Jessica Alba on business: 'I wanted to be treated like a guy'

Jessica Alba launched her billion dollar eco-friendly product line The Honest Company in 2012 and says that she had to approach Hollywood like a business and wanted to be treated like a man.

She told “Self” magazine, “For a long time, I didn’t think I was smart. I felt like an impostor. It’s not until you feel whole in yourself that you fit in anywhere. And it took me becoming a mom to actually feel that way.”

She went on to say, “I’ve always been business-minded. I approached Hollywood like a business. I was very calculated. I wanted to be treated like a guy; I wanted to put asses in seats. I saved my money, invested wisely and marketed myself. I’ve been building my own personal brand over time.”

Alba said that she has managed to have a good work and life balance, as well as a successful business. She said, “There’s something nice about me-time. My most productive thinking often happens during or after a workout.”

People reports:

Alba – who shared her morning fitness and beauty routine with SELF in a video (above) – admitted that exercising is not always easy. “I’m going to be straight with you guys, I don’t like working out,” she said in the clip. “But I feel really good after. It gives me energy. It just sets a good foundation for the day. Being strong helps me feel confident and beautiful.”

Having that good foundation also includes meditating – a tip she picked up from friend and wellness-guru Russell Simmons. “You can do a 3- or 5- or 15-minute meditation,” she said, “and just disconnect.”

And it also means “eat[ing] as fresh as possible,” which usually includes steel-cut oatmeal or a smoothie for breakfast and lunch from Real Food Daily, a eatery known for their salads and macrobiotic dishes. But that doesn’t mean that Alba doesn’t sometimes indulge in her “vice” during the day – popcorn with coconut oil, which she keeps stocked in her office.

Dinner might include lean meats, but not every night. “I’m trying to go more plant-based,” Alba said. Cutting down on meat has an impact on the environment, so if I can do my little part, I try.”

Kudos to her for creating a successful business and keeping a great work/life balance!
