirit is unbroken.’

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie on the cover of People Mag.

In an exclusive interview in the new issue of PEOPLE, Angelina Jolie talks about her brood with Brad Pitt, which PEOPLE named “Family of the Year.”

Jolie, 31, says that she and Pitt, 43, have different parenting styles when it comes to Maddox, 5, Zahara, who turns 2 on Jan. 8, and Shiloh, 7 months: “I am the disciplinarian,” she says. “Brad can be, but if Z doesn’t get the bottle from me, she’ll very quickly run to Daddy.”

Asked which of the three kids rules the Jolie-Pitt roost, she says, “I bet if you asked Brad, he’d say Zahara. Mad is very smart, but he’s got a certain sense of calm. Zahara is possibly the funniest person I’ve ever met in my life. So dramatic and creative and loud and charming. She’s definitely the biggest personality in the house.”

As parents, what makes them most proud? “Somebody said to us recently that they were happy kids, and we talked about how much that meant to us to hear. And they’re good kids. God knows how we managed to do that – but they’re good kids.”

Jolie admits that their humanitarian and film work creates a somewhat nomadic existence for their family. “It’s hard, and maybe one day we’ll have to stay in one place,” she says. “I’m sure (the kids are) going to be 18 and say, ‘God, I just want to stay in one place.’ They’ll never want to leave home!”

But for now, they’re not slowing down. On Wednesday, after the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced plans to indict suspects for atrocities in Darfur, Jolie released a statement urging Americans to support the effort: “The Prosecutor is offering justice.”

And through the couple’s work with organizations such as the Cambodian Health Committee and Global Action for Children, they’re working to create in their children a sense of pride in their homelands: Cambodia for Maddox; Ethiopia for Zahara.

On a recent visit to Cambodia, where the couple are sponsoring a relief project in Maddox’s name, “He recognized himself in the people,” Jolie says of her son. “Which is a wonderful thing.”

For the first time, Angelina opens up about when and how she fell in love with Brad.

bradangie.jpg

Angelina Jolie is coming clean about how her relationship with Brad Pitt began on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith! In her first in-depth interview, the Good Shephard star tells Vogue she never meant to fall in love with Pitt — who was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time— it just happened!

“I didn’t know much about exactly where Brad was in his personal life [when they met on the set of Smith]. But it was clear he was with his best friend, someone he loves and respects,” Jolie reveals in Vogue magazine’s January issue. “And so we were both living, I suppose, very full lives.

“Brad was a huge surprise to me,” she said. “I, like most people, had a very distant impression of him from … the media.

“I think we were the last two people who were looking for a relationship. I certainly wasn’t,” she said. “I was quite content to be a single mom.”

Jolie says she and Pitt developed a friendship while shooting the film. “I think a few months in I realized, ‘God, I can’t wait to get to work,’” she said. “We just became kind of a pair.”

Jolie says that the time she spent getting to know Pitt before his split was “not as exciting as what a lot of people would like to believe. We spent a lot of time contemplating and thinking and talking about what we both wanted in life and realized that we wanted very, very similar things.

The two remained “very, very good friends” until Brad announced his separation from Jennifer Aniston. “And then life developed in a way where we could be together, where it felt like something we would do, we should do.”

In fact, it was her son, Madddox, now 5, who helped seal the deal. (Jolie and Pitt are also parents to Zahara, 23 months, and Shiloh, 6 months.) One day, Maddox “just out of the blue called him Dad,” says Jolie. “It was amazing. We were playing with cars on the floor of a hotel room, and we both heard it and didn’t say anything and just looked at each other. So that was probably the most defining moment, when he decided that we would all be a family.”

Jolie also dished “I did [once meet Aniston], but it was not a proper meeting. We’ve, like, passed each other and said ‘hi’ briefly, shook hands. But not a real sit-down-and-talk kind of meeting.” Asked if she would sit down and talk with Aniston, Jolie said, “That would be her decision, and I would welcome it.”

So, are Brad and Angie heading for the altar? “We both have been married before, so it’s not marriage that’s necessarily kept some people together. We are legally bound to our children, not to each other, and I think that’s the most important thing,” she said.

Angelina did admit she trusts no one, not even Brad! “I don’t think it’s a good thing. This is going to make you think that maybe I should get some therapy, but trust is such a bizarre word.”
