Phil Harris, the fishing boat captain from television’s wildly popular reality series ‘The Deadliest Catch’ has died.

The deep-sea fisherman, 53, suffered a stroke on Jan. 29 while in an Alaskan port off-loading a catch. He was flown to Anchorage for surgery and showed signs of recovery through the days following, but ultimately succumbed to the trauma.

“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad – Captain Phil Harris,” his sons Jake and Josh Harris said in a statement posted on the Discovery Channel Web site. “Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down.”

The reality show, which has filmed five seasons, has been one of the Discovery Channel’s most popular. Harris was a central figure for this drama featuring the ageless tale of man taking on the elements. It depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska.

In a statement, Discovery Channel senior vice president Elizabeth Hillman says, “Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him.”

“We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart,” she said.

While we were shocked when Simon Cowell announced his ‘American Idol’ departure, we were not prepared for Howard Stern to throw his hat in the ring to be considered for Cowell’s old gig. At first, we thought Stern might be joking about his ‘Idol’ interest, but after bringing it up on his show two days in a row, it’s time to consider the pros and cons of a Stern/’Idol’ pairing. Entertainment Weekly Senior Writer and resident ‘Idol’ expert Michael Slezak likens Stern on ‘Idol’ to combining chocolate with cheeseburgers. “They’re two great tastes,” Slezak tells PopEater. “But I don’t necessarily know you’d want them together. They’re very popular, but I think there’s a reason McDonald’s has never offered a chocolate-dipped cheeseburger. I think Howard Stern and ‘American Idol’ are pretty much a chocolate cheeseburger.” Can America handle a chocolate, Stern/’Idol’ cheeseburger?

I’m so happy to be promoting Time Traveler’s Wife, because I absolutely LOVED the movie. I read the book, and I fell in love with the characters. I didn’t rush out to see the movie, because I was scared to! I didn’t want the movie to ruin the book for me (darn you My Sister’s Keeper). I waited until the movie was on it’s way out – and finally saw it. I was pleasantly surprised! I thought the movie did an awesome job of staying true to the book. Sure they left a bunch out – but the book was soooo long, there was no way to cover it all! I think the movie did the book justice, and that’s saying a lot.
