I was looking for something new and fun to do in Portland and we decided to go check out Aries Spears at the Helium Comedy Club. We had a group of four and I think its the most fun we’ve had in a long time. The club itself is very nice located right on Hawthorne will lots of close and free parking. The interior has a modern speak easy feel very clean and a relaxing vibe. They have a cozy bar outside the theater with good drinks and quick service.
I like the design of the theater. The seats are in a semi-circle around the stage which ensures every seat in the house has a great view and you feel close enough to reach out and touch the performer. When I first looked at their lineup I was really impressed with the talent they book. Helium pulls in top acts like Doug Benson, Jim Bruer, Bob Saget, Christopher Titus and Hal Sparks. I love being able to see comedians that I have always loved in movies – in my own hometown! It also doesn’t hurt that the ticket prices are reasonable. With seats ranging from $15 to $35, they have prices to fit everyone’s pocketbook.
They had a two drink minimum, so we were wondering how crazy the prices would be. To our surprise our vodka tonics were not only great but under $5! We ordered some appetizers and dessert and our food tasted great and was served in under 15 minutes. One word of advice: if you order the Snickers pie be prepared to share – I have never seen a poor dessert attacked by so many forks at once but it was delicious.
We were excited to see Aries Spears, I always loved him on Mad TV. I have to say he was even better than I hoped. We spent the evening doubled over in laughter. He is a great stand up comedian. Aries used some of his most popular bits mixed in with newer material. He also included the audience by asking questions and including their responses in the act. I have to say it was an exceptional night from the club, drinks, food, to Aries who had our faces hurting from laughing. I can’t wait to check out another show at Helium!
