Bella Thorne is featured on the cover of the new issue of Seventeen magazine. Inside of this issue, she talked about being on food stamps when she was younger.
She was a mere nine-years-old when she lost her father Rey due to a motorcycle accident, but she said that she always kept her family’s money troubles private. Still, she said that the decision to do so wasn’t based off of embarrassment. She revealed to the magazine that the financial problems only made her more determined to succeed as a child star.
She told the publication, “I don’t think anybody really knew – it wasn’t a very obvious thing. I’ve never really talked about it. I wasn’t hiding it, and it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I’m embarrassed because we don’t have money.’ It was, ‘Oh, we don’t have money, so we’re going to work that much harder.’ It was scary, though, because you really want those jobs. It’s a different hunger when you want your family to eat.”
Bella also said that losing her father to a road accident still affects her and she has yet to get her driver’s license as a result. She added, “I’m not mature enough to accept the responsibility of perhaps taking someone else’s life.”
