“How To Get Away With Murder” star Viola Davis took home an Emmy Award at the 67th annual Emmys this weekend in a historic win in the outstanding lead actress in a drama series category. She was up against some pretty stiff competition, but emerged victorious.
When accepting the award, she said, “I see a line and over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. I can’t seem to get there now. I can’t seem to get over that line. But let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anything else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. Here’s to all the writers, awesome people.”
She went on to thank Halle Berry, Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington and Meagan Good. She added, “People that have redefined what it means to be a beautiful, sexy, leading woman…to be black.”
Congratulations to Viola Davis on her Emmy win!
