Alicia Vikander is on the September issue of Vanity Fair, talkin’ alllll about her costar and real-life lover Michael Fassbender. Even in the first paragraph of the cover story, the author makes it known that interview took place over Skype…because Vikander was visiting Fassbender in Australia! Ah, rich people love. You can read the full piece here, which is actually pretty interesting (she lived with Icona Pop!). Here are some highlights:
Her years spent in ballet: ââ¬ÅMy image of myself was not the best. Being in ballet school and being in leotards in front of a mirror I donââ¬â¢t know how many hours a day was quite tough.ââ¬Â
Living in a London flat with Icona Pop & Tove Lo. ââ¬ÅIt was the dirtiest bachelorette pad youââ¬â¢ve ever seen,ââ¬Â Vikander says. The four girls shared two beds and all their clothes, which they kept in a pile on the floor. She auditioned, unsuccessfully, for Snow White and the Huntsman and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She made 15 ââ¬Åself-tapesââ¬Â for various American television pilots and got completely ignored. ââ¬ÅI didnââ¬â¢t even get a ââ¬ËNo,ââ¬â¢ ââ¬Â she saysââ¬âher first taste of Hollywood.
A story from Fassbender: Vikander, Fassbender, and a handful of crew were going to actually live at the lighthouse for the next month during filming. Fassbender was reluctant, thinking, ââ¬ÅIs that necessary?ââ¬Â But Vikander didnââ¬â¢t question it. ââ¬ÅShe doesnââ¬â¢t take anything for granted,ââ¬Â says Fassbender. ââ¬ÅWith a lot of these actresses coming out, thereââ¬â¢s this bravery that you donââ¬â¢t see so much in male actors. . . . I noticed this as well with Lupita [Nyongââ¬â¢o] in 12 Years a Slaveââ¬âthis focus and understanding that thereââ¬â¢s an opportunity given to you and you grab it.ââ¬Â Vikanderââ¬â¢s determination to get Isabel right inspired Fassbender, an actor who hardly needs improvement, to up his game. ââ¬ÅShe doesnââ¬â¢t mind taking a character sheââ¬â¢s playing to an ugly place. Her level of commitment made me focus and make sure I was as committed.ââ¬Â
Vikander on working with Fassbender: ââ¬ÅHe was very sweet at letting me in. . . . He was like, ââ¬ËCan you please give me a note? What do you think I should do?ââ¬â¢ It was such a sweet thing to kind of let me in.ââ¬Â Even Fassbender, whoââ¬â¢s abjectly reluctant to speak about his personal relationships, admits, ââ¬ÅThese things of course sort of spill through to what youââ¬â¢re doing.ââ¬Â
I think Fassbenderââ¬â¢s comparison of Vikander to Lupita Nyongââ¬â¢o is particularly fascinating because there were rumors that the two also had an on-set romance. I guess bang Fassbender and his magic D will make you a star? Not that Lupita and Alicia both don’t deserve it- oh, they do. I just think it’s interesting- the incestuousness of Hollywood.
