Alec Baldwin: Drug comments were a joke

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin was joking when he encouraged New York tourists to take drugs instead of riding horse carriages.

The actor appeared at a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) event on Wednesday to highlight cruelty to the animals involved in New York’s famous horse-drawn carriage trade.

Dismissing the notion that the tourist attraction is a tradition, Baldwin described other Manhattan traditions from his youth, including drug dealing in the city’s Union Square.

But PETA boss Michael McGraw insists the actor wasn’t urging visitors to break the law - he merely wanted to show how other New York traditions had died for the good.

McGraw says, “He was obviously joking.”

Baldwin told guests at the bash how he would help fund reforms to the horse-drawn carriage industry, if it meant the animals were better cared for.

He said, “I don’t have a problem with the carriage trade. If they remove all the cars in Manhattan, and build a farm with an acre of land for each horse to graze, I will invest my own money.”

“Passions run high in this issue… It’s loud and vulgar because they know they are wrong.”

Alec Baldwin to help end horse cruelty in New York

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin has offered to invest his own money to improve the conditions for horses which are used to carry tourists through New York’s Central Park.

The 30 Rock star hosted an event in Manhattan for animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Wednesday, at which a documentary exposing the horse-drawn carriage trade was screened.

The industry is under fire from local business leaders, politicians and animal rights advocates, who say that the frantic streets of New York are no place for nervous animals to haul around heavy carriages.

Baldwin insists he’s not seeking to ban the trade, and reveals he’s willing to write a cheque if city officials can ensure the money will improve conditions for the creatures.

He tells WENN, “I don’t have a problem with the carriage trade. If they remove all the cars in Manhattan, and build a farm with an acre of land for each horse to graze, I will invest my own money.”

“Passions run high in this issue… It’s loud and vulgar because they know they are wrong.”

Baldwin joins Chrissie Hynde and Pink who have both campaigned for PETA against horse-drawn carriages.

Alec Baldwin dishes the dirt in his new self-help book

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin dishes the dirt on his divorce in a new self-help book for single fathers.

Baldwin was banned by a “court order” from delving too deep into his split from Kim Basinger, which was made legal in 2002.

He explains in the opening pages of A Promise To Ourselves: Fatherhood, Divorce and Family Law, “What follows will disappoint those who hoped to find a gossipy, salacious tale of a showbusiness marriage gone bad.”

Instead he attacks the family court system, which has kept him apart from Ireland, his 12-year-old daughter with the actress.

He adds, “It is a system that is corrupt on his best day. It is like being tied to the back of a pickup truck and dragged down a gravel late at night. No one can hear your cries and complaints and it is not over until they say it’s over.”

Baldwin found time to take a swipe at Basinger at a bash on Friday, telling guests, “My ex-wife reaches an almost sexual level of satisfaction when she’s in a room full of high-priced lawyers.”

Alec Baldwin and daughter Ireland in Malibu.

Alec Baldwin is seen in Malibu with daughter Ireland who he famously abused in a telephone answering machine message in 2005. The couple seemed jovial as they were joined by friends on a sunny day in Malibu.

She’s the spitting image of her mom, Kim Basinger!

Alec Baldwin: “I’m too old for movie leading roles”

Alec Baldwin

Oscar nominee Alec Baldwin is talking nonsense! He says that he fears that he is already washed up at 49-years-old. He said the reason is that there are too many actors competing for too few roles. He added that he has turned his back on starring roles in the movie business to concentrate on 30 Rock, because he worries that he’s getting too old for the big screen.

He said, “The industry now is largely about young people. If you look at the number of films that star people over 40, there seem to be a lot less of them now. So the issue is competing to get good roles.

Dustin Hoffman said something great to me once: ‘We’re all in line. Some of us are just in a shorter line.’”

I’d still watch movies that starred Alec Baldwin, I think he’s a great actor.

Alec says he doesn’t care if he ever acted again. (Me either, we have something in common)

Alec Baldwin has hinted that he might end his career over the controversial abusive voicemail message he left to his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland. In a recording of the message, leaked to a celebrity website, Baldwin was heard calling his daughter a “rude, thoughtless pig.”

During an interview on American chat show The View, Baldwin, 46, said he has asked to be released from his contract for NBC program 30 Rock, because he doesn’t want the show to be negatively affected.

“If I never acted again I couldn’t care less,” he told the audience.

He also issued an emotional apology to Ireland: “Calling your child a pig or anything else is improper and inappropriate and I apologise to my daughter for that.

“There’s nothing wrong with being frustrated or angry about the situation…it’s the way you do it, and as people often do in this world, I took it out on the wrong person.”

When asked by host Barbara Walters whether he meant the message for his ex-wife Kim Basinger, he replied, “I think that goes without saying.”

Baldwin did not say whether he had spoken to his daughter since the drama began, but he insisted it was an isolated incident. “In my own case, with this message, I had never done this before in my life,” he said.

In an earlier statement, Basinger said: “It is Kim’s sincerest wish is for [Alec] to finally address his unstable and irrational behaviour so he, at some point can potentially create a relationship with his daughter.”

Baldwin’s actor brother, Billy has come the troubled star’s defence.

He has said: “What people don’t understand is that when a man goes through a divorce, there is a fear that your ex-wife is poisoning the well and pitting your own child against you. Alec’s attitude and tone reflects that concern.”
