Man, sh*t is hitting the fan for Woody Allen.
Ronan Farrow had ensured that there would be drama surrounding Woody Allenââ¬â¢s appearance at Cannes this year, and thatââ¬â¢s absolutely what went down. Ronanââ¬â¢s Hollywood Reporter op-ed was published mid-morning yesterday, and everyone was trying not to freak out in the middle of the high-profile festival. But of course, some cheeky reporter thought it would be funny to ask if Woody if he would ever consider writing a movie with an older woman-younger man love story, since all of his films seem to have very young women falling for much older men.
Mr. Allen said he was a romantic, raised on Hollywood movies. After so many films with love affairs between an older man and a younger woman, Mr. Allen was asked if he would ever consider making a film with a romance between, say, a 50-something woman and a 20-something man. That, he said, would be ââ¬Åa perfectly valid comic idea,ââ¬Â but it wasnââ¬â¢t really his field. ââ¬ÅI just donââ¬â¢t have any material,ââ¬Â he said. ââ¬ÅI donââ¬â¢t have anything really to draw on. But I wouldnââ¬â¢t hesitate if I had a good story.ââ¬Â
And then MC Laurent Lafitte made a ââ¬Årape jokeââ¬Â about Woody, which actually isn’t quite a rape “joke,” even though it’s being reported like that:
Laurent Lafitte, a French comedian and the master of ceremonies at the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival, on Wednesday night caused gasps with a comment about festival favorite Woody Allen before the premiere of Cafe Society.
While addressing Allen, the master of ceremonies said: ââ¬ÅYouââ¬â¢ve shot so many of your films here in Europe and yet in the U.S. you havenââ¬â¢t even been convicted of rape.ââ¬Â
Attendees took the comment as a reference to Roman Polanski, who lives and works in Europe, escaping the U.S.ââ¬â¢ bid for extradition from Poland for charges dating back to the 1970s related to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.
One thing’s for sure- MC has gigantic balls and whether you think it was warranted or not, it’s inevitable that this stuff be addressed.
