The mother of troubled British singer Amy Winehouse pleaded with her to get in touch so she can sort her daughter’s life out, in an open letter published Sunday.

Janis Winehouse, 52, said she wanted to make her daughter well again, in the letter printed in the News of the World newspaper.

Amy Winehouse, 24, who earned six Grammy nominations — the music industry’s most prestigious awards — Thursday, is rarely out of the tabloid headlines due to widely reported drug and alcohol problems and a turbulent private life.

“We want to help you, but we know that unless you want to be helped — unless you come to us — anything we tried would be in vain,” her mother wrote.

“We were terrified after we saw those pictures of you earlier this week, wandering the freezing streets of London at dawn in your underwear.

“Early fame has overwhelmed you, it’s dizzied you and muddled your mind. For a moment, forget you’re a superstar. You’re young and vulnerable, no stronger than any of the rest of us.

“I’d like nothing better than to have you home and help you put on a bit of weight with some wholesome home cooking.”

Winehouse scrapped her British tour recently after some shambolic performances, citing the separation from her husband Blake Fielder-Civil as the reason she could not go on.

Arrested after allegedly trying to bribe a pub barman he is accused of attacking, Fielder-Civil is in prison on remand.

“Having to cancel your tour, as well, has been very sad. But maybe it will make you stop, think and take stock of where your life is going,” the singer’s mother said.

“Blake, your husband, might not be my favourite person, you know that, but he’s your choice and I would never say anything about him to hurt you.

“When I was quoted recently as saying ‘Thank God Blake’s inside’, what I meant was that putting him in jail might help him clean up his act and change his life.

“I want you to love Blake for who he is, Amy. Not because you feel sorry for him, or because he can get you doped up.”

Troubled Amy Winehouse continued her erratic nocturnal antics for the fourth consecutive night, roaming around London’s Soho until 5am with a mystery white powder smeared across her nostrils.

The Rehab star, whose behavior has become increasingly troubling in recent times, played a secret gig at the Jazz After Dark club in Greek Street.

An onlooker said: “She seemed to be having trouble working out the music. She was going back and forth, sorting out the arrangements before singing for about 15 minutes.”

She then went to Balans restaurant in Old Compton Street, where she stayed until the early morning. Wearing the same clothes from a day earlier, she again stopped off at a local store for a quick sugar fix, but that’s were the sweetness ended – as she emerged, she spat at a waiting pack of photographers and fans.

A day earlier, a distraught Amy visited her husband Blake Fielder-Civil in London’s Pentonville Prison.

She spent just 30 minutes in the facility, and was in a flood of tears as she arrived home and was forced to crawl under the gate of her home after losing her keys.

“She was not on an all-night bender,” her U.K. rep tells PEOPLE of Winehouse’s appearance outside her flat at 5:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

Winehouse, 24, was sound asleep when she heard a noise outside. Having had friends over earlier in the evening, she wondered if one returned, according to the rep, who said: “She heard all these noises, and she went outside to look and there were all these photographers.”

The rep added, “She’d been sound asleep, and then there were all these photographers – of course she looked startled.”

British newspapers reported the singer – captured in photographs sans makeup and her trademark beehive – was “muttering incomprehensibly.”

Says her rep: “In light of recent reports, it’s easy to make assumptions, but she’s trying to get better and she needs the space to do that.”

After a rocky start to her U.K. tour, the singer on Nov. 27 canceled all appearances for the rest of the year.

Barefoot, and clad only in her bra and jeans, the troubled singer emerged from a friend’s house in Bow at 5.45am on Sunday looking distressed and agitated – as her mother-in-law says she taking more drugs than ever.

Onlookers said she appeared disorientated as she wandered around on the pavement for several minutes in the freezing cold before disappearing back inside.

The 24-year-old singer, who cancelled her UK tour last week, has ignored pleas from her family to seek help for her addiction to drugs.

They had hoped that she would return to the Causeway Clinic in Essex, where she has already had two failed attempts to get herself clean.

Instead, she has been ‘resting’ at a friend’s house in East London.

Why she came outside only half dressed in the early hours is unclear. One onlooker said she looked up and down the road as if she was waiting for someone, but no one arrived at the house.

“She came out of the house, walked down the drive and wandered around on the pavement for a bit.

“She looked upset and agitated but there was no obvious reason for her to have come outside. It was weird.”

Sure, she’s famous for a song in which she states she’s not going to “Rehab.” But Amy Wineshouse’s incarcerated husband Blake Fielder-Civil is asking her to reconsider.

Blake was arrested for assaulting a barman, and trying to pervert the justice system and he’s been in jail for over a week now. He’s had a chance to get the drugs out of his system, and is urging his wife to do the same.

His mom told press, “He’s already stopped taking drugs. He’s missing Amy desperately and he wants her to get help. He has told her she needs to go into rehab.”

Mommy Civil continued, “This is Amy’s opportunity to sort herself out too and I’ve strongly suggested to her that rehab would be a very good idea because this continual bad behavior has to stop. Just because she’s Amy Winehouse doesn’t mean I’m afraid to be angry with her. This is a woman with enormous talent and a lovely personality and she needs urgent help.”

Agressive Winehouse’s erratic behaviour has gone from bad to worse, pulling a series of VERY strange facial expressions, unable to hide her contempt at the awaiting media circus.

The increasingly troubled singer, who has previously admitted to a heroin addiction and once collapsed after a drugs overdose, has been provoking concern lately after a string of incidents have caused her career to spiral into crisis.

Once hailed as the most important female artist of her generation, Amy has made a mess of her UK tour so far, performing a shambolic gig in Birmingham last week, where she forgot her words, fell over and swore at the audience.

At a most recent gig, she arrived 40 minutes late on stage, rambled incoherently and disappeared off-stage repeatedly.

Miss Winehouse told the audience at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool that she dearly loved her husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

She said she had missed his prison phone call that night and added: “He would have loved to have been here. I spoke to him last night but I can only call either before or after EastEnders.”

Babyshambles frontman, Pete Doherty has spoken out in defence of Amy, insisting her husband’s absence is to blame for the star’s behaviour.

Doherty said: “I speak to Amy almost every day. She just wants her man back for Christmas. They are desperately in love.

“One good thing is that Blake has got clean since he has been in prison. It’s been quite an awakening.

“They are going to lose each other if it carries on. Love, music and melody is the way forward.”

And now Antonio Costa, head of the UN’s office on drugs and crime, has singled out the singer for ‘glamorising’ cocaine while warning of the dangers Britain faces from the drug.

Mr. Costa said: “Look at Kate Moss who still receives lucrative contracts after she was photographed sniffing [cocaine].”

He added: “Rock stars, like Amy Winehouse, become popular by singing ‘I ain’t going to rehab’ even though she badly needed, and eventually sought treatment.

“A sniff here and a sniff there in Europe are causing another disaster in Africa, to add to its poverty, its mass unemployment and its pandemics.”
