Ethan Hawke Disses The Oscars!

Woah, I love when people criticize American institutions like The Oscars…especially people who are FAMOUS!
Before Midnight star Ethan Hawke recently expressed his distaste for the way movies are evaluated in America, and called box office gross reports and movie award shows “asinine” and “destructive!” Says the actor:
“People want to turn everything in this country into a competition… [so] it’s clear who the winner is and who the loser is. It’s why they like to announce the grosses of movies, because it’s a way of saying, ‘This one is No. 1.’ It’s so asinine… if you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it’s really destructive.”
Well said, Ethan! I completely agree. So much money goes into these ceremonies which really don’t have a huge bearing on a film’s merit or quality. We’re glad Hawke has the guts to say something!

Sounds like sour grapes to me considering he was nominated twice but didn’t win.
I guess he has made enough money at this point that he can bite the hand that feeds him but it’s a serious amateur move that I though he was smart enough to avoid.
Award ceremonies are simply to honour people in a profession and most of them are deserving.
As far as bashing top grossing movies that also is funny since it’s the public voting with their wallets on what they want to see so he is really bashing the public.
Also sour grapes IMHO since he has only had two high grossing films (Dead Poets Society & Training Day) neither of which he was the star and that was over 12 years ago!
